i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I don't know about a news story, but my first "political" memory was something about the torture memos

I have memories of seeing tanks in the desert for days during the war of the first Bush president, but also remember an airplane disaster of 1992, in the Netherlands, the "Bijlmer disaster" when a boeing hit a giant apartment block and caused it to burn for days. To this day it's a story that's very controversial, with a lot of government documents still being kept from the public. Rumors have it that there were chemical stuff, possibly even radioactive stuff, that poisoned the people and animals living in the area and caused a lot of illnesses in the years that followed. But none of that ever got confirmed by officials, not even now after 33 years.

I type over a 100 consistently. Took 2 weeks of typing classes when I was 12, then bought myself a typewriter, a year later a computer, and never stopped typing the way I was taught.

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

it's probably from assholes making asks a minefield of trolling/harassment for years with no real blocking ability, which turned people off from allowing asks on their blogs so as a whole the site moved away from it

but now that we do have better blocking, we should try to revive it.

You might also say "I have way more followers now, but way less asks!" and while this may be true, how many followers do we have that are inactive? I have more followers now than I did in 2015 or so - but back then there were so many notes in my tumblr each day, from people liking and reblogging posts. That too has dropped down to next to nothing. I have thousands of followers, but doubt there's more than 50 active accounts seeing my posts now.

Anyways, my ask box is open too.
