Randolph Mantooth, who starred as the goofy but gallant firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on Emergency!, the 1970s NBC action show that changed life-saving services as we know it, has died. He was 80.
Mantooth died Thursday at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, his brother, Donald Mantooth, told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been "ill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner," he said.
Mantooth was just getting started as a contract player at Universal when he was hired in 1971 to play Gage opposite Kevin Tighe as his partner, Roy DeSoto, on Emergency!, created by Dragnet legend Jack Webb and Robert A. Cinader.
When he was told he was going to play a paramedic, the first thing Mantooth said was, "What the hell is a paramedic? At that time, there were only [a handful] in all of California," he told Amy Harrington in a 2013 interview for the TV Academy Foundation website The Interviews.
He said he initially didn't want to do it because it meant he would have to get a haircut.
Gage and the more buttoned-down DeSoto worked out the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Station 51, interacting often with Rampart General Hospital personnel Dr. Kelly Brackett (Robert Fuller), nurse Dixie McCall (Julie London) and Dr. Joe Early (Bobby Troup, London's real-life husband).
Emergency! aired for six seasons, from January 1972 through May 1977, then tacked on seven telefilms over the next couple of years. There even was a Saturday morning animated series in 1973-74.
When the show premiered, there were 12 paramedic units in all of North America. In the next three years, 46 states enacted laws that allowed paramedics to practice emergency medicine. Within 10 years, more than half of all Americans were within 10 minutes of a paramedic rescue or ambulance unit.
Experts say that growth simply would not have occurred without Emergency!
"When you take life-saving services out of the hospital and into the field, the number of lives that are saved is incalculable," Mantooth said. "The stars just lined up with this show perfectly for a purpose, for a greater purpose.
"I could be remembered for driving a car that has a name like the General Lee, not that there's anything wrong with that show. Instead I'm remembered for something that changed emergency medicine, forever. How lucky can any one person be?"
Randy DeRoy Mantooth was born on Sept. 19, 1945, in Sacramento. He said he lived in 24 states before he turned 18 because his father, Buck, was a pipeline construction engineer whose job kept the family on the move.
"I was never in any town long enough to really cultivate long-lasting relationships with people, so I was always living in my own little fantasy world," he said.
His mother, Sadie, was a waitress. After she and Buck divorced, she made good on her promise to give each of her four kids a car when they graduated high school.
Mantooth acted for the first time at San Marcos High in Santa Barbara, then followed his acting friends to Santa Barbara City College and then to New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he changed his first name to the more formal-sounding Randolph.
Famed Universal talent scout Eleanor Kilgallen spotted him in the play Philadelphia, Here I Come — he shared a best actor award with Brad Davis in that — and got him signed to a contract, bringing him to L.A. in 1970.
A scene he did that year with Hal Holbrook on an episode of NBC's The Bold Ones: The Senator, where his character breaks down during courtroom testimony, was seen by Cinader. Said Mantooth, "From what I was told, he went, 'That is my Johnny Gage.'"
Put to work on Emergency! alongside such seasoned performers as Fuller, London and Troupe, he and the similarly inexperienced Tighe "were in the same boat," Mantooth said. "It was more like us against them."
The pair took paramedic classes, where they learned how to insert an IV, and trained with the fire department. Cinader wanted the show to be funny but told his actors that "when the [station alarm sounds], funny is left at the door. You are now a professional," Mantooth noted. "We never got away from that."
He added: "We never went home with Johnny Gage, we never went home with Roy DeSoto, we didn't hear about Johnny Gage's drunk father beating his mother. Who cared about that? [The show] was about the job."
Cinader insisted every rescue on the series had to have been done in real life, so writers combed firefighters' logs for storylines. Meanwhile, NBC executives made sure that no one would die and no blood would be shown during the first couple of seasons.
Mantooth said that "if I fell off my roof cleaning the gutters, I'd want [Gage] to be there because he knows what he is doing."
He and Tighe had the same agent, shared a motor home during the entire run of their show and became great friends. The series ended, Mantooth said, because his and Tighe's original seven-year contracts had expired, Tighe didn't want to continue and Mantooth didn't want to go on without him.
When Mantooth raced home in 1978 to find his ranch in the Lobo Canyon area of Agoura Hills engulfed in flames, Tighe was already there, trying to get the animals safely off the property. Tighe later served as the best man at Mantooth's 2002 wedding to actress Kristen Connors.
Mantooth followed Emergency! by joining the second season of the ABC comedy Operation Petticoat in 1978, followed by work the next year on the ABC comedy Detective School and on the NBC miniseries The Seekers, produced by Cinader.
After guest-starring on such shows as Battlestar Galactica, Charlie's Angels, The Fall Guy, Diagnosis Murder and L.A. Law, Mantooth was in the middle of getting separated from his wife and wanted out of L.A., so he moved to New York to work on Loving and said he had a blast.
On As the World Turns, he stepped in to play Oakdale chief of detectives Hal Munson after actor Benjamin Hendrickson died by suicide in 2006.
Later, he appeared in such films as He Was a Quiet Man (2007) and Bold Native (2010) and on episodes of FX's Sons of Anarchy in 2011. A year later, he and Tighe were named honorary fire chiefs by the L.A. County Fire Department.
In addition to his brother, he's survived by his sister, Tonya.
In his TV Academy Foundation interview, Mantooth got emotional talking about how in the '70s he was saved by paramedics who figured out he had carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a malfunctioning house furnace and how other emergency personnel brought his sister back from the dead after she was injured in a car accident in the '80s.
"Do I respect paramedics? Do I respect firefighters?" he asked. "There's a debt I owe them that I probably can't ever pay back. But I'm gonna try."
Reunion: The Sound of Providence Live Blog [Episode 1]
Guess what lads….
I’m ill! Yay.
So while I battle with an irritating bout of upper respiratory infection, I jumped back into DMBJ. (What a shock).
Now, as some of you may be aware, I did plan to put Reunion: Sound of Providence as my immediate next DMBJ series, but, after some advice from commenters, I did watch the first episode of ‘Adventure Behind the Bronze Door’ to bridge some of the story after Ultimate Note.
And, I’m sorry, if I’m interpreting the story correctly - Zhang Qiling took Wu Xie’s place to guard some hellhole for ten years and Wu Xie decided to wait ten years of his very much mortal life for the guy to come back??? I mean, it’s very much one thing for an immortal character to wait for a loved one, it’s quite another game again for someone with a natural lifespan to do the same. Did Wu Xie know that Zhang Qiling was essentially ageless at that point???
Because if he did, that’s an insane love story and even if he didn’t that’s still incredibly gut wrenching.
Anywho the bingo card is back lads because of course it is but I’m also semi prepared to get walloped in the feelings because Wu Xie is now older and I’m feeling very angsty about the fact that only one half of this ship is immortal.
But I’m super excited for this series because of Zhu Yilong - who absolutely killed it as Shen Wei in Guardian and who is already half of one of my beloved ships (Weilan) while I know Huang Junjie from The Spirealm. I have very mixed feelings on that show so I’m really excited to see him in something else and maybe get a fresh perspective on him.
Anyway, enough preamble, here we go!
The third brand of Wu Sanxing has dropped and he’s traumatizing the children but he seems more likable than the Time Raiders version. So far every single version of this man has been different. Here he’s (so far) coming across as borderline fatherly while in Time Raiders he was a puncheable dick and in Ultimate Note he was an irritating deadbeat but kind of funny in a pathetic way. I’m very curious to know what he comes across as in the books because there’s such variation in his portrayal. I know some of it can probably be explained away with the twin-thing and Xie Lianhuan but all three versions have been SO different that I’d be fascinated to know what he’s like in the source material to get such a wide range of actor interpretations.
Well, I suppose some things stay the same - even when Wu Sanxing isn’t here he’s causing problems. Also, I’m hella interested to see what Zhu Yilong’s older Wu Xie is gonna be like.
I’m guessing Wu Xie looks kind of a mess because it’s missing Xiaoge hours?? Also you might as well be X Files all these strange tomb occurrences are because of weird space rocks
As depressing as that may be for you, Wu Xie, I feel it would probably be for the best if he is.
And why aren’t you living with him??? Is it angsty reasons or the censors??? Was there another Pingxie split that I missed? Last time I saw them they were engaged with the sword Wu Xie carved for him. I know there was a ten year separation but I figured they’d be back together after that :(
Is this like Hei Xiazi in Mystery of the Abyss and we’re having angsty separation hours between our main pairings???
Well, they might be older but I don’t think they got that much wiser.
Also, did we learn nothing about messing round with weird green corpse goo from Mystery in the Abyss??? Okay, I realise you two weren’t there for that but I’m sure someone should be aware not to mess with weird green corpse goo.
So now Wu is possibly dying???? I guess we’re starting the bingo card on a fucking depressing note now damn. :( this was meant to be a fun thing but now I’m just bummed. Also, Xiaoge, the reason you aren’t immediately here better be because you’re searching for some sort of cure for your fiance.
Look at my man all cleaned up and off to get his deadbeat uncle. Honestly, I feel like you should drop his ass and go live in the mountains with Xiaoge though.
Well, we learned never to bring Wang Pangzi on a stealth mission.
I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-

Several times at today's concert Zhang Xincheng forgot that he's human and not actually part of the dmbj Zhang family. For instance, his cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (??!!!) - CTTO for the fancam.
Love the operatic elements he added at "Galileo Figaro!"
Straight ship for straight people: Of course A-Ning and Wu Xie is the straight ship for straight people. Put a boy and a girl in the same scene -- it's romance! He doesn't have to have a reason to like her! She doesn't have to have a reason to like him! They have mismatched genitals and that means it's true love! Or at least that's what I've learned from like 95% of TV het couples. I think on a fan wiki somewhere it says A-Ning can be considered Wu Xie's love interest, and I'm like, can she, though?
Gay ship for straight people: Pingxie is a gay ship for straight people in that it's so gay that even the straight people notice. In fact, I'm going to go on record as saying pretty much any m/m pairing that Harper's Bazaar can make a photoshoot for counts as a gay ship for straight people. Also, it's especially a gay ship for straight people if you ship it in the way where you take the two conventionally attractive boys and exclude the objectively hottest member of the Triangle just because he's not idol-pretty. (I'm looking at you, all the figurine shops that won't make me a Pangzi.)
Straight ship for gay people: Liang Wan is the thirstiest bitch in the world and we love her for it. She is a tattooed doctor on a mission to get that boy who's half her age (who's actually three times her age) and ride him like she stole him. That 98-year-old virgin isn't going to know what hit him. Also they can crossdress as one another. If that's not for gay people, I don't know what. (Your bonus thought for today: Liang Wan/Zhang Rishan t4t.)
(taken and tidied from an interactive activity during the book-signing event on 6th July 2026. this is for reference only, canonically Xilaimian changes their menu items according to the seasonal ingredients available and new dishes they come up with.)

the Relationship Ambiguity Zone™️ is a beautiful place to be. safe place to put your characters. put all characters into Relationship Ambiguity Zone. is that guy your mentor or your dad? Ambiguous!!! are you friends or enemies? Ambiguous!!! is it romantic? is it platonic? is it sexual? Ambiguous!!!!!!! never categorize anything ever in the Relationship Ambiguity Zone. just make them fucking weird about each other.
i am terminally A Sucker for characters who have a towering and generally earned ego about their own ability and absolutely no self-worth about themselves as a person at all. intoxicating combo.
"How to get out of a reading slump" advice is normally like, pick up something light and easy, something fun, something similar to stuff you've enjoyed reading in the past.
But when that fails, I cannot recommend enough: going to the library/bookstore, to a section you don't normally read, and reading the blurbs of any and every book that catches your attention for whatever reason, until you find one that leaves you with a burning question that can only be answered by reading the whole book.
Never underestimate the power of Needing to Know The Answer.
Like, I'm an avid epic fantasy reader. I like big series, complicated plotlines with tons of characters and settings. I struggle to get through classics or anything non-fiction, and I never browse the mystery or thriller sections.
And yet, so far the list of books that have broke a reading slump for me include: Jane Eyre, Cymbeline (Shakespeare play), Pretty Little Liars, Piranessi (fantasy, yes, but not my normal variety), a mystery about a 13 year old girl who suspecrs she was kidnapped as a baby, a non-fiction book on the bureaucracy behind the gestapo, and a non-fiction memoir about the residential school that used to be near where I live.
Curiosity is a muscle that needs to be stretched, and it feels good! And brains crave novelty, variety! Just like how we need variety in our diets to get enough nutrients, I think brains need a variety of "nutrients" (experiences) too. I wonder how often my reading slumps are the result of my brain getting "bored" with the usual.
