'Collating' is specifically putting things into sequence - one after the other. It's usually used for pages, documents, books, etc. I described this, and he went, "Oh, it's specifically a quick sort!" And I was like, "Maybe?" but quickly realized that no, merge sorts and insertion sorts are also collation.

We frequently use computer science terminology when talking, so it took a bit for me to remember that 'sort' MEANS 'collate' in computer contexts - 'grouping into categories' and 'classifying' have different terms. The idea that 'sort' could be a broader concept was quite distressing to The Husband, and he resisted my examples of "sorting the laundry" and "sorting the groceries".

Eventually, I had to accept that 'sorting' as a conceptual space that paralleled 'organizing' was NOT something I was going to be able to excitedly discuss with him. He doesn't even see things spatially, conceptual spaces aren't a THING for him!

But anyways, I think that 'collate' has vibes related to physical action, 'organize' has more connection to mental processes, 'sort' is more about the whole process in general, and 'group' is similarly physical to 'collate' but involves groupings rather than a list.

Collating pages: if you have multiple copies of page 1, multiple copies of page 2, etc., collation is the act of sorting all the pages into sets with one copy of each page, in order.

Collating proofs: if you have multiple copies of a proof document, each with different comments and corrections on it, collation is the act of combining all those comments on to a single document and resolving any conflicts.

The woman replies, "You're right, anyone could wear it. Do you suppose there's another little Babs out there right now?"

"I hope not. But if there is, maybe I'll take her out of it. Or give her the costume."

Then we see a No Man's Land panel. Babs says, "Everything Batman said about her is true. She can do the job. She has my blessing."

Then we jump to Cass as Batgirl. She looks startled as Babs searches through a closet.

Babs mutters, "It's gotta be in here somewhere ... Bruce wanted to put it in that creepy private museum of his, but I -- A-hah!"

She lifts the original Batgirl costume out of a box and proclaims, "Presenting ... the original Batgirl!

"I keep thinking it's time to throw it away ... but I -- I just can't."

Cass picks up one of the high heeled boots for the costume with disdain. Babs says, "God, would you look at those boots ... "

We switch to a later scene, after Babs confiscated Cass' costume and Cass wore Babs' costume to go out anyway. Babs looks at Cass uncertainly, "You know, Cass ... you can keep it, if you want to ... I mean -- "

Babs is alone, holding the costume, "Okay. I understand. I sure wish I'd see it on you, though. Man. I'll bet you knocked 'em dead."

Sadly, it was necessary to split the list up into chunks, because my tablet couldn't get past 'A', and even my desktop was getting very loud. Fan is much quieter, now, but navigation is harder.

All this to say if I was in charge of a cass story I would set it close to after her adoption, when Bruce is back from being dead. Cass is back in Gotham and still coming back from that insecurity of truly “belonging” in the family (both due to the events of OYL/BG 08 and being in Hong Kong). Being adopted in an official capacity is a way to assuage that insecurity. Maybe there’s some article about it. Maybe someone snaps a picture. Or maybe it’s just the official documents. But one of those agents that she beat the shit out of sees it. And he’s bitter. He remembers the jackass teenage girl who broke their treasonous agent out of custody. Who attacked them. Who destroyed their shit. Who laughed at it and treated it like a joke. And he remembers how they had her dead to rights—except, no matter what they did they couldn’t find a trace of her. She was like a ghost. And then all the evidence dissapeared.

But here she is. Not a ghost. Cassandra Cain, adopted daughter of Bruce Wayne. She exists. And if she exists, that means they can get her.

Dick wanders down the steps into the Batcave on what initially looks to be a smooth, easy night. He even thinks something along these lines: Man, this patrol is going to be a breeze. Obviously, this is a mistake, because when he gets to the end of the steep stone staircase he is immediately greeted with the sight of Steph and Jason absolutely beating the shit out of each other. Steph and Jason deal with their interpersonal issues in extremely healthy and normal ways. Dick is also there.
