NEVER put your car in neutral going downhill
If you’re coasting (traveling forward with your foot off the accelerator pedal) the engine will brake (not break) itself, especially if you shift to a lower gear. This helps to slow you down. In addition, if something goes wrong, you want to be able to move without having to shift back into drive
NEVER pump/feather the brakes if you have ABS
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is designed to pump the brakes for you (up to 15 times per second, much faster than a human) to prevent your wheels from locking up and keep your car from sliding. ABS only works when the pedal is pressed, and tapping the pedal can damage the system

Some other things to keep in mind:
Your wheels impart a lot of energy to the road. Spinning your wheels on ice will melt the ice, which can cause you to hydroplane. Drive slowly and carefully and don’t jam on the accelerator (or the brake, except in an emergency)
Don’t let anyone bully you on the road. Drive as fast as you feel safe driving. If you don’t feel safe driving at all, don’t. It’s not worth your life
The image in the OP is your defogger, not a defroster. It’s designed to defog your front and side windows. To use it, push the button or turn the knob or what have you, and turn both the fan speed and temperature to maximum. It’s not designed to melt ice; buy an ice scraper. Do not drive unless all your windows are clear of ice and fog
This is your rear window defroster. You can tell the difference because it’s rectangular. It activates filaments stuck to your rear window to melt ice and clear fog. It’s usually on a 10-15 minute timer and will shut off automatically
Flip up your windshield wipers if you expect snow. This will keep them from freezing to your windshield, which can cause the blades to crack and tear. Don’t use your windshield wipers to clear ice; this will tear the blades. Buy an ice scraper
Always tail-in park. It will be much easier to get out if you get stuck
And for the love of G-d, don’t pour hot water on your windshield. You will break it, and those things aren’t cheap
