Does anyone else sometimes have this extremely faint and vague feeling of worry and doubt, that what if everything I was taught at school and see online is a lie, propaganda, nonsense and fabrication, something that's been made up to conceal the fact that your whole home country/region is kept in an isolation bubble where you only think that you are free, and know real things about the real rest of the world. And then every time you see something in real life that works with the exact same logic or mechanics as you were taught at school and you're like oh woah. That is real.
Like sitting in a train and hearing someone speak a language you studied a little at school, and you find yourself recognising words here and there, the grammar is the way you were taught and you're like woah, that actually is a real language that people speak in real life. I wasn't taught to memorise some nonsensical word puzzle mechanic just to earn a grade, that's a real language that I could learn to speak with real people.
The rest of the world outside of my personal physical range of observation is really real. There's an above zero possibility that Spain exists.

I wouldn't say it's racist but it's definitely not normal. "The world isn't real, it was made up to fool me" is a pretty serious fear that you should probably talk to someone about.

Also like to point out that when her mother says āI was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid,ā (translation: I had you when I was your age) you have to remember her fatherās words: āearth hath swallowed all my hopes but she,ā (translation: all the other children died.)Ā The whole plot point of Juliet being an only child is explained by her mother being a Margaret Beaufort type who had her first child too young and it damaged her past the point of being able to bear more children.
Margaret Beaufort died in 1509. She was a major player in the Wars of the Roses, the swirling on-again-off-again civil wars that consumed England from 1455-1487. Romeo and Juliet was written and first performed in the early 1590s. Your average English person of Shakespeareās day would probably have had at least a vague understanding of who she was and what happened to her, because she was a key figure in recent history and was still getting passed around as a cautionary tale.
There are two great problems with what happened to Margaret (and that her parents are trying to do to Juliet). One is easy for modern people to spot (but was also a common response back in her own day). And thatās the moral implications of what was done to her. She was too young to be married, and it was horrifying that she was forced into it so young. Every one of the adults around her either acted immorally or failed to protect her. They were wrong. This is what modern people see, and itās important to remember that people back in her day mostly agreed with it. Youāre supposed to think itās fucked up! When girls were married that young (and it didnāt happen often!) it was a formality 99% of the time. It was for dynastic or financial reasons (the girl has lots of money and/or land and/or a title that her husband wants), but the ācoupleā donāt consummate their marriage for years. And itās not just that they would have separate bedrooms. They might not even live in the same country until the girl was in her late teens and physically and mentally mature enough to bear and raise kids. Hell, a lot of times they didnāt even meet until the girl was older! They had this thing called āproxy marriageā where you would have two separate ceremonies, in two separate places, with each party saying their vows separately, one in one city and the other in a different one. So, yeah, sure, the girl was technically married at 12, but she didnāt actually meet her āhusbandā in person until she was 17 and they didnāt start sleeping together until she was 20. That was a thing they did.
The other problem, the one that modern people donāt notice, is dynastic. See, marriage wasnāt generally because you loved someone. It was because you had the resources to support a family, and you or your family wanted to pool those resources with someone. Itās about āour family has these resources, and we want that to continue.ā Itās about continuity across generations. Itās about making sure that your children and grandchildren have the best possible resources to survive and thrive, whether those resources are land or a trade or a title or money or whatever. In order for this to work, you have to have kids! The family and the familyās resources depend on the married couple having children. If the couple doesnāt have children, the marriage is a failure. And that failure affects not only the couple, but both families. This is a really big problem. And you canāt have just one kid to pass on the family name, because half of all kids die in early childhood. If you want to be safe, you need several kids, to be sure at least one will survive to adulthood (when they can marry and pass on the family name and resources.
You know what happens when a girl has her first pregnancy too young? She is very likely to either die in childbirth, or have complications that destroy her future fertility. Just like Margaret Beaufort. Just like Julietās mother. In other words, the marriage is a failure, not just for her, but also for her family, and her husband (who canāt divorce her, itās not allowed except in extremely rare circumstances), and her husbandās family. So even the people who didnāt have a moral problem with adult men having sex with pubescent girls had a practical problem with girls married too young because you are very likely to destroy the entire purpose of the marriage by doing it. As Shakespeare reminds us in the play through Julietās mother having been married too young and only having one child.
Shakespeare is telling us āyeah, this is fucked up. but even if youāre the kind of awful person who doesnāt think girls marrying too young is morally wrong, itās also a problem for practical and dynastic reasons, donāt forget that by doing this wrong thing you are very likely to destroy what you most want out of it.ā
another thing i noticed, the year my local community shakespeare theater did r&j, and i made the costumes so i got to watch the show every night: part of why capulet is telling paris, take your time, get to know each other, no rush, is that he still has his nephew tybalt as his heir. as long as tybalt is in the picture, there is no pressure on juliet to go further with paris, than get acquainted. once tybalt is killed, then suddenly capulet needs an heir, he needs a husband for juliet, now, this week. (the role of capulet is best given to the actor in the company that can do over the top apoplexy, you need to believe his urgency comes at least in part by how clearly he could drop dead any moment from giving himself a stroke)
i feel like this play is often taught in middle schools as if it was somehow relevant to, or about, teen hormone storms. really it's got more to do with the social structures around family and inheritance. leaving that context out makes it confusing, why is capulet suddenly flipping from nice dad to evil dad?
I've been thinking about this play a lot lately. I really wanna highlight that Lord Capulet asks Paris to wait and get to know her, and to woo her, while Tybalt lives. While Tybalt is alive, Juliet has something of a reprieve, and her wellbeing as his only child matters more to Capulet. But once Tybalt has died, the gloves come off. Lord Capulet was worried about his daughter's wellbeing when he felt he had the space to care, but as soon as his dynasty is at stake, as soon as this becomes larger than Juliet's happiness, his consideration for her health and mental wellbeing get thrown away. Which also is due in part to the fact that Capulet's family is implicated in a brawl that has left several dead after the Prince's family EXPLICITLY told the Capulets and Montagues to stop fighting or face dire consequences, AND Capulet is trying to align himself with the Prince's family by marrying Juliet off to County Paris, a relative of the Prince. So to Lord Capulet, it is now less important that Juliet is happy, and more important than he reminds the Prince of his loyalty via this marriage and aligns his family with the Prince's before it's too late. And he believes this must be done, at any cost...until Juliet kills herself. And that's when he realises the devastating cost of treating his family as chess pieces. He realises his wrongdoing far too late.
Seriously Romeo and Juliet is HEAVY on the dynastic politics, and I think you can't fully understand the play without understanding how that all works, especially because the impact of dynastic marriages on women and girls is like. THE POINT of the play
being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that youāre supposed to do warm up sketches every time youāre about to work on serious art when youāre fuckin twenty-five
when i was in undergrad, it was kind of mentioned in and offhand way that we should do warmups, but we were never shown what that meant. And, yāknow, we were young so it didnāt matter so much.Ā
Being older now and having an art job itāsā¦kind of essential.Ā
So: a quick primer for those of you who are likeĀ āok but how do i actually go about doing this warmup thing.āĀ
1) you may be tempted to doĀ āa warmup drawingā which is just a drawing that will take longer than it needed to and probably be frustrating and kind of bad because you didnāt warm up first. Itās tempting but always a trick your brain is playing on you! Do not trust!Ā
2) warmups will vary based on what feels good to you/what task youāre about to do/what motor skills you want to practice. That being said, some good standbys:
a) circles. Just a whole page of circles on whatever drawing surface youāre going to be using, whether thatās your tablet or your sketchbook or a drawing pad on an easel. For these circles you should make sure that youāre drawing from your shoulder and not your wrist. In fact, you want to be drawing from your shoulder rather than your wrist most of the time! forever! your wrist is delicate please preserve it!Ā
In order to ensure that youāre drawing from your shoulder, when youāre holding your pencil or whatever drawing tool youāre using, the only part of your hand that should be touching the drawing surface is part of the last two fingersāsome people prefer the finger tips, but I tend to favor the first knuckles. Either way, the fingers should really be ghosting over the surface, providing guidance rather than support.Ā
I usually start with big circles and then go to smaller circles and lines of ellipses, and then try to fit circles and ellipses inside other shapes iāve already drawn as a precision exercise, but i donāt do that unless iām feeling loose
b) spirals! i donāt always do spirals, but if iām stiff and the circles just arenāt cutting it, spirals are a good fall back. I start from the center and work outward, going both clockwise and counterclockwise until i feel comfortable with the whole range of motion. Some people really care about getting perfect spirals but for me itās all about making sure iām comfortable with how iām moving so who really even cares about how the spirals look. Not me!Ā
c) lines! straight lines! in parallel! i do a mix of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. These are often more from the elbow than the shoulder, especially if Iām working on a smaller surface. For this exercise, I recommend holding the drawing tool perpendicular with the surface
d) connect the dots. This is a precision and accuracy exercise and takes two forms. The first is to draw two dots and then draw a straight line between them. The second is to draw three dots and draw the curve that connects them. This sounds a lot simpler than it is in practice. Take time to ghost over the line you plan to draw before actually committing to your line. (I donāt always remember where I picked up my warm up exercises, but Iām pretty sure I got this one from Scott Robertson. His how to draw and how to render books are very technical but also accessible and worth checking out)
e) cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. These help get your brain into a more volumetric space. I draw multiples of each, rotating the forms around, and Iāll often take the time to do some rough shading on at least a few of them
f) spidermans! This one is really good if youāre going to be storyboarding or working on dynamic poses. Just fill a page full of spidermans doing all sorts of acrobatics.Ā
g) beans. I donāt do beans too much anymore, but I know a lot of people like it so Iām mentioning it here. Fill an area with different size bean shapes without lifting your pencil off the paper.Ā
h) short medium and long line repetition. draw a short, medium, and long line on your page, and then draw directly on top of them 8 to 12 times, doing your best to exactly trace what youāve already drawing. Repeat with a wavy line. Iām bad at this one, which means I probably need to do it more.Ā
And there are lots more options too! Hit up youtube to see what other people recommend, put together your own go-to list, mix it up when youāre getting bored, etc.Ā
This is a long list, I know, but I usually donāt take more than 10 to 15 minutes to warm up, and I can warm up one handed while Iām drinking coffee, so, multitasking hurrah.Ā
Sometimes Iāll advance to a precision warmup and find that I havenāt loosened up enough yet; itās totally ok to go back to an earlier exercise! Also, all of this has the added benefit of kind of ritualistically getting you into the drawing mode so even if Iām not feeling it before I start, by the time Iāve gotten to the end Iām usually Ready For Drawinā. Brain hacks.Ā
so, yeah! thatās a lot of words, but! Warmups are important! Save your joints, take less advil, do better drawings!Ā
There's this thing I never realized I did when I was doing it that I like to think of as "Ownership of Space"
And it's that thing where you mentally place yourself as the second, auxiliary party to someone else that you consider to be "In Charge" of whatever space or occupation or responsibility you are assigned to
And when you are IN that mindset, it *feels* like you're being responsible. It *feels* like you're being respectful, and helpful, and contributing to the load.
But what you don't SEE- because it *feels* like deference- is that the other person who you're seeing as The Authority you report to- by being assigned that role, has also been assigned the invisible load of BEING YOUR MANAGER.
This is by FAR most commonly seen in husband-and-wife relationships, where the man says, "just tell me what I can do to HELP- you don't have to do it all by yourself, but it's like you won't even tell me when you NEED help. You just do everything and then get mad at me for not doing it first. I can help clean. I can help with the kids. I can help"
But I also see it- and am guilty myself of doing it- at work, at school, in public- that mental, "this is THEIR space, and i will be respectful and helpful to THEM"- without realizing that subservience in this manner isn't actually a good thing. That it actually shifts the burden of responsibility to the other person. That aspect was totally invisible to me.
I didn't understand that when I was told, "if you see something that needs to be done, just DO it", or, "take the initiative", what they ACTUALLY meant was, "I am not above you", or "you have equal say in what kind of environment you want to live or work in", or "I do not want full control over what happens here, I do not want to order you around, I do not want to be in charge, what I WANT is to co-command WITH you"
Being in The Assigned Authority position NOW, that is all so much clearer.
I am the senior member of my team at work, and now, every time I train a newbie, every time I finish catching them up to speed and giving them a list of everything that needs to be done, my next big hurdle seems to always be, "now take pride in the space when I'm not around". "Now don't assume I'll tell you when something is due or what orders to plan things in".
Now, having been on both sides of the struggle, I can appreciate the sticking points here
TO THE PERSON "IN CHARGE": The person deferring to you doesn't understand the invisible labor you're doing. They genuinely believe you know more, you WANT more, you see things they don't, and that they are being respectful and good by staying out of your way and waiting on your orders. THAT is the bit that's not clicking.
TO THE PERSON "WANTING TO HELP": "Help" implies that you are providing assistance to a problem that belongs to somebody else. Stop thinking like that. Understand that the problem belongs to BOTH of you equally, and consider what kind of shared space you BOTH want. What is your SHARED GOAL? Not THEIR goal, but a goal that belongs to you too. Own your space.
This is not a Commander-Lieutenant problem. This is a Partnership problem.

This is how I learned to do it and a good example of what you want to see in a short form tutorial: pinning, pressing, seam finishing, good fabric handling.
I would mention that you can make the pocket facing with a small panel of your matching fabric that is visible and the rest in a lighter fabric to reduce bulk. That's a lot of denim layers for comfort.

what if we admitted to each other that it's not always really romance that we want. What if we admitted that what we're really craving is intimacy and society taught us romance is the only way to get it.
This is a comment someone appended to a photo of two men apparently having sex in a very fancy room, but itās also kind of an amazing two-line poem? āHis Wife has filled his house with chintzā is a really elegant and beautiful counterbalancing of h, f, and s sounds, and āchintzā is a perfect word choice hereāsonically pleasing and good at evoking nouveau riche tackiness. And then āto keep it real I fuck him on the floorā collapses that whole mood with short percussive soundsābut itās still a perfect iambic pentameter line, robust and a lovely obscene contrast with the chintz in the first line. I went back to dig up this post because I was thinking about poetry.
This is one of those non-poem things that are among my favorite poems.
As the OP stated, the use of alliterative consonants is aesthetically just great, especially the placement of the strongest use at the end: āfuck him on the floor.ā The use of āchintzā is indeed great word choice.
Because Iām insane, decided to scan the poem:
Not only is the second sentence, indeed, perfect iambic pentameter, the entire poem is perfectly metered, though the first sentence has four iambs rather than five.
There are further things I love about this poem, though: I like the casual connotations of ākeep it realā juxtaposed with āchintz.ā It causes me to interpret the āchintzā more strongly as meaning something fake, a facade. There is also of course the coarseness of āfuck,ā which is a contrast with āchintzā but a different kind of contrast, gutsy and carnal where āchintzā is flimsy and inanimate.
And then there is the storytelling: there is SO MUCH storytelling in just these two lines. To break it down: The speaker is having sex with a married man, in the house he shares with his wife, which is āfilled with chintzāāsomething that here connotes fakeness, in contrast with ākeep it real.ā
The illicit encounter in the poem takes place within a house filled with facade, the flimsy construction of the wifeās marriage and domestic sphere, but the encounter itself is a taste of something āreal.ā Thatās a story, and itās just two lines.
This is EIGHTEEN SYLLABLES, yāall. The amount of meaning condensed into these eighteen syllables is stunning, and it is so elegantly done.
From a technical standpoint (and ive taken 300- and 400-level poetry classes so I can say this) this is damn near flawless as a poem.
Ah dang to go further; the floor is framed as a refuge. As if there is literally no other space in this house that hasn't been populated by his wife with flimsy inanimate fakery. There is no space for this man in this house save for the floor. There is no space for him on the sofa, oon the counter tops, and most notably, no space for him in the marital bed.
Iād also like to point out the use of the word āhas.ā The wife has filled the house with chintz. She isnāt filling the house with chintz. She doesnāt fill the house with chintz. She has filled the house with chintz. Use of the past-tense makes the wife a subtly removed element in the story, someone whose presence we see in the environment, but who is blissfully distant during the actors throes of passion. There is an element of physical as well as emotional separation from the wife that is catalyzed by being fucked on the floor. I don't know enough about stage magic to know whether or not this would even be possible to execute in practice, but I think it would be awesome to have a stage production of a play where every single possible character action is performed as some sort of a magic trick or stage illusion. Like if the script requires a character to take something out of their pocket, they instead pull it from some hammerspace seemingly out of nowhere, and in the same nature something that a character needs to hide somewhere real quick simply vanishes.
Someone who's trying to avoid eye contact during a serious conversation does so by fidgeting with something that seems to be breaking the laws of physics. Just levitating this coffee cup nervously in circles so that it's obvious to everyone that they're lying.
The key element in this whole thing is having none of the characters even aknowledge that anything that happens would be in any way out of the ordinary. They just live in a world where things like matter and gravity work differently from ours, and by the end half of the play, even the audience doesn't really actively notice that something strange going on in the background shouldn't be physically possible.
Yeah that would definitely be possible! It would be difficult as hell to pull off, for a variety of reasons, but something like that is completely doable.
Realistically, most things are doable in the theatre with enough creativity and skill.
But yeah the hardest part would be getting together a crew of enough people who were good enough at both stage magic *and* acting. Stage magicians have to be great at patter and misdirection, but that's a largely different set of skills to theatrical acting.
You would also need a director and/or dramaturg who has enough knowledge in stage magic to make sure the vision is not completely unrealistic - for example it is possible to vanish a car, but it's much easier to do that when it's the only major effect being done.
