The words don’t really register to you until you’re already home.

They follow you in, clinging to you like they’ve sunk their claws in. Everything feels slightly unreal around you—the door closing behind you, the layout of the apartment, the sound of something playing faintly in the background where Levi had been waiting, unaware that anything had changed.

We’re shutting down.

You drop your bag a little too carelessly by the door. “Levi—” Your voice cracks before you can even finish his name.

Levi stands immediately. His attention snaps to you, eyes wandering over your form to take in your drawn-in shoulders, your slightly trembling hands, the first drops of tears glistening in your eyes.

“What happened?” he asks.

You open your mouth. Nothing comes out. You feel a lump in your throat, the words catching somewhere between your chest and your lips, and suddenly it’s all too much at once, the reality of it crashing in without warning, leaving you standing there, helpless and overwhelmed.

“They’re closing,” you manage finally, the sentence breaking apart as it leaves you. “My job—they’re just—closing.”

After a handful of seconds of silence, Levi sighs and says, “Oh, baby, come here.” His voice softens the way it does only for you. Before you can think, he’s already pulling you into him with firm arms that wrap around you. 

You lean into it involuntarily, as if you’ve been waiting for it. Your face buries into his shoulder, breath hitching as the tears start rolling down your cheeks uncontrollably. Your fingers grip onto his shirt, giving you something to just hold onto while the rest of the world feels like it’s slipping away.

“I didn’t even—” you start, voice breaking again. “I didn’t even see it coming—”

“I know,” he says, one hand coming up to cradle the back of your head, keeping you close and steady while your breath falters. “I know.”

You shake your head against him, frustration and fear twisting deep in your gut until it feels impossible to separate them. “What am I going to do?”

Levi doesn’t hesitate. “You’re going to take a breath,” he says first, giving you something solid to stand on. You listen and take a deep breath. “And then you’re going to remember that this isn’t the end of anything.”

You pull back just enough to look at him, your vision blurred, searching his face for something to hold onto. He meets your gaze without wavering.

“I make enough for both of us,” he continues. “We’re going to be fine. You’re going to be fine.” Your lips part slightly, his words sinking in through the haze. “There’s no rush.” His thumb brushes gently beneath your eye, catching a tear before it falls. “You’ll find something else.”

You sniff softly, your grip on him loosening just a little. “I just—” you start, then stop, shaking your head.

He leans in, pressing a brief kiss to your forehead, then another to your temple. “I’ve got you,” he whispers.

He doesn’t let you go right away. Instead, he guides you gently toward the couch, sitting you down before pulling out his phone, tapping away with his eyes narrowed and brows furrowed. 

“What are you doing?” you ask.

“Ordering food.”

“Levi—”

“Your favorite,” he adds, not looking up. “And chocolate.”

Despite everything, a small, shaky laugh slips out of you. You don’t know how you got so lucky to meet a man like him. He sets the phone aside once he’s done, his attention returning to you immediately. Nothing else matters more in this moment to him. Your eyes are still wet. Your breathing is still uneven. But it’s at least somewhat better. 

He leans in again, pressing a soft kiss to your lips. Then another, and another, one after the other. You know what he’s doing. He’s giving you something else to focus on. You melt into it without thinking, hands lifting to rest against his face. He doesn’t rush you and doesn’t pull away until you do.

When you finally pull back, his forehead rests lightly against yours. “We’re going to be fine,” he says softly.

This time, you believe him.
