Marsha P. "Pay It No Mind" Johnson, born August 24, 1945.
On the evening of August 22, we were 100 strong outside Barclays Center in Brooklyn demanding trans inclusion and calling bullshit on the far-right campaign against WNBA before the NY Liberty-Indiana Fever game. The bigots' rally was half the size but swarmed by media.
Enormous support from New York Liberty fans, many of whom came wearing pro-trans shirts, carrying signs and flags. It was obvious that MAGA astroturfed tickets for their supporters. You never saw so many older white cis dudes wearing Indiana Fever Sophie Cunningham jerseys.
Oh, the Liberty won, of course.

Washington can threaten larger Chinese corporations and banks, but the stakes rise sharply when it moves from small independent refineries to the major banks of the worldâs second-largest economy. Trying to cut those banks out of dollar finance could bring retaliation and disrupt trade and banking far beyond Iran. U.S. corporations themselves are deeply tied to business with China.
That is the contradiction Bessent cannot threaten away. Measures powerful enough to seriously damage China could also impose heavy costs on the U.S. and the world capitalist economy.

August 21, 1940: Death of Comrade L.D. Trotsky, founder of the Soviet Red Army and co-leader of the Great October Socialist Revolution.
From Trotskyâs âTestamentâ: For forty-three years of my conscious life I have remained a revolutionist; for forty-two of them I have fought under the banner of Marxism. Â If I had to begin all over again I would of course try to avoid this or that mistake, but the main course of my life would remain unchanged. Â I shall die a proletarian revolutionist, a Marxist, a dialectical materialist, and, consequently, an irreconcilable atheist. Â My faith in the communist future of mankind is not less ardent, indeed it is firmer today, than it was in the days of my youth.
Natasha has just come up to the window from the courtyard and opened it wider so that the air may enter more freely into my room. Â I can see the bright green strip of grass beneath the wall, and the clear blue sky above the wall, and sunlight everywhere. Â Life is beautiful. Â Let the future generations cleanse it of all evil, oppression and violence, and enjoy it to the full.
Aug 21, 1831, was the start of the rebellion led by Nat Turner. It was the largest revolt by enslaved Africans in U.S. history.
Turner and the other participants took action, they did not wait on legislation, policy or elections to challenge their oppressors.

The art of revolutionary politics is knowing what to do next. It is okay to theorize about fascism or the strength of the right wing. But our organization differs from a debating society. We must take a firm, indeed revolutionary, stance.
Individuals can change, but the ruling classâs trend is toward repression, solidifying in the most undemocratic way possible its control over the resources of the country and indeed of the globe. U.S. imperialism is on the march everywhere. The devastating results fall on the backs of the workers at home as well.
What do we do? We know the right wing is moving, and that there is only a thin difference between the right and the ultra-right.
One of the great lessons of the 1930s was Leon Trotskyâs writings on the question of how to fight fascism. He stressed how important it is not to overlook what is happening, how it is possible to lose the historic moment and allow the ruling class to be victorious.
He delineated in a dramatic and readable way the steps that led to the victory of fascism in Germany.
In the U.S. at that time there were only the beginnings of fascist groupings. No sooner did the wave of reaction sweeping Europe reach these shores than the great sit-down strikes among the workers wiped them out completely.
They were never able to get a foothold among the workers. The myriad of small fascist groups were washed away by the upsurge of the working class.
That is the surest way to end any fascist attempt to establish itself as a political force over the working class.
Thereâs been no experience here with fascism on a mass scale. So we are basically looking at a theoretical and ideological discussion.
Our task is not to wait until things happen, in which case you can be absolutely sure the liberal bourgeoisie as well as certain sections of the big bourgeoisie will get into it. Right now, the working class is either indifferent or apathetic in this great struggle.
The possibility for the growth of neofascism, if you can call it that, and for political reaction generally is in the soil because monopoly is growing. The contradiction between the forms of capitalist production and the forms of capitalist distribution grows wider and wider.

August 21, 1971: Assassination of Comrade George Jackson, revolutionary communist and Black Panther Party prison leader.
He said in his book âSoledad Brotherâ: âI met Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Engels and Mao ⌠and they redeemed me. For the first four years, I studied nothing but economics and military ideas."
He joined the Black Panther Party from his jail cell and wrote about the difference between reform and revolution in his last book, "Blood in My Eyeâ:
âReshuffle the government personnel and forms, without changing property relations and economic institutions, and you have produced simply another reform stage in the old bourgeois revolution. The power to alter the present imbalances ⌠rests with control over production and distribution of wealthâŚ.
"Revolutionary change means the seizure of all that is held by the 1 percent, and the transference of these holdings into the hands of the remaining 99 percent. If the 1 percent are simply displaced by another 1 percent, revolutionary change has not taken place.â

The Cuban Revolution is a beautiful revolution â and even more so now, when it is being relentlessly attacked. Not because photography embellished it, nor because a frame could fabricate history, but because it has lived through â and continues to live through â a real-life epic that, from the very beginning, found those who knew how to translate it into images.
Korda, RaĂşl Corrales, Osvaldo and Roberto Salas, Liborio Noval, Perfecto Romero, Ernesto FernĂĄndez, and other great photographers recognized in that political transformation an extraordinary visual subject: bearded young men arriving from the mountains, crowds in the streets, literacy teachers, peasants, workers, militiamen; a country that seemed to throw itself wholeheartedly into its own narrative.

Havana, Aug. 18, 2026: For over six decades, the United States has attempted to make the Cuban people pay the consequences of their sovereign decision to follow a socialist and independent path. However, over the course of this most recent period, Washingtonâs strategy of coercion has undergone a decisive mutation. The latest phase of this prolonged economic war has intentionally targeted the islandâs most vulnerable and vital artery for daily life: its energy supply.
