a fun little announcement !

today (august 14, 2026) is the day of the mario awards hosted by mariowiki. as i did last year, i will be presenting another award (in the format of a ~5 min youtube video). my category, favourite non-bowser boss, is part of the final presentation block. i had a lot of fun making this one & im super excited for everyone to see it!! itll go live on the mario boards awards section this evening at 8:15 pm (eastern time), with the plan being to post it to my channel (& cross-post here) once the ceremony is over. if you wanna be among the first to see it, hop into the awards thread tonight! the ceremony itself will start at 4 pm: see the full presentation schedule here & general info here. consider watching the full thing, a couple of my mutuals are also presenting!

whose definition of "graphic violence and torture" ? do we think maybe those conceptual boundaries depend on factors like the speaker's prior ideological commitments? have we ever read a censorship policy?

at what age does a child cross from innocent pre-exposed object to sullied brain adult? what is the normal age to experience or witness violence? where does that leave those who experience and witness violence at younger ages? who may never have lived a 'violence-free' existence?

do we actually think that children are ontologically incapable of being interested in violence, or are we merely so threatened by the idea they could be that we refuse to even speak the possibility?

is it the worst thing in the world to pick up a book and then decide its subject matter is unappealing, frightening, or overwhelming? is that such a foreign fucking concept? did anything scary ever happen to you as an 8 year old? did it have an instant off-switch as effective as 'close the cover and pick up something else'?

what kind of violence? is all violence the same? do all depictions of violence have the same literary merit, political meaning, or emotional effect?

the order of the stick is a really good comic that is. extremely difficult to recommend to people

hey i think you would really enjoy this series it's. a text-heavy stick figure comic about dungeons & dragons. i swear it's super compelling & has really strong character writing, you just have to get through 100+ pages of pretty dry gag-a-day observational humour about d&d 3.5e before the plot takes off. just be warned, there's a lot of off-colour humour early on, including one particularly tasteless joke that happens in the first like 20 pages. but the author apologized for it ten years later & he's better about that stuff now i promise. also there's prequel books that have important plot stuff, and you just sorta have to know when to read them. also it's been going for over 20 years

re: paper mario — do you have any opinions on bug fables?

i played bug fables for the first time last year & really enjoyed it! it takes a while to get moving but once it does it's charming & mechanically engaging. i have more granular (& contemporary) takes on my blog in "#bftes liveblog" (although i never got around to updating again after i beat the game lol)

the "language is a social construct, therefore linguistic misinformation is impossible. any claim about language is true if enough people say it is" misconception is of course annoying when applied to stuff like grammar because it's wrong in a nuanced way that's important to explain correctly to avoid spreading even worse ideas about language. but with etymology it's like. no that's not even the part of language that's a social construct, you're making a claim about history. this is something that you really shouldn't think you can just make up

btw one of the main tells for false etymology posts online is that they often are presented as something the poster "realized", as opposed to "learned". as though historical facts about how language has evolved are things that you can figure out on your own by thinking about words hard enough

Someone asked me a while ago if I still had a photo of the worst sink I had ever seen while apartment hunting in Los Angeles. I assumed I deleted it so I didn't answer the ask and now it's gone, but as it turns out, yes, I do still have a photo of it.
