Regina looks up, her eyes darkening ever so slightly.

"I never claimed that I hate her."

Her gaze drifts back to Emma.

"And yes, I don't want her to die, because that would give my mother exactly what she wants."

Ruby raises an eyebrow as Regina's fingers brush lightly along Emma's cheek.

She isn't entirely convinced.

“Damn,” she breathes, running her finger along the smooth wooden edges. The work looks beautiful, even unfinished. “I guess I need to call Regina.”

Ruby furrows her brow. “Why Regina?”

“Oh right, I forgot to tell you. Her car broke down last night and so I helped her. While I changed the tire, she told me that the house and this carpentry used to belong to her dad.”

The waitress gasps as she looks around the dimly lit basement. “Holy shit, I knew nothing about that. To be fair though, the whole Regina thing remains a mystery.”

Emma understands his concern, and she even appreciates it. Regina can be tough and sometimes not nice at all. Most of the time she carries herself with a condescending and aloof air that makes others wary. It's understandable that her friends and family struggle to believe Emma when she tells them that Regina is capable of real love and deep emotions. Yet when Regina interacts with Henry, there is nothing but pure love and care shining through for the boy.

It's been a week since she first met the blonde and Emma has occupied far more space in Regina's thoughts than she'd care to admit. There is something about her that Regina can't quite place. Something familiar and genuine. Maybe it's the way Emma carries herself: confident without being arrogant, capable without feeling the need to constantly prove it.

“Yes, I want to be with you but under one condition.”

Ruby covers Emma’s hand and smiles. “We are best friends Emma, we go through thick and thin. Although, you being a God wasn’t on my bingo card. But hey, at least I get to say ‘my best friend is a badass god!’” 

Emma laughs and shakes her head. “There’s nothing badass about me…” 

“Don’t be so modest.” She lowers her voice, “and Regina being your ex is sort of poetically, Justice and Vengeance.” 

“We are not ex lovers,” Emma interrupts quickly. “It’s a bit deeper than that…”

She stops dead in her tracks, causing her friends to stop as well. Kathryn follows her line of sight. “Oh damn…” 

The brunette feels her pulse quicken, the urge to walk over there really strong. But she can’t and she shouldn’t. She has no right. 

“Come, let’s go over there,” Kathryn proposes.

“No, I have no right, Kathryn, and it would raise even more suspicion.”  

“I’m not talking about throwing a jealous fit.” She huffs, before stalking over to Emma and the other woman. Fred looks apologetic at the brunette as he follows his wife.

Regina bites back a groan, but lastly follows them.

Then Regina exhales, the tension in her shoulders easing just enough as she lowers the blade. She doesn’t step back right away, her eyes still fixed on Ruby as if she expects her to change into something else.

Ruby doesn’t wait. She slips out of Regina’s grip and backs away quickly, rubbing her throat. “Damn, Emma. I knew you liked them feisty, but murderous feels like a strong choice.”

“Are you okay?” Emma asks, stepping closer.

Ruby enters the women’s locker room when she sees Emma changing into her work clothes. “How did the evening go?” She waggles her eyebrows, earning a scoff from the blonde.

“It was nice, we had dinner, then talked and eventually went to bed.”

Regina cackles, twisting her wrist slightly so the vines tighten around Emma’s arms and legs.

Emma struggles against the hold, knowing perfectly well that the harder she fights the tighter the vines will get. But she is angry, tired, and hungry. Common sense is not something she possesses right now.

Suddenly a surge of raw power slams into Regina and knocks her off her feet.

She brushes past her, taking off her jacket as she walks into the kitchen. Her friend furrows her brow, but follows Emma.

“I’m not banging Regina…” She says, as she gets a beer from the fridge.

Ruby huffs crossing her arms over her chest again when she leans against the counter.

“Because Killian talked about mowing lawns half-naked? That’s just him. He’s... Killian.”

Regina rolls her eyes. She knows Killian is eccentric, but still, this feels too unprofessional.
