An early trailblazer in the fight against HIV/AIDS and a staunch and outspoken LGBTQ+ ally, Elizabeth committed her time and energy to the cause when her friend and co-star Rock Hudson was diagnosed with AIDS prior to his passing in 1985. Elizabeth went on to become a co-founder (alongside Dr. Mathilde Krim) of the first AIDS research center amfAR, and later founded her separate Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991 with the specific focus of providing nutritious meals (as well as medical and financial assistance) to people living with HIV and AIDS. She also lobbied the U.S. congress to contribute more money for AIDS research and education, devoting the last twenty-six years of her life to the cause. After Elizabeth passed away in 2011 at the age of 79, a large portion of the $156,800,000 raised at the Christie’s auction of her legendary jewelry collection was bequeathed to her charity in order to continue providing the services and assistance she believed were important in perpetuity. Still actively raising funds today, Elizabeth’s grandson Quinn Tivey is now an officer and co-trustee of her foundation. Reflecting on his grandmother’s humanitarianism and advocacy, he recently stated: “The fight against HIV/AIDS was such a vital part of her legacy, and although the fight is far from over, I’m honored to see the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation continue her work, educating legislators, raising awareness for the public, disproving myths and decreasing fear and stigma. Grandma stood up for what she believed in, living boldly and courageously. She would never buckle under pressure, and she certainly would not support the status quo if the status quo didn’t feel right.”
nobody better say a goddamned word against Elizabeth Taylor in front of me, is all I can say. She fought this fight before it was popular, before it was acceptable, even before people knew it WAS a fight. She didn’t care if it made people think less of her. She fought it.
There is no equivalent among gay men of them fighting for women's rights. But there is plenty of evidence of their misogyny and profound contempt for women. Women like Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Di, Angela Lansbury and so many anonymous women who took a stand for gay men when it wasn't easy or fashionable were thoroughly stabbed in the back when women's rights became endangered.
Take a leaf off of men's book and fight only for yourself. That's what they do! There is no reciprocity. They simply feel entitled to women's free labour and undying loyalty. So stop it and stop being subservient to them.
John Stoltenberg, A Feminist Guide to Gay Male Misogyny
A couple of months ago the Oscars, the 2013 Oscars, opened with a song that Seth MacFarlane sang.
A show of hands, does this ring a bell, did anybody here in the room see this? Maybe about half of you.
Well, let me recap it for those who didn't see it: Seth MacFarlane begins singing a song and the song is "We saw your boobs", and it's a recital of different female actors names and films they appeared in; and the chorus is "in the movie that we saw we saw your boobs". He sings this song and then the curtains open: it's the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus. They join in on the last verse.
Remember that the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus routinely reminds people of how many of its members died because if AIDS.
What wasn't apparent at the time was that at least four of the women actors who were named in that song lyric, their breasts appeared on screen because their characters had been raped.
Jodie Foster in "The Accused", her breasts were visible on screen during a flashback her character is having about the rape. And her assailants are violently ripping her breasts out of her shirt. (sing songs) "In the movie that we saw we saw your boobs".
Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry", she's playing a trans man, Brandon Teena, we see Hilary Swank's breasts during a medical examination after Teena's character has been brutally raped on the trunk of a car. Her breasts are swollen and dark with bruises and Hillary Swank as the character flinches. (sing songs) "In the movie that we saw we saw your boobs".
Similarly Halle Berry in "Monsters Ball", her name was referenced in this song lyric; Charlize Theron, in "Monster". And I'm setting the scene in this way for my topic today, which is gay male misogyny.
(...)
There's actually a conversation about gay male misogyny going on online. It's fairly extensive (…) It's very disturbing, but in a culture that doesn't see gay men who are perceived as queer as men having male privilege our misogyny and sexist acts are instead read as diva worship or celebrating women, even when in reality they are objectification, assault and dehumanization.

England Put 35 Pine Martens In Forest of Dean — 2 Years Later, Grey Squirrels Face the Unthinkable
Basically, grey squirrels aren't native to the land and they outcompete the native red squirrels. Fortunately, pine martens eat the the grey squirrels and leave the red ones alone. Yay.
Between 2019 and 2021, a team from the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust trapped 35 wild pine martens in the Scottish Highlands, fitted each one with a radio collar, drove them 600 miles south, and released them into the Forest of Dean, an ancient woodland on the English-Welsh border that had not seen a pine marten in over 160 years. The animals were elusive, nocturnal, and roughly the size of a house cat. Most people in the surrounding communities never saw one. But something in the forest started changing almost immediately.
