I'm drunk. But my favorite recent moment re: ancient Greek literature is that I have a coworker who was very Mythology Retelling vibes and she loved a "modern interpretation ' and I was like. Girl you can read modern translations and they're gonna still be better than modern retelling. And she would scoff at me being annoyed at modern retellings that seemed shallow and bad. I'd be that snob during lunch break who wouldn't tell people to not enjoy things but if someone asked why I didn't like Madeline Miller I would SAY IT.
Anyway she was very excited for the Nolan Odyssey and so I gave her my Emily Wilson translation. And then after she saw the movie she was so excited for she sidled up to me today and admitted that the movie wasn't as good as the translation. And she had several things she wanted to rant about.
And I'm like OKAY NOW YOU GET IT now you see why I'm annoying!!!! Rant away girl I got you!!!
and if i said nolan's odyssey starring no greek actors and with no recognizable aspects of greek culture or involvement by greeks, is the direct legacy of white supremacist colonialism that treated ancient greece as not just the pinnacle of ancient culture, but of an artificially created "european" culture, which white western europeans and their settler descendants, as the new pinnacle of culture, were the sole spiritual inheritors of.
^^^ PEOPLE ARE STILL THERE. There's a metro station across the street from the colosseum where i found a hair in my pizza slice. We drove by ruins of an amphitheater next to a motorway in greece once. It's literally just real places where real people live and have lived. It's not mythical perfect lands that once existed. I went to Itacha in 2023 and there was not enough parking space.

bouncing off of @an-ruraiocht’s Iliad/Odyssey/Aeneid poll I’m curious about some other ancient Greek and Roman texts
Which of the following Greek or Roman texts would you say you are most familiar with?
The Iliad (Homer)
The Odyssey (Homer)
The Aeneid (Vergil)
Antigone (Sophocles)
Oedipus Rex (Sophocles)
Medea (Euripides)
The Bacchae (Euripides)
Another Greek tragedy (tell me in the tags!)
Metamorphoses (Ovid)
Pharsalia/Bellum Civile (Lucan)
Thebaid (Statius)
Another Greek or Roman epic poem (tell me in the tags!)
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
@crabussy
as someone in the field of ecological conservation, I can promise without a shadow of a doubt that people DO care. SO MANY people care.
I have to race to sign up to volunteer trips because even with dozens of spots available, people rush to devote their unpaid free time to helping the environment. these trips often fill up within hours. people care.
you will see a lot of bad news because that is the kind of news that people pay the most attention to. I know this more than you'd think from my optimism- not only do I live somewhere facing some of the most extreme ecological issues on the planet, I also spend my time studying the Bad Stuff every single day.
to see all of this firsthand and stay hopeful is proof enough that there IS hope. I promise there is good news, brilliant news, all the time. it's just less visible. but it's no less important or impactful.
nip over to troy, bit of rough and tumble, big horse, bish bash bosh, back home to ithaca. simple as
every weekend I whip up an obscene amount of what I call my "nutrient goop" breakfast smoothie and the main downside is it is that whenever I'm seen drinking this green shit and asked what's in it, I have to preface what I'm about to say with the disclaimer that I don't believe in "suffering for health" bc I'm not a fucking protestant and I legit enjoy the heinous sounding combos I'm about to describe bc I'm a fundamental freak .
I also always feel like I gotta put the disclaimer in that the Nutrient Goop is fiscally feasible for me because I enjoy gardening and yogurt making as a way to unwind bc there is no damn way I would be out there buying 700+ grams of kale for a weekly smoothie (but kale is super easy to grow)
I do amuse myself by thinking that I'm standing proof that doing shit like making and eating live culture yogurt does NOT cure ADHD and whatever else is wrong with me
The Goop
The Heinous Ingredients (for this batch, the "greens/legumes/yogurt/sweetener/acid" is my base goal but it all depends on what's available)
Again. I enjoy this. Also one can add some matcha for a hit of caffeine.

gotta be a term that isn't the dunning Krueger effect but is a kind of similar idea where the more deep scientists get into their topic and the more exhausted they get, the more likely they are to find stupid ways to describe things
this post brought to you by a bunch of coral specialists at the end of a workshop voting to define coral, a complex animal, as "a rock with problems"
I can't tell you how much I'm probably going to print this out to frame it proudly by my beautiful overcomplicated rock animals
