I'm forever grateful for the tour guide at Monticello who brought this up during our visit. "Here in this room, Jefferson and James Madison had dinner and discussed American independence and the rights of men to be free while slaves served their meal and cleaned the table."

Later in the tour he brought up Sally Hemmings and her children, and their descendants' fight to be recognized as related to Jefferson. "I realize that may make some people uncomfortable, but if you wanted comfortable, you should have spent the day at Busch Gardens instead."
