forgor to mention this earlier also but woughhhh the stuff bujold can do with barrayaranized mythological references and like invented historical tidbits is so good. it fleshes out the sense of it being a real culture the characters are (of course) deeply steeped in but especially how their prejudices are threaded throughout all of it and sometimes that's explicitly noted on the character's end and sometimes it's not and augh!!!!!

genderswap aus do not normally compel me that much but i will say i have been mulling over how one would try to translate girl!miles vorkosigan like... since i read cetaganda. so much of his character is tied up in ideas of masculinity and male chivalry i think it would be difficult but i believe in her yk? no reason why a girl can't violate vorloupulous's law i mean start a normal legal mercenary fleet at seventeen
