at the risk of sounding confucian, if my special interest was cultivation and i really wanted to go monk it up, but i was the crown prince of a country, and the layout of the royal family was such that if something were to hypothetically happen to me, for instance if i cultivated to immortality and ascended, the only person who could reasonably inherit the throne without causing a mondo succession crisis was my extremely mentally ill cousin. and again i do not want to sound too confucian here but i do think that in that situation i would say ah nuts! monking it up sure would have been neat but what else is my next life for. and i would not monk it up, to avoid kicking the knees out from under my country to the best of my ability

one of my favorite things in Master & Commander the book is there's a side character with a blatant huge gay crush on Jack and everyone else is like "does he know... he has to know... there's no way he doesn't know..." and then you get Jack's POV and it's extremely clear that this man is a remarkably smart dog who was bred to understand the world strictly in terms of Ships (fantastic) and Not Ships (?)
