If you've got a mostly empty bobbin and are about to do a bunch of visible topstitching it's best to temporarily switch to a full bobbin and then go back to the mostly empty one when you're back to doing stitching that won't show.
okay i have an interesting problem i need help with
i inherited my grandmother's embroidery stand, took it apart for storage and only realised at the final step of disassembly i should have taken pictures for reference to put it back together whoops
putting it back together has foiled both me and my mother (who is really good at contraptions so that was. kind of a shock).
does anyone have an embroidery stand or experience putting them together that could help me figure out how it goes together?
this is what we have so far. we can't figure out how to attach the actual frame which holds the fabric (not pictured for privacy reasons but happy to share in dms if it would help). we're pretty sure we're mostly there: the top of the frame is secured under the block at the top, there's space for it. but there's nothing for the frame to rest on at the bottom, except maybe those two arms closest to the front, but they aren't stable and the frame doesn't fit on them comfortably. any advice welcome, and please share if you can for reach!
test weaving of penelope's tapestry on the chiusi skyphos:
reference:
there are some adjustments I need to make for tension, but I'd like to make the next version into a header band for a warp-weighted loom so I can try weaving the whole pot, including telemachus and penelope.
progress?
the proportions on the header band have improved, but I think I maybe should have doubled the weft threads for the warp.
also if anyone wants to knit the heddles for me, please be my guest. the last time I tied on heddles, I put the bar in the wrong place and had to redo the whole thing.
in true penelope fashion, I may need to unweave and start over, but at least now I've got the loom weights and heddles in place.
I started weaving the spear, penelope, and the right border via double-weave with the intent to leave the remaining warp threads unwoven (as they would be on penelope's loom on the pot), but predictably this is giving me tension problems. I either need to increase the loom weights or just weave the black layer and leave the orange warp threads unwoven, and then switch colors once I get to the heddle bars in the drawing, with the black warp threads floating on top. (I guess weft-faced tapestry would be a third option, if I add a ton more tension.)
either way, this is going to take me the full three years of penelope's stratagem, or perhaps the entire twenty years of odysseus's absence, primarily because clearing the sheds takes a monumental effort each time with this double-weave setup (which I'm not even sure is how it's supposed to be done, I kind of set it up based on vibes and what I thought made sense from floor loom setups).
I have 999 problems and warp tension is 997 of them (the other two are my selvedges).

Finally managed to iron my delicious linen fabric!! I wish I could show you how beautiful it is in movement. Stop potion animators would use this to animate water. It's so shiny and sorry and flowy, and luscious
Before and after ironing!

Sometimes you wake up feeling absolutely terrible with an awful migraine and simply the only POSSIBLE thing you can do to console yourself is spend 3.5 hours making yourself a fish bag to hold your water bottle in order to cheer yourself up. I saw a post on here awhile back of somebody's fish bag and was like "Oh I want!" Well now I have!
I used leftovers from various pants I've made. As you can see, the purple I used for the head is the same as the purple of the pants I'm wearing in the photo. This green linen I got from Metro Textiles turned out to be absolutely awful quality so I've been looking for something to do with it and this is fine for now. It's a fun silly little thing that I don't plan on using regularly, unlike the pants I made out of it that disintegrated at the seams within 6 months of sewing them. Still pissed about that.
Look at this buttonhole I stitched where the drawstring exits the fish!! Isn't it beautiful?! I wanted to stitch the seam allowance down a little bit here and ended up doing buttonhole stitch around the edges of the opening just to make it nice.
Okay now I am going to go back to hiding from the light, though. Because while my mood is way better thanks to fish bag I do still feel like, really unwell and awful on a physical level.
PS before folks ask, here is the tutorial the OP of the other post mentioned, though like OP of that post I sort of just got the general gist of the idea and did my own thing. Has a written tutorial and a video tutorial, though part of the written tutorial is "watch the video to learn how to draw the fish pattern" which is annoying for those of us who hate video tutorials or find them inaccessible (hi me I find video tutorials inaccessible because of my disabilities give me the photo tutorial for fucks sake ahem anyway)
Hey, I figure there's enough weavers out there, but is anyone selling any linen kitchen towels? I'm not picky on color or anything, but I'd rather be using nice linen towels over plastic wrap these days for my bread baking and whatnot.
Me: it's just a little hat how hard can it be?
Universe: lads lads lads this clumsy newbie who's scared of her sewing machine is trying to construct a 3D shape by sewing straight slippery little bits of lycra to curved slippery little bits of lycra. She's using the 'I dunno, the only one I could find that looked about normal' foot. The cat thinks he's helping. It's gonna be hilarious.
I made a hat for running and swimming in the sun. There's a lot wrong with it but it fits and it's got dinosaurs on. I used the correct needles for the type and density of fabric and only broke two of them.
As much as I winced reading your description, as long as you don't mind stuff looking a little wonky, "beginner" difficulty is a state of mind.

big news for people who are me
Archaeologists uncovered a 1,000-year-old Viking textile production center near Aarhus, revealing large-scale cloth making and trade.
The site sits near Søften in eastern Jutland, about 10 kilometers north of modern Aarhus. Excavations by the Moesgaard Museum show a planned production area instead of a normal farming village. The settlement covered at least 100,000 square meters. Most of the work focused on making textiles, though other forms of handwork also took place there.
Researchers found an area where flax was prepared before workers turned the plant into linen. They also uncovered 82 pit houses, small sunken buildings linked with Viking workshops. Many held spindle whorls and loom weights, showing cloth production took place on a large scale.
Should I attempt something I’ve never done before? (putting fringe on the ends of the follower scarf)

it's done! 144 squares crocheted all in a two-colour variation of a granny square and then seamed together in a baby blanket.
I had a lot of fun with this project and I also learned a lot along the way. Looking at the finished blanket, I can see how different my tension was for squares by how much they puff up after the seaming! This picture is after washing and drying, because first off, a blanket made over a year and a bit probably has a bunch of dirt on it and second, I don't want there to be any surprises if I tell the parents to toss it in the washer and dryer. I also lightly ironed but that didn't really stop the puffing.
I am extremely pleased with the design I chose for this - there were many variations in the running (and I had a little poll for it as well, here and on my discord) and in the end I went with a fun asymmetrical pattern that still had a lot of orderly lines to make me happy.
Also cannot believe that the colour lines could turn out this crisp - like I am shocked at the effect when they're arranged like this.
And now that I've made this, I do want to make something else with half square triangle crochet but not with cotton again because this was a pain to seam and it definitely has less stretch than wool would. Before this, I had bought yarn to make a cardigan from half square triangles and maybe I make that or I try for something else. We'll see.
This is what the backside looks like! the squares are joined with a slip stitch join through the back loops of the squares. It also worked out that there were 11 seams horizontally and vertically and I used 11 colours on this so I just used a different colour per seam and then did a final slip stitch edge all the way around.
And I finished it before the baby was born turned one year old! Look, it's fine, it's still much bigger than her. Finished dimensions are approximately 30"x30".
After a 20 year hiatus I finally sat down with my nan and started learning bobbin lace again and it was so much fun
