The sunset was gorgeous, painting the carnival below in pinkish-golden light, streaks of multicolored clouds more mesmerizing than the flashing lights of the various rides and games. Tantalizing smells wafted through the air, and screams of delight and laughter pulsed in time with the whirr of mechanics.
It wasn’t fair.
It should be gray, washed-out, raining, thundering, miserable, and he shouldn’t be here, stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel, least of all with her.
He watched helplessly as his team gathered below. He wanted to scream at them, to wave his arms and tell them to run, that this was a trap, but she squeezed his hand, a gentle reminder of what she would do to him if he compromised the operation. He was there to watch, to bear witness as the people he cared about most were surrounded by the police, tackled and handcuffed. He hadn’t seen them in so long, and it killed him inside that their “reunion” was their capture and not his rescue.
One of them looked up, searching for him, the one who’d allegedly called them there, but before he could meet their eyes, she grabbed his face and forced him into a kiss. He hated the feeling of it, hated the way she always forced herself on him, even though she was supposed to be good, supposed to be a hero, but there was nothing he could do. He was just her trophy, stripped of everything that made him who he once was. He screwed his eyes shut, but it was too late.
A single drop of rain fell to the ground.
