I think this ship (spaceship) is really funny

Now as an adult working in security I get SO MANY folks- upper-middle aged mostly- coming to me to 'rat out' people they think are faking it.

I was once sent into a bathroom because a client demanded that the "fucker won't get out, so go drag them out"- I was NEVER going to do that, so I did a wellness check instead. You know who it was? A person recently released from the hospital after a car accident. They had a hole in their skull and major hearing loss. They couldn't answer the owner because they couldn't HEAR the owner.

Another time about a homeless man who got around town by kicking the ground from his wheelchair. "You know he doesn't actually need that thing, his legs work fine, it's just for pity points"- Oh, so he's not paralyzed, his wheelchair is performative? Funny story Dale, I actually know that guy, he was backed over by a truck and has chronic pain from his shattered pelvis. But sure, let's make him stand up and walk everywhere so nobody feels too bad for him and tries to help him or something.

Two characters living alone ended up taking care of a pair of babies, and there have been several comments about how "the babies are the priority", "save the babies", "we knew what was most important" and I guess I don't see the logic, or rather, I know it's not logical - it's emotional and also symbolic. On one hand yes, I believe that a central role of society is to take care of the vulnerable; that is a cornerstone of my politics. However, in a day to day survival scenario where you need to save either an adult or a baby, I don't think you should automatically pick the baby Just Because. It seems reasonable to save the adult, because you need their experience and pair of hands. You can always make more babies if you need to. Making an adult takes a lot more time. But babies tend to attain this exalted, near-religious status in these kinds of stories.

But the nuclear family is not how humans are supposed to raise the babies. Human babies are NEEDY and we evolved to take care of all of them AS A GROUP. That means a dozen or more adults looking after the baby, not only the parents. This habit of isolating the baby and only letting the mother and maybe one other person care for the baby is NEW. The "nuclear family" is called that because it's FROM THE NUCLEAR ERA. It was INVENTED, on PURPOSE, by people trying to sell a brand-new shiny futuristic lifestyle--the Suburbs.

But none of it is natural or even practical. In fact, the Suburban Nuclear Family is purposely NOT practical for a low-infrastructure situation. Nice White Neighbourhoods were created simultaneous and possibly in response (at least in part) to the influx of non-white people to cities, and White Flight. They're reliant on infrastructure that got WAY more money invested in it in the post-war period: Roads, Cars, Hypermarkets, Sanitary Sewers, and the Public School System. They're reliant on the pre-social media capitalist empire that was exploiting most of the surrounding countries. Like, so much of this "babies first, mothers last" attitude is an expression of wealth combined with the underlying Puritanism of American culture.

Holy fucking THANK YOU OP for saying this!! i feel like I’m going insane correcting people on this because I’m (and OP) are seemingly the only one(s) who pay proper attention to the databank entries apparently!

The Axum Rosetta Stone is not an Architect structure! It is not! Everyone needs to check the damn Wiki before theory crafting! The databank entry for the Rosetta Stone literally says it clearly made by the Axum for Architect Visitors!

It even says “We call ourselves Axum. We call you Architects.”

The writers could not be more clear on this if they even tried!!

The structure is also very much not Architect in construction nor design, it mimics their style, but it is not an Architect structure! It is made out of a titanium alloy first and foremost, and I’m (fairly certain) that the Architects do not use titanium as a building material! Iirc in Subnautica 1 Riley’s PDA notes that Architect structures are made out of an unknown alloy that it can’t identify when entering a precursor structure. That one I’m a little less sure about, but I definitely remember that being mentioned somewhere at some point.

Now mind you, the two other adults we were with were straight. Very supportive straights, but straight. And their kids I babysit for are like...8 and 5 (the 5 year old is figuring out gender expression, which we love). All that to say that after less than an hour of knowing me, the cousin was drifting to my side and hanging out with me more so than their own aunt and uncle. Queer finds queer lol

It was kind of crowded after the parade so we all went for lunch, and afterwards they were like "hey before we leave I really want to try and buy a rainbow flag" and we were all like "yeah ofc" and set out to find a booth that wasn't crammed with everyone in the city.

Nothing in the world more satisfying y'all than watching this kid eye all the rainbow flags, hesitate, look back at me, and then very slowly turn to point to the trans flag and ask for that one instead. Because it's the one they REALLY wanted, but I think if they had gone up to the vendor with a bunch of straight ppl in tow they might not have picked it. One (1) visibly queer person hanging out with them for a few hours was all it took for them to feel more comfortable in their own skin. And I'm not even trans myself.
