"Why is the vampire lestat all about lestat"
this is the opening of the book jsyk
There are two types of iwtv fans atm
Those who are taking the shit the comes out of lestat's mouth seriously
And those who've met a contrarian brat before
Yeah, Lestat's narrative voice was cringe af. But have you read how Anne wrote him in 1985?
I will die on the hill that this is the most faithful modernization of Anne's Lestat Voice they could have managed and for better or worse, Rolin gets it.
There's a moment during the hotel hallway fight where Lestat says, "consider this sliding door of Dan."
If you don't know, Sliding Doors is a movie about (I haven't seen it, I just know it from pop culture references) timeline divergence, and how a life can be changed if one moment is different. Similar to the Butterfly Effect.
Lestat is talking about how if Daniel hadn't come to his rescue, and Lestat had been killed, the catastrophe this season is hinting at would never have happened.
But I particularly like this analogy because Daniel has been The Sliding Door of this whole series since season one. Because while there have been time period changes in the adaptation, the barebones structure of the story remains the same: Lestat goes to New Orleans, Lestat meets Louis, they make Claudia, Louis and Claudia run away to Europe where they meet Armand, Claudia is killed by Armand and his coven. Time placement may be different, but the linear movement of everything is the same. The first major divergence (to me) is when Daniel DOESNT write the book in the 1970s. There is no second interview in the Vampire Chronicles books. There is no Daniel walking out of Divisadero Street and living a relatively normal human life. Armand and Louis leaving with Daniel's tapes so he cannot remember and cannot write the book is to me the "sliding doors" moment that creates two paths: the books' path and the show's path.

Me when I heard tvl was going to be dropping the episodes weekly: Oh awesome!! I love it when shows do that so that fans don't have to binge 7+ hours in one sitting to avoid spoilers, and so that there's enough time between episodes to build up suspense and for the fans to make theories! That's great!
Me when I watch the premiere and have to wait another week: What. Can I have another episode tomorrow?? NO?? I HAVE TO WAIT A WEEK?!?!??
so happy to see these freaks in my screen again heres a doodle

what I fucking love is how tvl was written in the 80s and lestat is constantly sayinf shit like “as the kids say 🤪 that’s so rad!!” or whatever, and to me, reader of the vampire lestat in this modern age, that does NOT register the way anne rice intended it.
like it is supposed to feel jarring and insane. it is supposed to feel like lestat has been violently submerged in modern young people trends and culture and is now repeating all the new words he learned like a beautiful fresh baby. but because the book is from 1985, all I think is oh interesting huh I didn’t know that slang term even originated in the 80s how vintage how retro how lestat wow he’s so embarrassing aw aw so cute.
but amc in all their incredible genius decided that honoring anne rice’s original vision of writing an extremely modern and weird book that fully embodied the era it was written in was more important then bringing back the 80s nostalgia thing that streaming services love and it’s incredible to me. now I get to listen to lestat say shit like “labubu FOMO cosplay reddit discord Gen Z more like gen SNOOZE 🤪🤪🤪 safe space pronouns donald trump labubu tiktok dance 🕺🏻” and suddenly I understand what it felt like to be a young anne rice reader in 1985. God…. I understand.

hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"
some other hits:
Princess: an effeminate and relatively youthful male homosexual or lesbian (1931-4)
Daffodil: effeminate young man (1925)
To throw a fuck into: to have sex with (1919)
Top sergeant: a masculine lesbian (1939) [‘she takes command of the girls’ privates’]
Lily: penis (1919)
Wolf: sexually aggressive man (1847); a homosexual top (1918)
Soul kiss: a deep kiss, involving putting one’s tongue into one’s partner’s mouth (1907)
Tom: a lesbian (1909); [in 'old tom'] prostitute catering to lesbians (1966)
Church mouse: a male homosexual who frequents crowded churches in order to fondle any potential sex partners. (1941)
Discover one's gender: to accept or acknowledge one’s homosexuality (1941) / Lose one's gender: To return to living as a heterosexual
Minty: a masculine lesbian (1941)
Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.
Anyways feel free to add y'all's favs to this post. & if you use this for gay historical fanfic please share with the class
#OH THIS IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HELPFUL#writing#resources#saving for later#maybe i should move my 1920s story from '25 to '27 because..... bro..........
note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.
also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:
Best boy: a sweetheart, a boyfriend, a husband. (1893) [w the obvious equivalent term 'best girl']
Honeydripper or honeydrips: a sexual partner (1917)
Like. Honeydripper?????? That's so horny I can't stop thinking about it. We need to bring THAT back

This information has enriched my life forever
one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my ex was when they were still getting used to Celsius and asked me "what's 20 degrees?" and instead of converting it, I said "it's the highest your dad will ever let you set the thermostat and when you say you're cold he tells you to put on another sweater, we're not made of money" and they went "oh, 68"
the fact that this reference was that fucking precise was something they went on to tell people about for years.
