Hi! I'm Fract (they/them), I'm a 22-y-o Bleach fan. I struggle getting stuff done in general so updates (on anything, really) may not be regular and if I go missing for months it's probably normal, I just have periods like that. That aside, I make art and write, although right now I'm working on a series and it's taking ages so don't expect chapters for that to come out any time soon. I may occasionally post shorter pieces of writing though, or discuss my worldbuilding and stuff like that. I reblog whatever I like, but have a couple of tags that have my name in them, so you can follow just those instead of following my blog if they interest you.

There's a fascinating phenomenon that isn't unique to tumblr, but which I have certainly seen here a lot, which I'm going to call the Default Assumption of Incompetence. It's when somebody has the baffling habit of always starting from the assumption that other people do not know anything about anything, or at least that having more knowledge than the assumer is extremely rare and statistically unlikely. To do this, they will frequently go out of their way to ignore context clues that indicate otherwise, or in some cases the assumer simply doesn't know enough about the subject at hand to be able to estimate whether or not this person knows what they are doing.
The assumer will see a social media post about someone's mushroom harvest, which clearly only contains exactly two distinct kinds of mushrooms, which the poster has identified and correctly named in the post itself, and the assumer will feel compelled to warn the forager to be careful out there! Some mushrooms are poisonous and they should be very careful to only pick ones they can identify! The assumer, who has ignored the fact that the poster did identify both of the mushroom species they had picked, and can most likely be trusted to do so in the future as well, has naturally assumed that the person showing off the results of their latest mushroom haul must have been obliviously picking them at random like an unsupervised toddler who is lucky to be alive.
If someone makes a post talking about how they just got a new job as a bus driver, the assumer might swoop in to warn them that driving a bus is extremely dangerous! It's so dangerous that it's literally illegal to do that unless you have a specific special training for doing that! Even a normal driver's license isn't good enough, you need a special license for it! And when the person who just got hired as a bus driver verifies that yes, they know that, they do have the license to drive a bus, and that they wouldn't have even hired someone who doesn't. The first question of the job interview was about making sure that they have a valid license for driving this type of vehicle.
"Well how was I supposed to know that?" is the assumer's standard answer to being corrected. Not embarrassed or apologetic, only defensive and insulted, as if the other person here is the one being unreasonably rude for implying that it was stupid of the assumer to assume that someone who just got a job driving a bus might not know how to drive a bus.
This kind of thing isn't necessarily about being arrogant and assuming that everyone else is stupid. It's about not assuming that everyone is smart and knowledgeable.
You see this a lot in tech support. Everybody hates those basic questions like "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" It feels ridiculous and condescending both to the person being asked and the person asking, and you honestly just want to skip it because surely nobody would bother calling tech support waiting without checking something so basic?
...and then you get that call. The one where you spend twenty minutes troubleshooting only to figure out that not only haven't they tried turning it on and off again, the device isn't even plugged in. After that, you always ask.
Somebody posts about picking mushrooms. Did they correctly identify the species? Or did they just get very, very lucky? Emergency rooms (and funeral homes) have seen a lot of people come through who were very confident in their mushroom identification skills.
I'm sure your bus driver example was intended to be an exaggerated strawman, because obviously nobody would hire someone to drive a bus without making sure they're qualified, right? You can totally just assume that from context clues.
Encounter this kind of thing enough times, and you stop assuming that people know what they're doing. Instead of getting offended that some stranger didn't automatically know how skilled you are, maybe take a moment to appreciate that they were looking out for you -- even if it wasn't necessary.
That's a valid point, but even coming from that perspective, I think it's still not a reasonable response. Someone stupid enough to go randomly picking mushrooms they don't know, has no idea that driving a bus requires a special training you can't just intuitively guess, or thinks they can just DIY electric installment stuff without at least checking beforehand whether they can do that, should simply die as the consequence of their actions.
So, tech support is very explicitly different in a very key way: they have asked for help.
The fact that someone, somewhere, has found a way to do things that make literally no sense, is not an argument for treating everybody like they're about to make the stupidest possible decision at all times.
The examples given were also very specifically about the explainers very clearly knowing less than the person they're talking to/at.
Not being able to discuss literally anything without being talked down to, leading to feeling the need to include giant paragraphs of asides that will get get ignored and/or picked apart, is *not fun*.
Sharing an experience in a social space is not a request for basic guidance on a topic you have in no way demonstrated any need for.
I think most people understand that if they responded that way irl chatting with someone they are vaguely friendly with, it would not go down well.
Now, I'm not usually one to encourage...tact. Like borderline lying about why you're saying something, but...In this case...
Like. Let's grab the mushroom example. If you're particularly concerned about that case in particular (obviously don't do this to everyone all the time that's an utter pain), you have a bunch of options that AREN'T implying the person is ignorant. Like so:
"OP knows what they're doing, but psa, for anyone else going mushroom hunting: make sure you can correctly identify mushrooms!! Eatable and poisonous mushrooms can look very alike"
Or better yet:
"Gosh, identifying mushrooms is so hard. I'd have to check twice before eating those, I often mix up with [name of other mushroom]."
Like. If in one case you ABSOLUTELY have to point something out. You can say it more politely, in a way that would make anyone unsure of themselves double check that they did the thing properly, but that anyone confident will just gloss over. Warn that it's a general mistake people make, or a mistake you would make, instead of implying you're worried OP specifically is not qualified to identify mushrooms properly - it's less personal and sounds like less of an attack.
(Although, I do absolutely agree with prev; if you weren't asked for help, it's better not to say anything. I swear I need more people to understand that, I know several people IRL who will criticize any artwork I show them and then argue that "well how can people improve if you don't tell them this stuff" when you point it out, even though you've explained three times over in the past year that you're showing them a work that's already finished, that you did not ask for help, and that IF THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE ISSUE THEY ARE POINTING OUT THEN WHAT IS THE POINT. I ALSO SEE THAT THE ARMS ARE TOO LONG JFC WE BOTH HAVE GOOD VISION.)
(Anyway, so yeah, I agree. But also, if you absolutely do feel like you need to make a remark, you -can- in fact have more tact than implying you are leads more competent than the person when they aren't visibly doing anything wrong)

People who cannot find beauty in every biome on earth are incredibly bizarre to me. "yeah this place is really beautiful but this place isnt :/". what the fuck are you talking about. start admiring that rock and that tree and that bug and that scrubby little plant and that weird animal and that extreme weather right now. im not telling you to go live there but please you gotta start enjoying all kinds of nature im begging you.
One thing that's made me both a lot happier and a better artist was to realize that you can find anything beautiful. That beauty really isn't innate - which I already knew, but I thought it was a lot more linked to taste than it actually was.
You can learn to love anything - you just have to look at it the right way. For that, sometimes you need a memory - but a lot of the time, you just need to be observant, or have someone point out to you what is beautiful.
The world is a lot more beautiful when you learn to see the beauty in it, seriously. I highly recommend it
Hello everyone, I am Nina a transgender, am a member of lgbtiq refugees in the camp ,over 50 lgbtiq refugees in my community are passing through hard life ,we are stack in the community, our survival is miserable, we don't have basic necessities in our community, the issue of getting food is hard foe us in the community because we don't work in the camp ,we were lucky we got a friend who helped us open a fundraiser for us ,we are now surviving through it ,we are focused mostly on buying food ,medical care when needed and also clean water for drinking from shops ,the issue of water ,we have it at the boreholes but we can't drink it because it is too salty ,so we also have to buy water clean and safe for drinking
Our friends and donors, please we take this opportunity to thank everyone donating and those willing to donate contributing to our survival in the refugee camp
So far we aren't receiving donations, we are low on basic necessities especially food and medical services, shelters are also needed to setup ,the tents we are living are not strong and are the damaged with rain and too much sunshine in the refugee camp
Though we are discriminated here in the refugee camp ,I know there are people out there who cares ,that's the only hope we remain with ,support us in all means you can please
NB:The process is abit slow for lgbtiq refugees in the camp ,UNHCR is working hard to resettle one by one to safe third countries like Canada which is the only country for resettlements for now, most of our friends have been resettled there and others are on flights waiting to go ,I know we shall all soon be resettled there in safe countries when our right time comes ,only one should be patient because the process is abit slow ,so for that reason we humbly request anyone who is able to help or share ,Please donate or share if you are able to do so

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
