"I can't be with you, Connie. I-" Marion's voice broke as she looked away, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes.

Connie felt her heart sink as she took Marion's hands but the crying girl snatched them away, crossing her arms against her chest.

"…I'm sorry, but… But my parents found out. This is the last time I'll be seeing you."

Tears started to slide down Marion's face and Connie thought she was going to cry herself at the news. She always knew Marion's parents were homophobic, but she never thought they would find out.

There goes her plans of eloping with Marion and never telling the latter's family. Now they can't even see each other!

Connie wrapped her arms tight around Marion, not giving the girl a chance to escape even when she tensed and tried to pull away. "Please, just let me hold you one last time."

Marion soon relaxed in Connie's grip and let her tears fall freely, sobbing into the taller girl's shoulder.

Connie's grip loosened and she switched so one arm was around Marion's back and one cradled her head. Tears started to roll down Connie's cheeks too as she held the shorter girl.

Gwendolyn wasn't one to dwell on the past, she'd been taught to "stop being so negative" and forget whatever slights people had committed against her in the past. But this was more about what she did rather than what was done to her.

It had been two years since Gwen had reported her parents for abuse and been sent to a foster home. It had been two years since she tore apart her entire family.

No matter how many times she was told it wasn't her fault, that she wasn't wrong for getting herself out of a bad situation, that she did what she had to do to protect herself, she still couldn't accept it.

Every day when Gwen saw Milo she was tormented by the sight of her own bio brother looking at her with those big, scared eyes as she promised everything would be okay.

Gwendolyn had been floating around life without any clear purpose or path. She followed the rules, completed her work, excelled in school, and spent her free time drawing and skating.

But now she was sixteen and has to think about what she's going to do after high-school.

Would she go to college? Everyone says college is how you succeed in life, so she guesses she'll have to.

What job would she have? She isn't particularly interested in working, nor does she think she'd be very good, but you can't survive society without a 9-to-5.

She would probably enjoy a creative job, but those are a real hit-or-miss type of thing. She needs something secure, something she can trust.

Esme had just brushed her teeth and put on her pajamas to get ready for bed, but something kept nagging at her brain. So she got up, threw her shoes on, and sneakily made her way out of the dorms.

She just barely managed to sneak past the night shift guards and made her way through the large institute that was her school.

Once Esme was sure she was far enough away from the dorms, she sped her pace up and her steps grew slightly louder in the echoing halls but still quiet enough not to alert any potential guards who might still be lurking on school grounds.

Once she had made it to her destination—a plain door labeled “teacher's lounge”—she knocked three times. It took a minute but soon the door was thrown open and there stood principal Fletcher in all his middle-aged glory.

“What do you want? Why the hell aren't you in bed?”

“I'm sorry for sneaking out and disturbing you at this hour, sir, but I must tell you something.”

“Hurry it up! What do you want?”

“I'll need to come inside to discuss it with you privately. May I enter?”

The man grunted and reluctantly moved back, allowing the girl to enter.

Esme stepped inside the teacher's lounge and saw most of her floor's instructors seated inside. She made sure not to make direct eye contact with anyone as they would see it as a threat to their authority.

“Get on with it, girl. What do you want?”

“I was attending lunch with my classmates when I had discovered they were planning an escape this Thursday night when the guards switched rotations. I'm sorry I didn't tell you immediately, I was just so scared they would find out it was me and have my head on a spike for it.”

“I see.” Principal Fletcher's expression grew dark as he nodded once. “I'll have Ms. Agatha escort you back to bed, Esme. You shouldn't linger alone in these halls.”

Detention was worse than expected. Faye sat alone on the cold white tiles of the room, staring blankly at a depressing plain, white wall.

The girl was starting to go crazy in there with only the sink and toilet to keep her company. She didn't know how many days it had been nor how long she would be kept in there, but it was a nightmare.

Esme saved herself from the potential fallout of the escape knowing she would be hurt greatly if it failed. But at what cost?

The others were given lashes and sent to "detention" for several days—if they found out it was her fault, they would surely shun her for the rest of their lives.

Had it really been worth the risk?

No, I can't think like that, Esme thought. I had to save myself, I couldn't risk the punishment!

But… what if she hadn't told and they all escaped without fail? What if she had hope?

Esme rolled over in bed, a headache starting to form as she tightly squeezed her eyes shut.

Gwendolyn had long since been away from her parents, had long since been free of their clutches. But when she heard the banging on her door, she couldn't help but instinctively flinch.

They're here. They're mad.

A voice called out to her.

That's when Gwen came to her senses and realized she wasn't with her bio parents. She's not there anymore.

This is Ms. Deborah's home.

Richard was not a boy of change. He was upset when people cancelled at the last minute, he didn't like when his routine got screwed up, and he would worry himself sick before he tried something new.

Now he was not only going to switch schools, he was also going to be moving away from home into a building full of strangers. As you can imagine, he's NOT taking the news well.

Richard already argued with his parents, had an anxiety attack, and is now blasting music in an attempt to drown out his remaining anxiety.

Eventually, he became tired and he took his headphones off with exhausted arms and blinked his bleary eyes at the bright phone, quickly turning it off and soon falling asleep.

Today was the day.

It's time.

Richard has already packed his bags, taken a shower, eaten breakfast, and brushed his teeth. Now all that's left is waiting for the bus to pick him up as he paces on the front lawn.

The bus soon arrives and he sees a few kids already filling seats. Richard feels a new wave of nausea hit him as he boards the bus and makes his way to the very back.

Hopefully nobody else is sitting there and he'll have the back to himself so he can at least have a heart attack without anyone interfering.

Richard made it to the very back and it was nice and empty, just as expected. Once he was settled into his seat, the bus driver closed the doors and sped off to the next house.

The bus was full of moody, angsty teenagers by the time they reached the last house, and the only seat left was by Richard.

The last kid was a boy named Emmett—Richard knew because the kid had taken the last seat beside him and introduced himself.

As the biggest hater of people (as Richard proclaimed himself), he did not enjoy this stranger saddling up next to him and trying to be friendly.

Richard hates change.

Richard hates people.

“It was an accident, I swear!” That's what Faye claimed, at least.

But Emmett refused to believe Faye just happened to be passing by the former’s favorite flower when the latter set off her fire powers by accident. When had being tapped on the shoulder scared her before?

Emmett was this close to punching Faye right in the face even with all the onlookers, but stopped when he saw their instructor marching over. Faye’s friends shuffled away from the two at the sight of the furious teacher.

“What is this all about?! I've told you about using your powers without permission!”

“Forgive me, Ms. Agatha!” Faye pleaded. “I was startled when Emmett approached me from behind!”

“And that gives you the excuse to start burning my classroom? DETENTION!”

The whole room froze at that single word, even the boys sitting in the farthest corner of the room.

Emmett suddenly felt bad for making a big deal of the flower... Even he wouldn't wish “detention” on his worst enemy.
