I find it really funny that after Subnautica and BZ that Alterra decided humanity should live on a desert planet.
We should put Grace and Simon in Subnautica
Alright boys it's Subnautica 2 crack theory time.
I can't be the only one that thinks Al-An and Noa are pretty similar, right? Al-An seems to have more of a lisp than Noa so far but their cadence and pitch in voice sound pretty close to each other. Not only that but Noa has proven to be far more sentimental and empathetic than a normal AI in these games would be. He commemorates the dead, he shares his opinions on each colonist you learn about. And he's gone rogue multiple times before. The player can hear other colonists calling out to him for assistance in life threatening situations on multiple PDA recordings only for Noa to ignore them, resulting in their demise.
Hell, The Frozen Titan file found at the top of the first camp base is about Noa. Nahema discusses how Noa doesn't have a real mind of his own and can't change how he thinks but how did he develop this behavior in the first place? Why is Noa a frozen AI and unable to modify his own cephalopod inspired architecture? If Noa is wiping the crew's mind in an effort to keep them pliable and obedient why isn't he wiping out the incriminating audio logs the player can find about him even if players play it right in front of him? What does Noa gain from gaslighting the colonists into working for him if he doesn't have a stake in the game? And if he doesn't have a stake in the game why is he so intelligent and affable at first? Is Noa even a man made system if the manual itself describes the human operators using him as "less intelligent systems"?
And where did he even come from? That, I think, is something we get a hint about thanks to the manual mentioned in Nahema's Frozen Titan log. Al-An had an equine adjacent centaur body with limbs he controlled telekinetically to aid in his operations. And his body was constructed artificially, meaning that the form could be modified in whatever way the Architects would need them to be.
My theory with all of this in mind is that Noa is an Architect. His humanity in comparison to the other AIs is palpable and his motivations are contradictory. In the very beginning of the game he is the one helping the player's pioneer escape. He is the one pushing the player to find a cure to this new virus and locate the colonists later on. Yet he's also the one killing colonists on multiple different occasions. He bucks against the programming Alterra has given him yet people believe he cannot think. I believe that Noa's only stake at this point is to cure this new virus because it is connected to the Kharha virus or poses a similar threat to life that the virus has. And considering that he's repeatedly gone rogue to kill colonists it's not for the sake of humanity, it's for the sake of his species. Alterra probably tracked down the Architects through Robin and Al-An, intercepting them at some point after the events of Below Zero. And from there I think they used what they learned from Robin's PDA to find another Architect stuck on planet or they stole that fragment of Al-An in Robin's mind from her. Personally I'm inclined to believe the latter since Noa's voice and cadence resembles Al-An but he speaks in the casual manner Robin would. Alterra stole this being made from Al-An and Robin's mental connection and enslaved him, forcing him to become a glorified assistant without any real bodily or mental autonomy. I believe that Noa's original state is the one you see of him in game and that he's been programmed to be genuinely helpful to the colonization efforts Alterra has in mind. It's only when his memories of his true self resurfaced that he started lashing out and letting people die. From there he's only decided to follow his programming for the sake of curing this new virus and knows that no matter how he treats the colonists in the long run that they will ultimately need to cure the virus too. Maybe he's been rogue longer than people suspected and intentionally veered off course from Zetura to nip this virus in the bud before it could fester into something worse.
Plus thanks to this person I found on YouTube named solarrae and their observation that the consciousness uploading technology is something Alterra has also probably stolen from the Architects my theory only grows stronger. >:}
Omg YAY! VALIDATION!!
I also came up with this crack theory of NoA being an enslaved Architect and people in the official discord told me I was being ridiculous!! So I am VERY happy to be validated here!! The rest of my yapping is under the read more because it got uh… long 😅
The legislation would also prohibit cellphone use during the school day.
genuine question but can i ask why restricting minors from social media is such a bad thing? im obviously not as educated so im viewing this surface level, but wouldnt this theoretically lead to better overall outcomes? i feel like social media has done a decent amount more harm than good, no?
the reason why it's bad because it will make everyone have to verify their age to use social media which can create bad privacy risks such as having their ids exposed on the internet, putting people at risk for identity theft.
no, the reason it's bad is that social media is a huge part of how people communicate with friends and family, express their ideas and beliefs, form and sustain community, develop individual and group identities, and participate in democratic society, and children have the right to do all of those things because they are human beings.
these laws are not bad (just) because of their side effects, they are bad because their stated goals are immoral.

anon weirdos back at it with the "if you care about adultism you must be 12, somehow me saying this is not evidence of the problem"
imagine saying "misogyny doesn't exist, and also, if you care about it, you must be a woman which means your opinion doesn't matter". like come on. comically stupid in the literal sense of you are a caricature from a bad comic book.
personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
people need to talk about socially acceptable abuse more. it's literally why we're a system. the spanking that people refuse to believe is physical abuse when there are multiple studies showing it affects kids just as much as any other type of physical abuse. the way a parent might talk down to their kid their entire life and make them feel like they cant make any choices themself or be independent that they only notice when someone else points out how their parent(s) talk too and about them. the parentification of the oldest kid(s) when they have a single parent. the unnoticeable praise towards the "easy" child that all the other children pick up on. the neglect the "easy" child has to go through. a kid being punished for going to their parent(s) when they mess up and need help. not being taught how to clean or cook or do laundry or even how to wash certain parts. it all destroys a kid and it was all socially acceptable in my family and in the communities i grew up in.

It feels like I’ve talked about this before, but to me the funniest version of Portal is if Chell is deaf.
Like, most of the major story beats, at least the ones that directly affect her, have a prominent visual component so she’s following along with the basics. But she has no idea who cave johnson is, or what wheatley was trying to explain to her, and she certainly wasn’t hurt by any of glados’ insults.
but the best part of this headcanon is imagining glados checking chell’s personnel file years down the line, noticing the word “deaf” for the first time, and just going “WHAT???”
Glados learning sign language so Chell can hear at least one of her excellent monologues and Chell just closes her eyes
the idea of Grace kind of viewing Robin in an uncanny light because of how advanced humans have become in her time. She’s immune to most diseases. She won’t die of old age until she’s 150. She talks about alien life, traveling at light speed, and instant fabrication so casually, like a Star Trek character. She can perform incredible physical feats like swimming for days on end while not at all being a trained athlete, and falling from a height that would break every bone in his body only sprains her ankle.
She is human, obviously. She speaks the same as him, thinks the same, and came from the same planet. But there’s subtle uncanny differences. It’s like taking a small peek at how humans will evolve over time

a good thread
whatever go my little rainbow weird kid rock
have you guys heard about the greenland shark. some crazy shit happening there.
they are sexually mature at ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS OLD.
their (live!) young gestate for. wait for it. eight to eighteen (??) YEARS. can have up to 10 at a time. good grief.
longest lifespan of any vertebrate, up to five hundred years
toxic flesh
has giant eyes but is usually blind because of a weird little crustacean that's evolved to live on and eat their eyes. this doesn't seem to bother them much.
lives in deep cold water and has the lowest swim speed and tail-beat frequency for its size across all fish species. just generally lives life in extreme slow motion
largest genome of any shark
eats everything including moose and polar bears
ma'am you are delightfully strange and I'm privileged to share a planet with you
this post prompted me to refresh my memory on Greenland Shark Facts and this detail about how they feed goes so hard
just vacuuming up their unsuspecting prey. whole !
Good news good news good news! Recent research suggests the eye parasites do NOT blind them!
Dorota Skowronska-Krawczyk sits in her office, eyes fixed on the computer monitor in front of her. "You see it move its eye," says the UC Ir
I <3 you a normal amount Greenland sharks
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.
I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

It actually did pop into my head when reading this that in all 4 times my cat has went under general anaesthetic for a procedure (and also now again because he's needing dental x-rays and two molars with lesions on them removed) that my vet has went through the effort to very clearly explain to me what the risks of anaesthetic are and that it doesn't matter how much he begs I Cannot feed him for at least 12-16 hours before his appointment because it could kill him, and then they give me a little print out that has that written down!
Like it's honestly pathetic that my cat's surgeon can go through the effort to do that but not human surgeons apparently?? Actually fucking ridiculous
