thinking about how ilya in ottawa without shane physically there has to relearn how to be a person who isn't performing for someone (or even maybe for the first time....). like yeah there's the general i'm fine act for the centaurs, but besides that... in boston, even at his worst, he had an audience he cared about impressing. in ottawa post-trade he's just. a guy. alone in a house with stuff still in boxes so he doesn't have to acknowledge that he's here for good yet, a house that isn't decorated yet.
and i think that's so much worse than anyone clocks. because a guy that depressed NEEDS a witness, needs someone keeping score, and there's nobody keeping score anymore except him, and he is a terrible judge
Okay so I have had the same moderate depression going on for over 5 years and yes the audience and not just the audience but spoon theory and responsibility.
When you have depression and many neurodivergencies a number of spoons go into masking. Basically effort is put in to have a particular appearance in daily life, and this requires effort that cannot be exerted on other things and causes further exhaustion that is pushed down with dopamine or pleasure seeking behavior i.e. sex, alcohol, food, shopping, additional addictive or maladaptive behavior.
Here's the thing: the effort is a responsibility, as in the social responsibility to appear a certain way for the witnesses. Without any there is no reason to engage in effort. High-functioning depression is just sticking to a routine of survival and putting in enough effort to "pass" as "normal." The more people who are witnessing this the more it is necessary to wrap your identity and effort together into ways that make passing easier. It is a part of your primary responsibility to other people to engage in your routines to present properly.
It is in my experience that my depression gets worse when the sense of outward responsibility and therefore purpose is lessened. For Ilya, whom has an identity wrapped up in his job and releases some if not most of his maladaptive behaviors when he leaves Boston, he's left with what? His new identity can be fully realized or integrated, yet there's minimal shifting of effort because he and Shane are long distance. So what are the new coping systems, where are the distractions? Who is playing witness to his efforts to appear "normal"? What baseline is his "normal" in a new social group?
There is no one to take care of himself for, besides Shane, and he can kind of get himself together for his love on a schedule. So too much down time of not having others to be responsible to. People who know him well enough to realize when something is seriously wrong. And I think that's a key reason his depression gets worse because that and being safe is a great way for all your trauma to hit you in the face.
The idea of ābut everyone knows thatā needs to stop.
I saw a post about someone chiding Millennials for not knowing about JKRowlings transphobia, and asking how it is at all possible that people can exist in the world and the internet and, you know, not know.
Which I mean, I get. It is so present in so many of my online spaces that it seems astounding that someone could simply be ignorant! It feels impossible!
But let me tell you a story:
I went on a girls trip with a bunch of friends. All of us are rather incredibly liberal and all of us are incredibly online.
One girl would not stop talking about Harry Potter.
At one point, another girl asked her why she was ok with supporting it, and she had no real clue that JK Rowling was at all transphobic. She had heard that she likes to support Lesbian causes and thought āoh ok cool!ā And that was it. She was AGOG with the news and rather horrified.
I must once again emphasize that she was an incredibly online person. Sheās a foodie and a restaurant blogger.
Later in the trip we were picking restaurants and I suggested one I found on Google, and she gasped at me. Actually gasped, asking how I could ever be okay picking that one.
The shock mustāve been on my face, because she then told me all of the shitty things that restaurateur does. He abuses staff. Underpays them. Fires them on a whim. Is known for being one of the worst people to his employees in the entire restaurant business on this coast.
And she was so shocked I had never heard of this. Because in her mind, I was just as online as her. And in her online world, EVERYONE knew about this guy.
So I think the moral of this story is: always approach the other person with some empathy. Even online people, even people you think MUST know about how bad people are, may not have heard. It may truly be just them being on a different sphere of the internet than you.
So be gentle, be kind when letting people know they might not have heard about the cancellation of XYZ person. Donāt assume that everyone knows all the same info as you.
By all means, let them know so they can make informed decisions, but being kind will go a lot further than attacking them for some info they might not know yet.
Sometimes Iām looking for something online - often āhow toā articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decadesā worth of experience. I donāt want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesnāt understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I donāt know what search settings to put into Google to get this.
thank you for articulating this cri de coeur for me
ngl these days iām just happy when itās not a video
search.marginalia.nu is the search engine you want!
The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they arenāt sufficiently search engine optimized.
āIt is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didnāt even know you were looking for. If you search for āPlatoā, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaimanās blog.
If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, youāre on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?
I donāt expect this will be the next ābigā search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.ā
i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!
it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.
INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.
tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but ā¦
My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.
Good luck out there surfing the cyberweb, you crazy cats. I love the shoelace website too - Ianās Shoelace Site [link], unless thereās another. My personal favorite old-school site is Alysionās string figure collection [link].

The first rule of fandom is have fun. The second rule of fandom is find an enabler and become an enabler. Yes you should write that fic. What if it was even hornier? What if it was angstier? What if you wrote it just for me?

OMG YOUāRE RIGHT
Not that I think all marriages are doomed but when deciding who to marry you should ask yourself āis this someone Iād want to divorce?ā As in, is this someone I believe would be mature and fair, even when theyāre upset and donāt particularly like me at the moment. Is this someone I could continue to trust while going through an adversarial process? And if the answer is no, donāt marry them.
To add on to these questions, here are some I asked myself before getting married:
-Is this someone I can depend on to be compassionate and help me when grieving the loss of a parent?
-Is this someone who loves me if we suddenly no longer have sex?
(Good thing I did because my partner is now paraplegic and sex is painful for themāwhy would I want to hurt my partner when all I want is to see them smile?)
-Is this someone I can trust to be open and honest, even if it might hurt my feelings, and be kind in how they talk to me about what ever it is?
-Is this someone who will help support my friends and family the same way I will theirs?
-Is this someone who wonāt get frustrated at me when I have a flare up?
Thereās a ton of questions I asked myself before getting married. I waited until I was 28 to settle down, before that I was a feral heart breaker.
PS: Donāt settle for someone who does not treat you like their best friend. Your partner is supposed to be held at higher expectations than your best friend, remember that.

I need to follow up to say I reblogged this last night, and this morning I got some of the best news of my life, like, a life dream come true news thing.
Bagel what are your powers
FUCK, I though it was just another lucky meme but LISTEN. Since a week ago I was waiting a phone call to confirm me if I got a job or not in my university. I reblogged this yesterdayās night ājust for fun and because I donāt want any bagel to be mad with meā, and todayās afternoon, while I was losing my time as always, the professor I was supposed to work with called me and asked me for my personal information to start working with her.

Thank you, Black people in fandom spaces. Thank you, Black creators and Black lurkers. Thank you Black artists, Black writers. Thank you, Black bloggers, Black influencers. Shoutout to those Black characters, both canon and original. Thank you, Black people, both queer and cishet.
Your perspectives matter. Your representation matters. You are not bothersome for demanding equal treatment in fandom. It is not your responsibility to make fandom more welcoming and inclusive to you. It is not your sole responsibility to create all of the Black-centered content. You are not "ruining" anyone's fun for demanding better for yourself, and anyone who says otherwise can go fuck themselves. Any fandom worth being a part of should have no room for racism in it.
Black people in fandom, you are wanted. You are needed. You are loved and appreciated. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
And since they don't get told it near enough, thank you, Black women especially!!!

I think I am officially Fandom Old. I am so worn out from the arguments on who's the top or the bottom (who cares), what is allowed to be written (anything you want, bejeebus), what is Problematic (I know, just tag it), what other people Should Do (they Should live their lives free of judgment). There isn't a Right Way to do things. Tag your stuff appropriately, don't read stuff you don't want to read, and leave other people (me) alone.
There is nothing quite like the freedom of having gone through all of the Discourse and come out the other side into the promised land of Not Giving A Fuck.
The three keys to the promised land areĀ āBlock, Unfollow, and Do Not EngageāĀ
How it feels to have curated your space in fandom
Reposting this so it gets to the right people!!
Edit: Saline beats milkāit is AGAINST the usage of pouring milk into your eyes. It is suggesting that if you do not have access to a saline solution or water somehow, milk is your far LAST resort. Itās not a substitute. Use WATER above all else, itās incredibly accessible
Sterile saline meant to go in eyes can usually be found in pharmacies near the contact solution - and if you can't find it, contact solution should work pretty well too and is also sterile. If you wear contacts and already have some, bring it. (Do not wear contacts at a protest where tear gas may be used.)
