some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"

everything you see on tumblr is biased towards the perspectives of the types of people who post a lot on tumblr. this is essential to remember
it's very frustrating seeing otherwise well-structured posts about media literacy and critical thinking bookended with statements about "nowadays", "nobody has literacy anymore", "this generation is so anti-intellectual", and the like, unquestioningly falling into better past fallacies.
Do we really think the 80s and its Satanic Panic were better at critical thinking? what about the 40s? the Victorian era? societies have always had problems with critical thinking and literacy, because most societies have dealt with propaganda, corrupt leadership, difficulty providing education (due to poverty or discrimination or other issues), and/or people who resist critical thinking (due to privilege or circumstance or what have you). we can criticize media trends without pulling a "well back in the GOOD OLD DAYS" about it.

The purpose of Wizard Garb is a sort of combined aposematism and MĆ¼llerian mimicry with respect to other magical critters. Spell selection varies wildly, so not every wizard is an immediate threat, but how keen would you be to snack on something when there's a one in twenty chance it knows how to shoot lightning out of its ass?

I can't remember who said it but I saw a comment or tweet talking about hypocrisy that essentially said The Hypocrisy Is The Point. hypocrisy is power. it's the ability to set rules for everyone else except you. and if power is a virtue then hypocrisy is a virtue. it's why you never really get anywhere with "by your logic..." or "then wouldn't that mean...". it's not that they don't realize they're being hypocritical. they do it on purpose to prove that you have to listen to them and they don't have to listen to you
i hate when apps know that iām screenshotting something. when i screenshot something, thatās me acting outside your realm of understanding, app. i am beyond what you consider the observable universe. youāre not supposed to perceive me. we donāt know when god screenshots the earth. we donāt know when heās like, āokay iām just gonna take a pic in case i ever want to add dinosaurs back to something later and donāt remember how.ā and if we did, we wouldnāt act all smug about it like, āhey, you wanna share that post? you could just click here to share it.ā no, man. you didnāt catch me. i screenshotted this for my own reasons. whatās next? i canāt take a photo of my computer screen with my phone out of laziness without being shamed by the printer i donāt own?
