interesting how, in the realm of fiction, there are some morally reprehensible behaviors that are "acceptable" for someone's character to have, and some that wait a minute post canceled. My cat who doesn't like cuddles just settled directly into my lap for the first time in the 10 years I've known her
This is all that matters now
She did it again. Discourse is cancelled forever
I keep trying to explain warframe stuff to my technically-baby tenno but I keep forgetting that this game is nonsensical so every plot point or piece of trivia sounds like I pulled it straight out of my ass
I have a mute character in the story I’m writing and one of my beta readers suggested I use italics when they sign so that I don’t have to keep peppering “they signed” or “their hands flashed” throughout the piece.
But like…I always read italics in a different tone like they’re thoughts. It seems quieter than using normal quotations which makes what they say look less significant on the page than other character’s dialogue.
I really don’t think my audience needs me to use completely different punctuation around a mute character. There’s no need to act like they’re speaking a different language since their muteness isn’t a focal point in the story.
So really this reader’s comment has done the complete opposite of what they intended. Now I’m actively taking out as many of my “hands flashed” notations as possible and just writing in normal body language because, clearly, the other characters understand them and my audience doesn’t need to be coddled.
As an HOH reader and writer I can affirm that once the signing has been established it can just be treated like “said”.
You can add little things for emphasis though, like how fast or flippant a sign is given, also a lot of our “punctuation” is in facial expressions, so wild looks is kind of normal. Also messing up signs and just.. pushing them aside. Like, you mess up a fingerspell and just take both hands and shove the air in front of you to your side, people who sign eventually end up doing this for other things, like a “forget it” motion. It’s like a “wave it off” gesture.
Body language for someone who signs is a lot more animated than someone who speaks, as we use our upper body a lot in our conversations, so the act of “signing” is more than just hand signals.
Yes….yes GOOD this is the good stuff right here. I’m going to incorporate some of these ASAP ESPECIALLY the pushing the air but to clear it of your mistakes
dragon age should have had fishing minigames
dragon age origins fishing minigame is a cute little one-time interaction with a fisherman at lake calenhad where if you have enough cunning u can catch some kind of fucked up lake monster which comes with a little codex entry elaborating on the rumours about lake calenhad & the circle tower
dragon age 2 fishing minigame is non-existent they just make a joke about how gross kirkwall harbour fish would be to cover up that they didn’t have time to make it. in the files there’s some crazy list of creatures you would have fished out of there and some cut codex entries you would have found with super relevant gallows lore that is now just not in the game and people discourse about whether it’s canon
dragon age inquisition fishing minigame was created when the devs took people's complaints about no fishing minigame in da2 way too seriously and battled with the game engine to make an extremely awkward, unrewarding, and time-consuming system available in like almost every map. people still do it because sitting there and fishing for half an hour is one of the only reliable ways to trigger party banter. some of the mosaics can only be found by fishing
dragon age the veilguard fishing minigame also never made it into the game, despite the fact that the concept art book has like a kind of bizarre amount of work on what all the fish would look like, because the mechanics were planned for when the home base was a submarine and then became unusable. some of the concept fish became in-game models which serve exclusively to provide jokes about cooking

I thought I needed a new laptop but nope, youtube is slowing down your PC if you have adblock on on any open tab...
To be very clear about this: CPUs aren't magical devices that can operate forever. They generate heat. They wear out over time. This happens faster when they're operating near capacity. This is not just an attempt to inconvenience you; this is an attempt to damage your property.
For the "crime" of not wanting to be tracked/have ads pissed into your eyeballs 24/7.
Even if you've paid for the "privilege" of the latter.
Fuck Google, and I hope they get sued into oblivion over this.
i see everyone in the notes talking about newpipe but nobody's talking about youtube alternatives for desktop
IF YOU USE A DESKTOP PC OR LAPTOP, TRY INVIDIOUS
https://invidious.io/
it is a free, open-source alternative YouTube front-end. in addition to not having ads, it has other great QoL features like a download button. try one of the several instances on that link up there ^^^^
so i was super pissed and concerned about this but i have just discovered that while this is true, it is apparently only true for google chrome users. i just tested this by having ten tabs open in firefox playing ten different youtube videos at the same time and my cpu usage spiked to 25% as the videos were loading and then dropped back down to 10% as they played.
if you ever needed another reason to switch to a different browser, this is it.

I think the more grimdark and edgy you try to make your setting the more racist it will be. And I think it's an inevitable consequence of trying to make whole societies (cultures, civilizations, species, races) villains. The more you want to make "this culture is EVIL and everybody who lives them is EVIL and lives for WAR and CONQUEST and TORTURE"...
...you have to wonder, hey, if this civilization is so evil and only thinks about war and torture and kicking puppies, then where they get their food from? who builds their cities, or if they're (racist) savage nomads, their tools and who trains their animals? who raises their children and how? who keeps cultural practices of "being evil" alive? why hasn't their culture of backstabbing and rule of the strongest collapsed a thousand times already?
Basically, if you have beings that have a physical, natural existence, they need to eat, they need to have shelter, and to raise the next generation. And yes, even raising them communally or in hatcheries or whatever counts. You cannot have a whole civilization dedicated to being evil or even to war; for every soldier, there is someone carrying his supplies and making his weapons and a family at home. If we're talking about spiritual beings of pure evil, literal demons that don't need to eat or sleep or reproduce, that's another thing. But if we are talking about beings that live in the world, that are part of the physical world no matter whatever fantasy features or traits they have, that have societies and culture, then you have to wonder; where the food comes from, who raises the children, who makes the weapons, who trains the warriors yes but who trains the farmers, the toolmakers, who teaches the children to speak, who tells the stories.
This was the same problem that haunted Tolkien about his Orcs by the way, and you won't escape it if you think about it for more than 10 seconds. And you shouldn't escape it. Do you have a nation, culture, race, species, as "villains" in your world? Think about it. Think about it for more than 10 seconds.
i need everyone to get into college football right now i am dying to talk about the texas tech situation. this is the kind of thing that will be referenced for the next 100 years. there will be documentaries and biopics about this.
no one asked but here
texas tech's quartback, brendan sorsby, was investigated for sports gambling. i know sports betting is all the rage right now, but athletes themselves are not allowed to do it. it is Rule Number 1 and it is the highest priority rule for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), who governs all athletic programs at about 1,100 colleges in the US.
the invesitagetion of sorsby revealed that, not only did he place more than 9,000 sports bets when he himself was a collegiate athlete, but 40 of those bets were AGAINST HIS OWN TEAM when he was playing at indiana university. immediately, this threatens the integrity of the sport, and especially because indiana is the hottest team right now as the defending national champion.
the NCAA, which is largely a sham organization these days (they've truly lost their grasp and college athletics are the wild west now) actually enforced their Number 1 Rule and told sorsby his career is over, that he would never play college football again (and, subsequently, that he would never get drafted into the NFL because his college career was cut short).
well, because the NCAA is a husk of its former self, sorsby and texad tech immediately took this to court. MANY athletes have learned these past few seasons that if you can find a judge who's a fan of your team, you can get any NCAA ruling overturned. that's exactly what texas tech did. they filed a suit in Lubbock, where the university is located and where every judge is an alum of texas tech. so sorsby was granted an injunction and will now only be suspended for the first 2 games od the 2026 season (which are alwayd against no-name teams that will be destroyed regardless of who's suspended).
every other school in the country immediately went on the defensive because this is a very clear integretiy issue. so nebraska and georgia (sic em dawgs) released statements saying that all currently-scheduled competitions witb Texas Tech in ANY sport will be canceled and there will be no future schedulings. at least 3 of the major conferences (SEC, Big 10, Big 12) , who account for almost all division 1 sports teams in the country, are also in discussions about cancelling comtests. Texas Tech is part of the Big 12, and there is serious talk of all other teams in the conference shutting texas tech out.
now would probably be time where i say that texas tech is one of the wealthiest programs in college football becaise there is a single billionaire alumnus pouring money into the program with hopes of essentially buying a championship. so texas techs integrity has always been questionable. anyway, the university president put oit a statement that he doesnt care that sorseby violated regulation and that texas tech will sue any school that refuses to play them because it jeopardizes their championship prospects if they're umable to play any games.
this is all just startomg but its so juicy and delicious. the NCAA is going to crumble to dust if they cannot get this injunction overturned. schools like georgia and nebraska have plenty of money so a suit isnt necessarily a concern, but this will absolutely change college football forever. i cant stop reading about it.
update on this: texas tech is claiming that every school who has/is considering cancelling all contests is "afraid" that texas tech is better than them. what's funny about this is that sorsby's stats are average. he is not good enough for this kind of protection. many schools who have already cancelled or are considering it have much better quarterbacks than sorsby. also, texas tech's head coach had said that it's actually ok that sorsby bet against his own team because it "its not murder or assault."
the attorney general of texas has threatened to investigate the Big 12 conference if they sanction Texas Tech
the claim is now that texas texh university just cares so much about brendan sorsbys mental health that they have to sue everyone who calls this an integrity violation. any other school who wouldnt defend an athlete that committed this violation "doesnt care about mental health"

I refuse to reblog callout posts because I'm a prison abolitionist
In all my years in this website, and I've been here a long time, I can't recall a single instance of a callout post leading to actual restitution for the victims of the alleged harm the person was accused of. Even in cases where the accusations were true. Even in cases where there was legitimate harm done to another person.
Remember the sixpencee child slave thing? What happened there, exactly? Was the kid freed? No? They were just run off the website? OK so what good exactly did that do?
Remember the bone stealing witch? What exactly did that witchhunt accomplish? The person got arrested, oh that's great, the american justice system surely rectified the situation
And again, those are instances where the accusations were true and involved real substantive harm to another person. We used to joke on here how callout posts were shit like "receipts below: [several paragraphs of petty fandom drama] [three paragraphs of petty interpersonal drama involving cheating on partners or stealing food out of the fridge or something] [fabricated evidence that the person is responsible for the murder of JonBenét Ramsey]"
And that was back in the 2010s. The meta has changed. Callouts used to be a tool people used to point out actual harm a person had done, rarely, and more commonly were used as a means of bullying somebody over petty drama. Nowadays they're used to manufacture outrage and harassment against marginalized populations. They are a weapon bigots use to turn us against each other. A few manufactured accusations here, some out of context or clipped screenshots there, and people who should be standing in solidarity with each other against white supremacy, patriarchy, cisheteronormativity, are instead devouring each other.
It's sinister as shit, dude, and people will still share these accusations without a second thought. So, why? What is the point? What's the best case scenario here? Raising "awareness?" what the fuck is that supposed to accomplish? Will we get the oh-so-trustworthy authorities involved? Are we hoping for an arrest? A conviction? Throwing a queer or poc person in prison so they can be abused and assaulted and humiliated behind bars? Is that who we are?
Callouts and the like don't serve any real good in the world. At a macro scale they divide us when we should be standing together, and at a micro scale they result in deeply traumatic never-ending harassment and threats and doxxing and worse to a person who almost definitely does not deserve it. And again, for what? A sense of "justice?" this is not justice. This is retribution. It is punishment.
It's fucking cop behavior, and I'm not gonna participate in it.

it’s funny bc I think I have a lot to learn, with blindspots that I’m still trying to fill in by reading more and talking to people etc, but when I’m hanging around certain family members I suddenly become The Wokest Person Alive just by merit of having made some attempt to not be shitty. and this isn’t level 3 discourse like “conflating submissiveness with a preference for bottoming is misogynistic”, it’s basic shit like “no, health is not a state of mind, and sick people are sick for reasons beyond bad attitude,” and “no, you should not loudly talk about how shocked you were that a Nigerian man was at grandma’s funeral,” and “please don’t say that about Jewish people,” and so on.
and usually they are willing to listen when I talk about this stuff, so there is a benefit to me being there, but holy crap is it a tonal shift going from online to real life.
'minion' -too closely associated with those yellow things
'goon' -linguistic drift gave her a new meaning. i hope her new life is good for her. i miss her.
'henchman' -too gendered. can be shortened to 'hench' in a pinch, but lacks punch.
'servant' -too domestic to apply to all those who serve evil.
'underling, subordinate' -this one only works if they get off on being beneath you and/or you don't properly pay your workers.
'associate' -this one's good for grizzled mercenaries or lone agents but doesn't work good for broad swathes of an organization.
'slave' -same as underling but more intense. really fun for some of the group. unsavory for others in a way that limits the scope of the thing.
'thrall' -only really applies if you're brainwashing them and that's not something i've learned how to do en masse yet
'flunky, toady, stooge, lackey' -these are just insulting, and that isn't conducive to a healthy work environment. imagine going to work and your job title is 'stooge'.
'acolyte' -works for those that worship you, but again. lacks the scope.
'supporter, follower' -unspecific and vague
'assistant, helper, aide' -not sinister at all. just means you're doing things for me. swagless in this manner. could be good if used to describe someone who's so clearly more that as a way to emphasize their obedience via understatement, but that's only useful for a few members of the organization. and even then, 'associate' works better.
'cohort' -untested in the field. suggests an equal footing in the affair, ideal for post-structuralist evil organizations with a bottom-up power structure that's held in the hands of the evil workers themselves. perhaps we'll explore it together?
may I suggest: 'grunt' – time-tested by crime bosses with a variety of goals and organizational mandates. implies a subservient position with none of the innate baggage of lackey et al.
GRUNT IS PRETTY GOOD
