The Racist Fandom Starter Pack
A canon interracial couple exists "I just don't see their chemistry" proceeds to fanon ship [insert white character] instead, claiming they have more of a connection.
"It's not their skin color, I just don't like them for some reason, btw, here are my top 5 [insert white actors] I think are better suited"
"Not everything is about race". They say, as they prop up every white character over any character of color.
"Please stop bring race drama into the fandom". Which translates to, I'm comfortable in my racism and don't appreciate any criticism, thanks!
White person, "Yeah, I wrote character of color as an animal, doesn't make me racist".
"I love character of color, here's a fic where they act like as [insert white characters] servant/therapist".
Character of color is such a bad friend for having opinions of their own/taking care of themselves instead of putting their friend [insert white character] first.
A character of color is morally ambiguous or a villain, gets redemption arc. "They're awful and haven't been condemned enough of their crimes". Stans [insert white characters] who did the exact same crimes or was a villain who's redemption arc is praised.
"Can't believe that character of color had the nerve not to die as a selfless sacrifice for [insert white character]".
"POC actress/actor is too ethnic and they'd ruin the character".
"I haven't seen racism in the fandom therefore it isn't there".
"Character of color is the main character of the show sure, but let's be honest, everyone came for [insert white character]
"Character of color is alright but I can only relate to [insert white character]".
Feel free to add more, that you've come across. Sadly, it all runs together after awhile of being in a lot of fandoms. Special shout out to all who helped me with these comments!
"making character Black is inaccurate/offensive! I'm not racist, it's just facts!"
Itās finally happened.
After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.
āI like your shoelaces.ā
Oh. Oh no.
I responded the only way I could. āThanks.ā And then I reluctantly added, āI stole them from the presidentā¦and if that makes sense to you, Iām very sorry.ā
The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, āI havenāt thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.ā
Yeah. Me neither. Not until today.
Tumblr rite of passage. Achievement unlocked.

Iāve seen people do auās of Bloody Mary where Graceās twin brother is Colt Seavers from the fall guy which I honestly love but I havenāt seen anyone do what I consider to be the funniest option available which is make Ryland Grace an escaped Ken from Barbieland.
Think about it throughout PHM Ryland never talks about having a family he mentions having a girlfriend once in the book all we really know about her is that they moved in together briefly and that she had a lot of stuff.
Letās say after Ken and Barbie break up. Ken decides to go out on his own and stumbles upon the real world. There he learns about science and becomes completely invested in that pathway. He either eventually figures out how to become a human or he stays a doll which could explain why he was the only one to survive his hyper sleep (and so he can live with rocky longer)
It could explain why he so heavily believes in non water based life so much because he WAS a non water based life form. Water doesnāt exist in Barbieland itās all plastic.
Furthermore this could explain why he decided to become a teacher being a doll previously itās only reasonable to assume heād enjoy kidās presence the same way Barbie does.
He also loves the beach and we all know that Kenās previous job was beach
In the Barbie movie the CEO of Mattel states āweāre not worried about Kenā¦. Ever.ā Meaning that itās likely they wouldnāt care at all if a Ken left Barbieland and perused an education became a scientist and eventually a school teacher.
All this to say imagine Simon and Grace getting into some kind of fight where Simon is like
āYou have no idea what itās like to live your life forced to be a cog in the system. Knowing that what you want doesnāt matter, nobody caring about who you are not even your name mattersāetc. etc.
and the entire time Grace is having PTSD flashbacks of this:
And then responds with:
āYou wouldnāt last an hour in the place I grew upā
This inspired me. I took a crack idea wayyyy too seriously
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
it's funny how all the movies from the '70s and '80s (and even some from the '90s!) just assumed that smog would get worse and worse until the earth (or at least LA) was perpetually shrouded in smoke, then the government banned smog and it went away; incredible really.
Acid rain went from being a pollution disaster to an environmental success story. How did scientists manage to prove that acid rain existed,
similarly "acid rain" was a genuinely devastating problem that was solved, eventually, by banning it! turns out you can just do things.
The Kids just aren't being taught how to write a cv or cover letter huh
I've seen ones today including photos, dates of birth, place of birth even!
And also several formatted like they were writing a message to a friend! Full of exclamation marks! This is a formal document!
this one is formatted like a powerpoint presentation. to be clear I'm not in charge of any descision making I'm just going through redacting identifying/potentially biasing info but like...some of these formatting decisions are also potentially biasing
Yeah, I remember getting some wild ones when I was hiring manager
So many women feel the need to mention their young children in their cover letters and CVs. Some young people slip in that they can't drive, a sort of pre-emptive "but it's okay I have a bus pass". So many people go and shove their mental health issues with anxiety and depression in there.
I remember one girl had clearly been told that she needed to explain any gaps in employment in the cover letter (terrible blanket advice), and so had described how she had developed depression after a traumatic miscarriage and spent a year in a terrible spiral getting worse and worse before getting on a new medication that, and I quote, "seemed to be finally starting to work." There are ways she could have written that information if she was desperately wanting to include it (I cannot stress enough that she should not have included a word of it), but the way it was written was almost literally a description of how she would be a horrendously unreliable employee who could dip out at a moment's notice and would never be seen again, while also demonstrating that she cannot determine appropriate professional communication.
(And for the record, the latter is the actual issue. I have no problems at all hiring employees with mental health issues, and did several times hire people in recovery to help them get back on their feet. Only once did that not work out; all others were amazing, and two became some of our best employees - one is now a manager there, in fact. But if an employee can't be trusted not to over share personal information with customers or colleagues, particularly triggering topics... That's a different issue. She did herself no favours at all there, and nor did whoever told her employers will always need employment gaps explaining in a cover letter).
Another guy once wrote in his cover letter "I want this job because after years of messing about I now have a little girl, so I need to sort my life out for her, and if I can't do it even for her then more fool me." Which, like, I admire the drive and passion. But again. Why are you telling an employer that you're a flight risk. Why are you telling us this.
One 18 year old volunteered, unforced, that he was gay. Just right in the cover letter. That he sent to a future employer.
And then, of course, the thousands that send in CVs and cover letters that are horrendously mis-spelled. Again, as an employer, I care dick-all if you're dyslexic or what have you; but I do care that you didn't think it was important to get someone to proofread a professional document for you before submission. That tells me quite a big thing about the level of professionalism I can expect from you in the role. It wasn't massively relevant for the job I was hiring for (escape room game master), but if we'd had slightly different job duties (e.g. writing official soc med posts), that would be the difference between getting an interview or not.
Honestly, half of my role as a hiring manager was just... having to explain to the other hiring manager that she was being biased based on information neither of us should have had in the first place. And she wasn't a bad person, but bias gets you even if you don't want it to. Give yourself the best chance. Don't fuck it by sending in a dumbass cover letter.
Linking @bitchesgetriches great advice on cover letter writing here...

what am I gonna do? play de getarr?
see i only [unintelligible] MESH NIGHTĀ
no I lovie
its always the tiny gay cowboy and his tiny gay roman boyfriend, never the bi cowboy and his bi cowboy/martial artist boyfriend. owen wilson didnāt play a fruity western boy TWICE to be disrespected like thatĀ
no bc Iām being serious! weāve been way too quiet about them for way too long!!!!!!
pls watch these (shanghai noon and shanghai knights) and give these romantic besties ur love! itās literally a western romcom
valid valid valid valid
The craziest thing is that itās also a borderline remake of The Frisco Kid, where Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford are a Polish rabbi and an outlaw with a heart of gold, respectively, who are also very much in love.
Shanghai Noon is like 75% plot beats from The Frisco Kid. And then the other 25% is Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson doing what they do best. No higher praise if youāre looking for a fun silly movie.
The Steven Universe fandom might be ācringeā and ābadā but imagine a fandom so bad that a bunch of fandom members had ran a scheme to say āif you pay us money, your blorbo will know youāre validā and the fandom permanently split over a 95 paragraph callout post of these people.
I cant do the story justice myself. Google āThe Protestant Reformationā for more details, I hear a few people have done deep dives
The first time I watched Knives Out, I was in nursing school & wondered what Iād think about it when I was a nurse. Now Iām five years into my nursing career, plus with plenty of time in the home health speciality like Marta, and watched the movie again a few nights ago. My overall feelings about the nursing are actually about the same: I could quibble about details but overall the vibe feels right. She feels emotionally authentic. She feels like a nurse. She should have maybe done a respiratory assessment. But also that old man was absolutely so hyped to concoct a mystery. Absolutely jazzed to slit his own throat. Not a good partner in his own care. Patient who definitely wouldnāt use the call light appropriately.
And god can you imagine dealing with his family
You know that hospitalist note starts with something painfully diplomatic that just screams you will be walking into a war zone. āHarlan is an energetic and pleasant 85 year old gentleman with very engaged family support network actively involved in careā
Okay I don't know if there's a correct place to go looking for resources about. Any of this. But Tumblr is as good a place to ask as any for something both specific and very very broad.
I'm really interested in learning more about specifically north american indigenous textiles and textile production because so many resources discussing textile production and textile history completely disregard north america, but I have no idea where to even begin. I'll go haunt my college library and the city's central library at some point soon, but i'm wondering if anyone knows any interesting resources on native textiles, especially those written by native people, off the top of their heads?
I keep seeing fascinating things being mentioned in passing (Textiles: The Whole story... You're a wonderful book but what do you MEAN you don't even have any photos of the garments you mentioned with the porcupine quills used for emboridery and beadwork that you do not cite a direct source for and DOES NOT APPEAR ONLINE under any search terms) and I am looking for a jumping off point.
Book recommendations for Coast Salish textiles:
Salish Blankets: Robes of Protection and Transformation, Symbols of Wealth; by Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard Joseph
The Teachings of Mutton; by Alison Ariss, Andrea Fritz, Chepximiya Siyam Chief Dr. Janice George, Danielle Morsette, Debra Qwasen Sparrow, Eliot White-Hill Kwulasultun, Jared Qwustenuxun Williams, Kerrie Charnley, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa, Michael Pavel, saꬷamitÄa Susan Pavel, Senaqwila Wyss, Snumithiaā Violet Elliott, Tuwuxwulāt-hw Tyrone Elliott, Xweliqwiya Rena Point Bolton
If you can find it, the digital book: Coast Salish Weaving by Chepximiya Siyam (Chief Janice George) and Leslie Tepper is supposed to be amazing.

i dont WANT pride months to be over,
on the other hand...
Very maddening when absolutely any kind of advice or personal experience about overcoming mental health adversity is met with "gee thanks, I'm cured"
Have you considered that people who worked to manage their depression and anxiety were not curing themselves, and are maybe even aware that they can't, but are instead engaging in harm reduction? Like yes the world still sucks and I'm still sick but idk maybe it's worth it to suffer marginally less? And maybe the process is doing that is gonna be hard and it's gonna suck and it may not even work but I gotta do something?
No one is making you do anything but a total resistance to even attempting to marginally improve your circumstances - an outright rejection of those attempts as somehow foolish or even offensive - treating these things people do to help themselves as an insult - is just heightening your own misery on purpose. It is, in fact, self harm.
