These three versions of the same image taken by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA's Mars rover Curiosity illustrate different choices that scientists can make in presenting the colors recorded by the camera. The left image is the raw, unprocessed color, as it is received directly from Mars (and as available on the MSL Raw Images Web site: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/). The center rendering was produced after calibration of the image to show an estimate of "natural" color, or approximately what the colors would look like if we were to view the scene ourselves on Mars. The right image shows the result of then applying a processing method called white-balancing, which shows an estimate of the colors of the terrain as if illuminated under Earth-like, rather than Martian, lighting.

that black thing in the center of the circle serves the dual purpose of creating a shadow to help calibrate the colors, and also acting as a sundial. it's utility as a sundial was suggested by bill nye, who had inherited a fascination with sundials from his father, who manufactured them, and he helped design and stress test the first sundial to make sure it wouldn't snap off and damage the rover in transit.

Anyway it was nearly crazy enough. It was just a competently yet blandly written romance between an Amish single father and a woman with a troubled past, BUT at one point the villain gives his name as Pete Peterson and then 70 pages later someone’s finally like “so that’s probably a fake name” and then the villain’s real name? Phil Phillipson. I’ll bump the book up to a C+ for that alone.

Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.

I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'

#stop trying to curate children's reading materials so that they only read things they already understand #kids SHOULD be given stories involving dated vernacular and elaborate verbiage and new concepts #will they understand it all? sure won't #but it's a stepping stone in LEARNING #(also if a child of intermediate reading age can't read a full length novel? that's an issue)#(an issue that might have many different causes (development or attention or exposure etc) but still an issue)
