Itās fine to want nothing to do with Harry Potter now that JKR is being regularly and publicly terrible (Iām listing that way myself even though I donāt want to because the association is just overpoweringly distasteful), but seeing the shift in how people discuss HP on this website to be like, āIt seems obvious to me that this franchise was always poorly constructed, derivative drek littered with red flags anybody would notice with a cursory glance - thereās absolutely nothing genuinely appealing about it.ā ā¦Thatās just very funny, sorry. Like yes that is unfortunately not how the relationship between a personās moral character and their skills works, but mostly I was alive and had a developed consciousness between 2000 and 2008, so I cannot take this seriously. It wasnāt the biggest literature phenomenon of recent times because it had a uniquely strong marketing strategy, guys.
The books are well written with engaging characters, great worldbuilding, and a story that captured people like no other. There is literally no overestimating the phenom the books were. And no the movies did not make it. They were MASSIVE even before the films. Before the films even came out, the NYT made a separate childrenās bestseller list because a ton of people complained that ākidās booksā were taking up too many sports on the NYT bestsellers lists. Itās honestly ridiculous to argue that HPās popularity was made by the movies. Come on.
And the thing about red flags, is that most things that are legitimately problematic in the books are fantasy staples. JKR didnāt invent the anti-semitic portrayal of goblins. Itās an old as hell trope thatās in countless fantasy stories. The house elves were based on Brownie folklore, even down to the tradition of their freedom coming from a piece of clothing being given to them. People were not talking a lot about the casual transphobia in doing things like describing Rita Skeeterās hands as āmannishā because casual transphobia was so ubiquitous that it was the norm, and that transphobia was often actively violent. I just donāt think it crossed many peopleās minds that āwow JKR described Rita Skeeterās hands as mannish once in the year 2000, so I think sheās probably a T*RF.ā And this doesnāt make it okay, and it doesnāt mean these aspects of the books arenāt problematic! But it does mean that like, no it wasnāt āso obviousā even to MANY progressive minded people. And I also donāt think it makes her a terrible person. What makes her a terrible person is what sheās doing NOW.
The idea that theyāve āalways been awfulā and we āshould have knownā is really and actually just⦠kind of cowardly? Instead of acknowledging that unfortunately yes, bad people can make good things, people are taking the easy way out and going āwell obviously a bad person makes bad art. itās ALWAYS been bad, and my brain is so huge I know thisā, because god forbid we have a more nuanced view and donāt see the world in the most simplistic terms possible. It sucks when bad people make good art, but youāre not special for not ever liking Harry Potter.
also likeā¦. as a trans person who adored harry potterābecause god what little baby queer DOESNāT daydream about escaping their terrible mundane home life for a world where they can have friends and adventuresāthese takes are really frustrating. like why are you calling ME stupid because SHE betrayed a whole swathe of her fanbase. like youāre really using the heartbreak and hurt of thousands of trans hp fans as an opportunity for internet clout? you must really care about trans people
JKRās big problem as both a creator and a person since HP wasnāt that her fantasy series from the late 90s had problematic elements, itās that she apparently had refused to take criticism and grow. Whatās been wild about JKR is we have had first row seats to her going further and further into this mindset where she is a brilliant progressive writer against bigotry who wrote an insanely popular series so any criticism on her is an attack.
Yeah her later works are jumbled messes that continue the worst bits of HP (creative world building that wants to seem grounded but ends up unravelling if you look at it too much which got worse when she got more āadultā with it, going further into a Good/Bad dichotomy and appearing to go back and make her morally grey characters LESS nuanced, plots that got overly convoluted and a refusal to expand her world without falling into the āall the important characters know each otherā chasm ect ect) but she is, really, the ultimate example to me of what happens when you refuse to listen to criticism to grow and adjust your ideas as you learn. Itās obvious in her weird spiral with the HP universe that she refused to let go of and with her own stances on āsocial justice.ā
JKR could easily be a lot of people on Tumblr and twitter! She had some progressive ideas for her time but got too caught up in the IMAGE of someone who hates bigotry and is so thoughtful and I really think she fully believes that she is a social justice progressive advocate because she talks politely and softly and says nice things. Sheās a cautionary tale if anything about buying too much into your own hype whether that is as a creator or as a social justice advocate.
This need for y'all to go āthis person is bad now or did a bad thing and so was always and will always be badā is UHHHH tied to ātherefore as a Good Person who is on the Good Side I would not do something badā which is exactly what leads to people going down the hole JKR did.
Apparently my director went to see a production of West Side Story a few years ago, and the guy playing Chino forgot his gun before coming out for his final scene. Once it got to the big scene where he is supposed to shoot Tony, he screeched āPoison Bootsā and kicked the actor playing Tony until he went down. The girl playing Maria then had to jerk the shoe off of Chinoās foot, and had to do the gunshot scene asking āHow many kicks Chino? How many kicks, and one kick left for meā.Ā
There should be a blog dedicated to theatrical urban legends. Like that opening weekend of Dracula where Dracula (still hungover) vomited all over the audience during the first stage direction that everyone has a friend of a friend that worked on the show and was there.
or the one where the bridge never came out for Javertās suicide and so he just pretended to stab himself and then lay there until the lights went out
best story i heard was when a friend of mine saw a show where juliet forgot to bring the dagger out on stage so she just ripped the squib out of her chest and blood squirted everywhere
During a passion play a friend of my brother was supposedly in, one of the roman soldiers who was supposed to stab jesus on the cross and accidentally grabbed the wrong spear- he was supposed to grab one with a fake tip, but instead he grabbed one with an actual metal tip and, well
Jesus screamedĀ āJESUS CHRIST YOU STABBED MEā.
Since that Jesus had to be taken down due to a bad case of stab-itis, the backup Jesus came in, but he weighed significantly less than the original Jesus- which would have been fine, except that at the end the cross was supposed to ascend upwards with Jesus on it, and the weights hadnāt been adjusted.
So Jesus, instead, ROCKETED UP into heaven (or, just, above the stage).
This is wild from start to finish
I was in Peter Pan once and one night at a performance, the adhesive holding our Hookās mustache on was wearing off. It was near the end with a big fight scene and when he got attacked, he let his mustache fall and went āYOU RIPPED MY MUSTACHE OFF!ā in a scandalized tone and it added a new note of hilarity to the whole scene (which was supposed to be funny anyway)
In my seventh grade play, which was a midsummer nightās dream, Thisbe didnāt have a sword so she stabbed herself with a coathanger
My junior year we were doing Romeo and Juliet and after Juliet poisons herself it was supposed to go dark and sheād get off the stage. well the light crew accidentally turned them back on and Juliet who was sitting up slammed back down on the wooden bed with a loud bang. To which my theater teacher says into the com āzombie Julietā and everyone who heard that had to keep as quiet as possible while our eyes were filling with tears.
i attended my countyās performing arts high school majoring in vocal studies, (mostly geared towards musical theater and opera styles) and once a year we got a field trip to new york (we were in jersey, so itās not exactly far). we would do one touristy thing, an actorās workshop with friends of our teachers working in various performing industries in nyc, and then see a show.Ā
my first year doing this, our industry contacts were 1 actor, 1 casting director, and 1 producer to get different aspects of the business, and they all gave us amazing advice and told fantastic stories. the actor in question was Zazu on Broadwayās The Lion King for several years, and told the best story by far.
in The Lion King, there are only two pieces of pre-recorded noise in the whole show. one, when Pumbaa does a MASSIVE fart while fighting the hyenas, and the other being Mufasa saying REMEMBERRRRRR as Simba climbs Pride Rock. the actor told us while struggling not to laugh that, during one nightās performance, someone forgot to flip the tape of these pre-recorded noises.
so, at the end of the show, the great climax where Simba finally accepts his place in the Circle of Life, the heavens parted and-
PFFFFFFFFFRRRRRBTFTBTBFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
everyone froze. and then all ran off stage positively HOWLING with laughter.
the lesson: sometimes there are fuck ups you just canāt recover from.
During a high school production of Beauty and the Beast, where I was assistant costumer and assistant prop master, our director decided that we needed to spice up Gastonās introduction. You know: in the movie, when Lefou runs in trying to catch the duck/goose that Gaston has just shot out of the sky?
Originally, the actors were going to stroll on stage with our Lefou hauling in the really neat (and real!) taxidermied deer head that we had found in a local thrift store. Now, two days before opening night, our director wants Lefou to run in from off stage and catch a stuffed duck that Gaston has just shot. This, of course, requires two things to work properly as a scene: a gunshot noise, and a stuffed duck.
The gunshot noise, we had covered. Blue-collar, redneck school? Guns a plenty to record. The stuffed duck? Harder than you might have thought to obtain.
Three hunting stores, two taxidermists, and one Pet Supply Store ā¢, Iād finally found a semi-realistic pheasant squeaky toy. What follows is an account of the ways this dog toy managed to be the nightmare prop of the six show run.
Opening Night: The stagehand, who was supposed to drop the bird from the ceiling catwalk, missed his cue and didnāt drop the it. Lefouās actor rolls with it and does an excellent job of looking around foolishly before getting cuffed upside the head by Gaston. The stagehand then drops the bird squarely on Gastonās head. Cue laughter.
Saturday Matinee: Different stagehand throws the bird instead of dropping it and beans Lefou directly in the face with the prop. Lefou falls over. Cue laughter.
Saturday Night: Bird is missing during curtain call. Director hauls the deer head down from itās place on the tavern wall and tells Gaston and Lefou to revert to the old blocking i.e. no gunshot, no bird, just walk in with trophy. During Gaston and Lefouās conversation, gun shot sound goes off and a stagehand throws the bird onto the stageā¦from the wrong side of the stage. Lefou and Gaston stare at it in awkward silence for a solid thirty seconds before Lefou makes off-script, subtle joke about Gastonās gun going off late instead of early. Cue adults in the audience laughing.
Sunday Matinee: Director begs the stagehands to get the cue right at least once. Gunshot and bird prop go off without a hitch. Lefou accidentally catches the prop when it falls from the catwalk. Heās so startled that he caught it that Gaston runs right in to him. They drop both the gun and the bird props, and grab the wrong prop in their scramble. Gaston spends the rest of the scene gesturing dramatically with a stuffed pheasant, instead of a gun.
Sunday Night:Ā Director is fed up with bird prop, decides that Lefou should just carry bird prop in after gunshot happens off stage. Lefou accidentally squeezes the prop during the intro conversation, startling both actors into silence with the squeaky toy noise - apparently, neither of them realized it was a dog toy.
Monday Elementary School Show: Lefou walks on stage with the bird. Accidentally drops the prop during conversation with Gaston. Gaston doesnāt notice the dropped prop and steps on it. Cue depressingly sad squeaky toy noise. Cue ten years olds laughing.
I was in Twelfth Night during high school and we were lucky enough to have identical twin girls playing Viola and Sebastian. Due to the blocking in the first half of the play, their characters didnāt appear on stage together but rather almost consecutively one after the other for a majority of the first act.
It was awesome because when people saw the play and didnāt know the girls were identical twins, it literally looked like it was one actor doing multiple, uber fast costume changes.
One of our first performances was for our peers and it was a big school so lots of people didnāt know the twins. This - for some reason - was also the performance they chose to record.
Listening to the confusion of the audience during the playback was fantastic and completely topped by the moment Viola walked off stage left just as Sebastian walked on stage right and someone right beside the camera goes āOH WHAT THE FUCKā so loudly it drowned out everything else.
The best thing? That was the copy of the play that was made available for purchase by family and parents. Haha.
Oh my god. I went to one of the Spiderman shows where he flew out above the audience and then got stuck and had to awkwardly hang there for about 10 minutes, but these stories are brilliant.
okay so, my senior year of high school and Iām part of the stage crew for Peter Pan. Thereās a scene where Hook and Smee are searching for Peter and the Lost Boys. Now the theater department at my high school isnāt very well funded (in the southern USA, football is king), so the sets we managed to make were pretty kickass for the money we had. We had a structure painted like a big tree stump for the entrance to the Lost Boysā hideout. You could climb to the top of it, but also go inside it through a trap door that we kept locked up during most of the play.
Itās like our third show and everything has been going surprisingly well. Hook and Smee climb to the top of the ātree trunkā, supposedly looking for Peter and not knowing theyāre standing above his hiding spot the whole time.
Turns out someone didnāt close the trapdoor properly, because the second Hook steps on it, he plunges through the thing. Heās able to catch himself, but heās got his ass and one leg dangling through this hole where itās like a ten foot drop to the ground. All of us stage crew are literally two feet away from him offstage, just gaping at him because???? Y'all this fall looked BAD. Looked like my dude did the splits in mid air. The whiplash caused his fucking wig to come off. The audience is dead silent, all of us backstage are dead silent, the director is like already looking up how to treat a broken groin.
The kid who was playing Hook was like a fuckin sophomore and he KILLED it. He gave himself a second to catch his breath, never broke character, just looked up at his castmate and growled āSmee, you fool, help me up!ā. He ended up playing off the wig thing as an embarrassing comedic bit for Hook, and the play went on. He was completely fine. It was the best thing Iād ever seen.
There was an infamous performance of the opera Don Giovanni where in the last act Giovanni was suppose to be dragged into hell via trapdoor but the overweight actor got stuck, leading someone from the audience to shout: āHey everyone, Hellās full!!āĀ
Iām pretty sure Iāve reblogged this before but the Lefou story has me in tears every time.
As someone who did Tech stuff in High school for 4 years, Lefou!
I was a costumer on a stage version of Titanic, and in the scene where the women and children are getting in the lifeboats, one of the men (who was supposed to be saying goodbye to his wife he knows he will never see again because his is about to die), realized his fake mustache was falling off and instead of playing it cool⦠he rips it off his face, and hands it to his wife with the line āSomething to remember me byāā¦it was the funniest thing that I have ever seen in my 8 years in theatre, the entire cast lost their shit laughing at the most dramatic moment possible
I am laughing so hard Iāve been crying for ten minutes. Thank you
at the risk of sounding like a raving lunatic, i think one of my favorite trekkie memes/posts is that one where someone comments on a screenshot of tos and asks if sulu is texting, because it PERFECTLY encapsulates star trek's strange little place at the intersection of pop culture and the tech world:
like listen... 55+ years ago a bunch of actors had to use a mix of existing habits and wild imagination to come up with what they felt would be believable movements and muscle-memory for someone using completely unbelievable tech a few hundred years in the future. like tv had less than ten channels and the screen was a foot across, and they had to go "ok how would someone who's used to a tiny wireless gadget with a screen hold it and use it? how would they talk to a computer? how would the computer sound when she talked back?"
and over half a century later our own tech has surpassed the clunky retrofuture gizmos in so many ways, no doubt inspired by it, that now someone two decades into the 21st century sees an actor in the 60s holding some tiny rectangular plastic prop in both hands and immediately recognizes it as "oh, sulu's texting!" now THAT is a called shot. hell, that's putting your money on a roulette wheel in a casino that hasn't been built yet. i LOVE it. it's so star trek. sulu is absolutely texting.
The amount of people out here writing Sam as the level-headed, rational, normal-guy when in reality this idiot had not one, but TWO wanted fugitives on his doorstep covered in dust from when they were just recently nuked, talking about how the entirety of a government agency is currently trying to kill them, how there is a metal armed assassin with a vendetta against them, and how they will likely not make it out alive and the ONLY thing this man hears is "NAZIS? THE FUCK? sign me up."

canon: and then everything was horrible and they all died
me: well get me a hard hat and call me Bob the Builder because we're about to fucking fix it
So the other night during D&D, I had the sudden thoughts that:
1) Binary files are 1s and 0s
2) Knitting has knit stitches and purl stitches
You could represent binary data in knitting, as a pattern of knits and purlsā¦
You can knit Doom.
However, after crunching some more numbers:
The compressed Doom installer binary is 2.93 MB. Assuming you are using sock weight yarn, with 7 stitches per inch, results in knitted doom beingā¦
3322 square feet
Factoring it outā¦302 people, each knitting a relatively reasonable 11 square feet, could knit Doom.
Hi fun fact!!
The idea of aĀ ābinary codeā was originally developed in the textile industry in pretty much this exact form. Remember punch cards? Probably not! They were a precursor to the floppy disc, and were used to store information in the same sort of binary code that we still use:
Hereās Mary Jackson (c.late 1950s) at a computer. If you look closely in the yellow box, youāll see a stack of blank punch cards that she will use to store her calculations.
This is what a card might look like once punched. Note that the written numbers on the card are for human reference, and not understood by the computer.Ā
But what does it have to do with textiles? Almost exactly what OP suggested. Now even though machine knitting is old as balls, I feel that there are few people outside of the industry or craft communities who have ever seen a knitting machine.Ā
Hereās a flatbed knitting machine (as opposed to a round or tube machine), which honestly looks pretty damn similar to the ones that were first invented in the sixteenth century, and hereās a nice little diagram explaining how it works:
But what if you donāt just want a plain stocking stitch sweater? What if you want a multi-color design, or lace, or the like? You can quite easily add in another color and integrate it into your design, but for, say, a consistent intarsia (two-color repeating pattern), human error is too likely. Plus, it takes too long for a knitter in an industrial setting. This is where the binary comes in!
Hereās an intarsia swatch I made in my knitwear class last year. As you can see, the front of the swatch is the inverse of the back. When knitting this, I put a punch card in the reader,
and as you can see, the holes (or 0ā²s) told the machine notĀ to knit the ground color (1ā²s) and the machine was set up in such a way that the second color would come through when the first color was told not to knit.
tl;dr the textiles industry is more important than people give it credit for, and I would suggest using a machine if you were going to try to knit almost 3 megabytes of information.
@we-are-threadmage
Someone port Doom to a blanket
I really love tumblr for this š
It goes beyond this. Ā Every computer out there has memory. Ā The kind of memory you might call RAM. Ā The earliest kind of memory was magnetic core memory. Ā It looked like this:
Wires going through magnets. Ā This is how all of the important early digital computers stored information temporarily. Ā Each magnetic core could store a single bit - a 0 or a 1. Ā Hereās a picture of a variation of this, called rope core memory, from one NASAās Apollo guidance computers:
You may think this looks incredibly handmade, and thatās because it is. Ā But these are also extreme close-ups. Ā Hereās the scale of the individual cores:
The only people who had the skills necessary to thread all of these cores precisely enough were textile and garment workers. Ā Little old ladies would literally thread the wires by hand.
And thanks to them, we were able to land on the moon. Ā This is also why memory in early computers was so expensive. Ā It had to be hand-crafted, and took a lot of time.
(little old ladies sewed the space suits, too)
Fun fact: one nickname for it was LOL Memory, forĀ ālittle old lady memory.ā
I mean letās also touch on the Jacquard Loom, if you want to get all Textiles In Sciencey. It was officially created in 1801 or 1804 depending on who you ask (although you can see it in proto-form as early as 1725) and used a literal chain of punch cards to tell the loom which warps to raise on hooks before passing the weft through. It replaced the āweaver yelling at Draw Boyā technique, in which the weaver would call to the kid manning the heddlesĀ āraise these and these, lower these!ā and hope that he got it right.Ā
With a Jacquard loom instead of painstakingly picking up every little thread by hand to weave in a pattern, which is what folks used to do for brocades in Ye Olde Times, this basically automated that. Essentially all you have to do to weave here is advance the punch cards and throw the shuttle. SO EASY.Ā
ALSO, itās not justĀ ālittle old ladies sewed the first spacesuits,ā itāsĀ āthe women from the Playtex Corp were the only ones who could sew within the tolerances needed.ā Yes, THAT Playtex Corp, the one who makes bras. Bra-makers sent us to the moon.Ā
And the cool thing with them was that they did it all WITHOUT PINS, WITHOUT SEAM RIPPING and in ONE TRY. You couldnāt use pins or re-sew seams because the spacesuits had to be airtight, so any additional holes in them were NO GOOD. They were also sewing to some STUPID tight tolerances-in our costume shop if youāre within an eighth of an inch of being on the line, youāre usually good. The Playtex ladies were working on tolerances of 1/32nd of an inch. 1/32nd. AND IN 21 LAYERS OF FABRIC.Ā
The women who made the spacesuits were BADASSES. (and yes, Iāve tried to get Space-X to hire me more than once. They donāt seem interested these days)
This is fascinating. I knew there was a correlation between binary and weaving but this just takes it to a whole nother level.Ā
Iām in Venice, Italy several times a year (lucky me!) and last year I went on a private tour of the Luigi Bevilacqua factory. Founded in 1875, they still use their original jacquard looms to hand make velvet. Here are the looms:
Here are the punch cards:
Some of these looms take up to 1600 spools. That is necessary to make their many different patterns.Ā Here are some patterns:
How many punchcards per pattern?
Ā This many:
Modern computing owes its very life to textiles - And to women. From antiquity weaving has been the domain of women. Sure, we remember Ada Lovelace and Hedy Lamarr, but whileĀ Joseph Marie JacquardĀ gets all the creditĀ for his loom, the operators and designers were for the most part women.
Iāve seen this cross my dash a few times, but Iāve never watched the video before. Maybe I just didnāt pay attention when I was a kid, but I donāt remember ever seeing just how the Jacquard loom works. I just knew that the punch cards controlled which threads were raised. Itās cool to see the how, not just the what.
Donāt hide this in the tags, @drylime :D
I am never not amused by the overlap of textiles and technology. Also the fact that a huge number of fiber arts people I know are either in tech or math themselves or their partner is (myself included - husband is a programmer).
No one admits is but everyoneās REAL favorite ship dynamic is just
Person A: Character you can project onto
Person B: Your type
cant get over the fact that the mandalorian has very little plot and is literally just sexy space cowboy single dad pedro pascal flying around doing freelancing gigs for gas money to protect his 50 year old green son who is an infant. star wars has peaked
so I mostly just work all the time now, but I had today off and finally saw Frozen II and cried through the whole second half; I DID NOT EXPECT

iām going to rant a bit about frozen 2 for a moment donāt mind me
okay but fuckin
i get people being likeĀ āugh the straight romanceā in frozen 2 like kristoff doesnāt on the surface doĀ a lot
but like itās been 3 years.Ā anna kisses his cheek after talking stuff out mostly to herself about how sheās worried about Elsa, and saysĀ āthanks, babeā in a way that reminds me of how iāll thank my wife for just listening when Iām trying to work something out.Ā Ā
sheās GUTTED when she hears heās gone off with Ryder without telling her, when sheās overwhelmed and kind of scared in this whole thing and decides to go with Elsa because she needs to, but like⦠not having that emotional anchorĀ
and when theyāre finally back together and she thinks Elsaās dead she apologizes for leaving him behind because she hadĀ to try to protect her sister⦠he hugs her and saysĀ āhey, itās okay.Ā My love is not fragile.āĀ Like, yeah, he had some feelings about feeling left behind and like she doesnāt need him, but ultimately he processed it and decidedĀ āyou know what, if she needs to go off and have me to come backĀ to, thatās okay. Iām not going to stop loving her and working at this relationship just because Iām feeling a little insecure.ā
Like. I know itās kind of backgroundy and Iām not saying anyone has to ship it, but fuck, his song provided some real emotional stuff while ALSO being a hilarious and much needed break in an otherwise VERY DARK movie, and he was there for Anna as someone she counted on as support, as best he could be, and it clearly was something she treasured and relied on.
ā¦i guess what iām saying is fuck all yāall saying that kristoffās screentime was a waste or that you wish he hadnāt even been in the movie.Ā do you know how rarely we get to see happy, healthy,Ā established relationshipsĀ in disney movies?Ā Or kids movies in general?Ā Or, heck, MOVIES?Ā Unless that relationship is someoneās parents?
in conclusion, iām so happy Anna has someone who supports her and doesnāt put the burden of relieving every last one of his own insecurities on her (and she DID apologize and I feel like sheāll try not to do that again so itās not that sheās NOT helping him either) and who sheās clearly crazy about.Ā I know itās fictional and I know itās a kids movie, but if yāall are allowed to bitch that he was in the movie at all, Iām allowed to bitch about your attitude.
When Kristoff rides up and boosts her up onto Svenās back and just says: āIām here. What do you need?ā
Oh my god I know, just no hesitation, despite the fact that Iām sure he was still a little in his head about everything until the moment they noticed the earth giants. Just, immediate support, no questions about what sheās doing or why sheās doing it, just pure trust that she has a plan and needs his help and by god sheāll get it.
Kristoff gets the supportive love interest arc to Annaās heroism that I donāt think Iāve ever seen a male character have in such a clear fashion. Itās in no way my favorite ship around, but I loved him in this movie.
Yes! This this this. I think one of the only m/f ships I can think of where the guy is the support for the girlās heroics is like. Large chunks of Peter/Olivia in Fringe. which was underrated as hell and is fantastic in so many ways.
Itās not my ship but Kristoff and Anna are a good fuckin ship and I support their fans.
And the thing about the awkward proposals for comic relief? In mostĀ of those, he is trying very hard to not be himself. And thatās what sets her on edge. Heās second-guessing himself into trying to give her what he thinks she wants because thatās how itās āsupposedā to be done instead of what he knowsĀ she wants because of how well he knows her, and weāre shown pretty clearly that that is an awfulĀ plan. The proposal only works when instead of going for the big formal dramatic thing, he just saysĀ ālook, the timing sucks, but you are the most extraordinary person Iāve ever known. I love you with all that I am; will you marry meā. Now compare that to her firstĀ proposal. Hans went for the classic grand romantic stuff. Big opening number, flash and drama -what any woman or princess would want -but that isnāt Anna. And Kristoff knows it.Ā
I dunno; Iām rambling -I just came from the theater and Iāve got a lot of thoughts about it but⦠that weāre given over and over the message that for the relationship to workĀ he has to treat her like herĀ and not like anyĀ girl because not every girl wants the same thing -that him tryingĀ to treat her likeĀ āgeneric girlā -even generic dream girlĀ -is doing more to drive a wedge into their relationship than it is anything else⦠Iāve never seen that in a movie.Ā
