Several years ago I saw this post on here that was originally the OP talking about Simon and Garfunkel and said “it’s so funny how Simon is like the name of a normal dude and Garfunkel is like the name of a little goblin man” and it became really good commentary on antisemitism and the fact that these two Jewish men, in this context, represent the erasure of assimilation versus the dehumanization of stereotypes. I can’t find that post but I think about it a lot.

My pie in the sky goal for learning Chinese is to read a classic poem in the original language and actually understand why it is beautiful. My croissant high above sea level goal is to read a paragraph of the trashiest pulp their literary tradition can offer me and actually understand why it’s stupid as hell (complimentary).

I keep reading English translations of classic Chinese poetry where the poems are introduced by a tremendously sincere translator saying something like, “the exquisite verse of [Poet] has endured through centuries for reasons self-evident to any who read it,” and then I’ll read it and unfortunately. the reasons are rarely self-evident.

Its because the narrative fails if the viewer doesn't share the view of being from a powerful country instead of-- *a cia agent shoots me before i can finish it, i am found dead in my room, my mom screams, this destroys my family. The case is revealed leading to a horrible two months where brazil and the us are in a cold war kind of state but brazil settles and apologizes to the us because it knows the usa can kill them all. Two years later the us makes a movie about how the man who murdered me for a tumblr post was REALLY sad about it but he has to live with killing innocent people because thats how poweful countries work and whoever says you shouldn't kill people for othwr countries is wrong. He is like prometheus. He decides that safest hands are our own. It wins an Oscar. I do not show up in the movie in case someone might humanize a non usamerican victim by mistake. My mom is mentioned, but her scene is cut for time. They bring up the possibility that i was a communist and a really old tumblr post to make people question my morality. There are 7 celebrity cameos. Both joe biden and donald trump show up as characters in the movie as well as neymar and lionel messi, who was in the united states at the time, and could possibly have heard about it*
