Legolas pretty quickly gets in the habit of venting about his travelling companions in Elvish, so long as Gandalf & Aragorn arenât in earshot theyâll never know right?
Then about a week into their journey like
Legolas: *in Elvish, for approximately the 20th time* ugh fucking hobbits, so annoying
Frodo: *also in Elvish, deadpan* yeah weâre the worst
Legolas:
~*~earlier~*~
Legolas: ugh fucking hobbits
Merry: Frodo whatâd he say
Frodo: Iâm not sure he speaks a weird dialect but I think heâs insulting us. I should tell him I can understand Elvish
Merry: I mean you could do that but consider
Merry: you can only tell him ONCE
Frodo: Merry. Youâre absolutely right. Iâll wait.
#legolasâ hick accent vs #frodoâs âi learned it out of a bookâ accent #FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
Legolas: umm well your accent is horrible
Aragorn: *hollering from a distance* HIS ACCENT IS BETTER THAN YOURS LEGOLAS YOU SILVAN HICK
Frodo: :)
Frodo: Hello. My name is Frodo. I am a Hobbit. How are you?
Legolas: yâalldâveâffâve
Frodo, crying: please I canât understand what youâr saying
Ok, but Frodo didnât just learn out of a book. He learned like⌠Chaucerian Elvish. So actually:
Frodo: Good morrow to thee, frend. I hope we twain shalle bee moste excellente companions.
Legolas: Wots that mate? âEre, you avinâ a giggle? Fookinâ âobbits, I sware.
Aragorn: *laughing too hard to walk*
@ghostriderofthearagon
dYinGggGgggâŚ
i mean, honestly itâs amazing the Elves had as many languages and dialects as they did, considering Galadriel (for example) is over seven thousand years old.
english would probably have changed less since Chaucerâs time, if a lot of our cultural leaders from the thirteenth century were still alive and running things.
theyâve had like. seven generations since the sun happened, max. frodoâs books are old to him, but outside any very old poetry copied down exactly, the dialect represented in them isnât likely to be older than the Second Age, wherein Aragornâs foster-father Elrond started out as a very young adult and grew into himself, and Legolasâ father was born.
so like, three to six thousand years old, maybe, which is probably a drop in the bucket of Elvish history judging by all the ethnic differentiation that had time to develop before Ungoliant came along, even if we canât really tell because there werenât years to count, before the Trees were destroyed.
plus a lot of Bilboâs materials were probably directly from Elrond, whose library dates largely from the Third Age, probably, because he didnât establish Imladris until after the Last Alliance. and Elrond isnât the type to intentionally help Bilbo learn the wrong dialect and sound sillier than can be helped, even if everyone was humoring him more than a little.
so Frodo might sound hilariously formal for conversational use (though considering how most Elves use Westron heâs probably safe there) and kind of old-fashioned, but heâs not in any danger of being incomprehensible, because elves live on such a ridiculous timescale.
to over-analyse this awesome and hilarious post even more, legolasâ grandfather was from linguistically stubborn Doriath and their family is actually from a somewhat different, higher-status ethnic background than their subjects.
so depending on how much of a role Thranduil took in his upbringing (and Oropher in his), Legolas may have some weird stilted old-fashioned speaking tics in his Sindarin that reflect a more purely Doriathrin dialect rather than the Doriathrin-influenced Western Sindarin that became the most widely spoken Sindarin long before he was born, or he might have a School Voice from having been taught how to Speak Proper and then lapse into really obscure colloquial Avari dialect when heâs being casual. or both!
considering legolasâ moderately complicated political position, i expect he can code-switch.
âŚitâs also fairly likely considering the linguistic politics involved that Legolas is reasonably articulate in Sindarin, though with some level of accent, but knows approximately zero Quenya outside of loanwords into Sindarin, and even those he mostly didnât learn as a kid.
which would be extra hilarious when he and gimli fetch up in Valinor in his little homemade skiff, if the first elves he meets have never been to Middle Earth and theyâre just standing there on the beach reduced to miming about what is the short beard person, and who are you, and why.
this is elvish dialects and tolkien, okay. thereâs a lot of canon material! he actually initially developed the history of middle-earth specifically to ground the linguistic development of the various Elvish languages!
Legolas: Alas, verily would I have dispatched thine enemy posthaste, but yâallâdâve pitched a feckinâ fit.
Aragorn: *eyelid twitching*
Frodo: *frantically scribbling* Hang on which language are you even speaking right now
Pippin, confused: Is he not speaking Elvish?
Frodo, sarcastically: I dunno, are you speaking Hobbit?
Boromir, who has been lowkey pissed-off at the Hobbitsâ weird dialect this whole time: Thatâs what it sounds like to me.
Merry, who actually knows some shit about Hobbit background: We are actually speaking multiple variants of the Shire dialect of Westron, you ignorant fuck.
Sam, a mere working-class country boy: Honestly y'all could be talkin Dwarvish half the time for all I know.
Pippin, entering Gondor and speaking to the castle steward: hey yo my man
Boromir, from beyond the grave: j e s u s
Tolkien would be SO PROUD of this post
It got better
there may come a day when i do not reblog this post, but it is NOT THIS DAY
#wait sentinel aus are based on an actual show???#I thought they were just one of those inexplicable Fandom Things - im WHEEZING, i love this so much
never Once have I ever seen a reference to an actual extant intellectual property, itâs always âwhat if we had this super complicated codependent pseudo-magic sci-fi thing going onâ and then just running with it OTL
i do not have the spoons to FULLY get into it, as it demands, but the one with the military haircut (heâs a cop, a âprotectorâ, câest la vie) is Jim Ellison, former Army Ranger, repressed fool. curly haired bb is Blair Sandburg, an anthropology grad student who realizes Jim is a Sentinel of legend, latches onto him like a remora, and Jim basically leans on Blair like a crutch all the while pretending he doesnât care for him in a very âI made you a friendship braceletâ âugh grossâ âwell you donât have to---â âshut up Iâm gonna wear itâ way
they were handsyÂ
HANDSY I SAY
they STARTED handsyÂ
they moved in together in like. ep one.Â
they become partners in the cop sense, they do a lot of gift of the magi shit for each other, every time I start to think of the stupid shit they do for another I remember More Weird Shit, codependent fucking weirdosÂ
Okay, I absolutely MUST chime in For The Sentinel which NEVER gets the respect of its peers just because "the plots were a little convoluted" and the "central premise wore a little thin as the seasons went on." those men were in love. THOSE MEN WERE LOVERS!!!!!
What you need to know about The Sentinel is that the very first episode is about Jim Ellison acquiring mystical powers. YES I want to be clear, the way he acquires these powers is "problematical" and "not great, respecting indigenous cultures wise" but okay, so he's got these powers that make all of his senses amped up to dangeous levels. he can hear things no one else can hear, he can see things like he's fucking legolas, you get the deal.
so he goes to the doctor to be like "i feel weird" because of course, and Blair Sandberg, twink anthropologist to the stars, BREAKS SEVERAL LAWS to get in Jim's exam room and sayâi know how to help you. i know what's wrong with you. i know how to make life better. and jim ellison looked at the little twink man and said yes....YES to love YES to life YES to living in a 1 bedroom LOFT apartment together. YES to being soulmates and life partners! YES I'LL MARRY YOU!!!!!!
This is the ORIGINAL big gruff german sheppard/lil yapping chihuahua pairing. And fandom looked at this show and said "this is good. i will build a kingdom upon this land. from now on, these are the two genders: big, angry, powerful, forced to their knees by circumstances beyond their control AND small, jokester, has skills INVALUABLE to Big, bad self worth. And then so the sentinel/guide aus RULED the pervert community, and everyone rejoiced.
And then SPN looked at this, and said "but what if the guides also had wet butts" and u kno what? innovation is CRUCIAL.
my friend had Sentinel VHS tapes acquired from someone on the internet and basically every episode featured tough military man Jim being driven to his knees in agony verging on madness bc of his mystical senses being overwhelmed and tiny commie academic Blair soothing him and healing his agonies by touching him (and communicating with him via psychic leopards????) so they could save lives and the show wasnât GOOD but my god it was something
It's also the little black dress of AUs for other fandoms - Mulder/Scully, Clark/Lex, Derek/Stiles. It goes with everything! :)
So today I learned that The Sentinel was a show, and so what is the term for when you get un-Goncharoved?
I THOUGHT IT WAS A FANDOM TROPE LIKE OMEGAVERSE
God this was such an important fandom to me. My Sentinel friends are my family now, more than a quarter of a century later. Merryish, who first offered my fanfic a home* in â1997? 1998?âtaught my kid to snorkel 20 years later. Flummery are my kidâs fairy godmothers. I basically married astolat 25 years ago. And every time I see one of you Sentinel people online (waves to a bunch of you who reblogged this) I feel like Iâve run into someone from the old country! That fandom literally changed my life.
But also, fannishly, so inventive! Some of the first vids I ever saw back before there were computers âVHS vids, wonderful ones. (Shout out to GloRo!) Great great fanfic and art. I still have gorgeous zines from this period. And the loft tape! Go to fanlore and look up the loft tape you guys!!
*before the AO3! When you needed someone to host your fic! This is part of why we built the AO3! So many (so many!!!) Sentinel people involved in building the AO3! Astolat built the Sentinel archive, 852 Prospect, a decade before the AO3, that was our first practice archive software. That software was adapted and used in other fandoms like due South. Seah and I were both DS archivists. This is all part of the story of how the AO3 came about. The sentinel/guide trope is the least of it. The Sentinelâs impact on fandom is totally outsized considering what a minor show it was. But it had a great concept that it did not fully exploit, which I think is in fact, what an amazing fandom needs.
Yes, The Sentinel was a real show in the 1990s, and gave us one of the classic fandom tropes, please check out The Sentinel, Jim/Blair, and Sentinel AU pages on Fanlore!

so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, hereâs a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like youâre supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If thereâs an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
the spirit is unwilling and the flesh it feels not so good also
âCats donât actually love youâ
A cat is a small creature in the middle of the food chain that is fully aware that you are a very large thing that could stomp its head in at any moment and yet it chooses to rest its tiny little head on your leg for a nap and spreads out on the floor near you exposing its belly and its most sensitive organs. It brings dead mice and bugs to you to share food.
Donât you get it? This tiny thing trusts you. It wants to help you too. It licks your leg thinking that itâs helping. It kneads on you to find comfort. It shares its body warmth with you in the cold and gives you your space in the heat. It hisses at other mammals it sees outside including other cats in an effort to protect its family.
Cats love you so so much. But they will keep trying to eat plastic.
rip to the person who understood this comic the most
Yeah, but here's THE BEST PART OF THE STORY!

I still think that my favorite urban legend/folklore fact is that there are certain areas in New Orleans where you cannot get a taxi late at night not because it isnât safe, but because taxi companies have had recurring problems of picking up ghosts in those areas who are not aware that they are dead and disappearing from the cab before reaching the destination and therefore stiffing the driver on the fare causing a loss for the company.
An occupational hazard of cab driving I had not previously considered
I love that the nola problem here is not âghosts in my taxi cab,â but âghosts are FUCKING BROKE DEAD BASTARDS & I GOT BILLSâ
Horror is when ghosts get into cabs and scare drivers Magical realism is when cab companies have to develop policies to prevent ghastly fare-theft
In a book about the tsunami in Japan in 2011, the writer talked about how there was a huge increase in reports of ghostly activity. Apparently in Japan treating ghosts rudely is basically considered the stupidest thing you could possibly do. For months after the tsunami, taxi drivers would pick up a passenger only to have them give an address in one of the devastated areas. The cab driver often looked up halfway to the destination to find their fare had disappeared. Not wanting to be impolite to the person (even if they were dead) theyâd drive to the address, open the door to let them out, then drive away.
Merlin's Keep (and the Far, Far, Away Site) is gone and it's actually a big deal.
I don't know much about this situation, so if anyone can shed more light on this I would appreciate it, but I do want to take a moment to point this out for anyone else who may not know, because it feels important.
farfarawaysite.com is gone (and their socials on Tumblr and X/Twitter deactivated, too). This might sound dramatic but this is a significant loss for the Merlin fandom.
The site had been running since 1997, and was (in my opinion) a pillar of the Merlin fandom as an archive of every single high quality image of Behind the Scenes, Promotional photos, and individual galleries for all cast members from the core four, to the Knights, to characters like Freya (Laura Donnelly) and Eira (Erin Richards)--the woman who tricks Gwaine in the Diamond of the Day episodes.
I used this site back in 2011 and 2012. I know it existed before then, I know so many fan creators who used this website to this very day.
They didn't just do this Merlin, either, they did it for many, many other shows. This was a non-for-profit, fan run website, who seems to have simply done it for love and archive purposes.
I don't really know if I can even put into words how sad of a loss this is. Decades of work and care is just gone. This website was in many ways a love letter. If I can get one message across to anyone who ran the site, I just would want them to know they were deeply appreciated by so many people in this fandom.
The website is archived through the Wayback Machine here, but this doesn't include a backup of any of the high quality photo files they had stored. You can browse through and see what kind of images they had. I would argue thousands, if not hundred of thousands of pictures, are just gone. I am not quite sure if there is anywhere else that these photos were archived.
This is a sad day for our fandom. I love u farfarawaysite; and again, if anyone knows anything or is in contact with anyone who ran the website, I'd happily talk with them. I would love for the farfarawaysite to rise again.
I might've organised this Devil's Sacrament, but you rocked up to it in full ceremonial garb
apparently iâm a millennial woman
I mean, yeah, valid! but but but I also want to add on the fact that lotr AGGRESSIVELY rejects the âgrimdarkâ and âgrittyâ settings that is so prevalent in fantasy (and also in general) right now, because I physically can not shut up about it
It is hope and love and compassion that saves each character individually, and because of that, the world. Frodo fails in the end, but his acts of compassion from earlier in the story save the day. And even as the world is saved, it is acknowledged that Frodo failedâwithout judgement, without blame. He fails, and he is still loved.
And like what can happen in the real world, he is still irrevocably changed by his trauma. But there is still hopeâhe has to leave, but he leaves with the promise of healing, and the promise that his ever-faithful Sam will follow.
Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Sam; each and every one of the characters are driven by their love of the people around them and their hope for the future. They cling to that love and hope throughout their trials, and that bears them through.
Of course people are watching it for comfort!!!! Lotr is eternally consistent in its promise, which Sam articulates so clearly in The Two Towers: âEven darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, itâll shine out the clearer.â
Things are dark and awful and terrible, but it will not be that way forever. That is the promise of LOTR. A promise of hope, and the reminder that it is love and compassionâfor our friends, for our families, for the strangers weâve never even metâthat will save us in the end.
LOTR was the last time anyone in Hollywood was blisteringly, truly genuine. The good guys were good and kind and noble and the movie creators understood that this didnât make them boring, it made them bonkers-ass compelling and wonderful. No one winked at the camera at any point.
the thing about the mummy movies is that you really spend most of the time thinking "wow brendan fraser's character is so cool" or "man oded fehr is so mysterious and heroic" when the fact of the matter is that these two
are the absolute most batshit insane heroes in the entire franchise
these two are intellectual loner siblings with archeology backgrounds who read and speak ancient egyptian, hire a dude directly out of prison to take them to a lost city of gold, and fight mummies literally with their bare hands. twice.
no one in these movies stands a chance against the carnahans. frankly they're lethal in how willing they are to make the absolute and most undeniably deranged decisions. jonathan pickpockets a dude on fire. evy's resurrected from the dead and immediately remembers how to use sai. they're racking shotguns from a cliff in this scene and then proceed to blow away half the antagonists.
rick and ardeth should be so lucky
