Like this young person didn't even know about goddamn Gutenberg which is a SHAME. I linked to it and they went "aw yiss time to do a theft" and I was like "I mean yo ho ho and all that, sure, but. you know gutenberg is entirely legal, right?"

Project Gutenberg is a gigantic collection of books that are in the public domain.  You can read the books through the site or you can download them in various formats so you can get the format you prefer for your eReader of choice.

It is free. 

It is legal.

I was reviewing the list of the top 100 books downloaded yesterday and I saw a fair few that I had to read for college classes - so if you’re a college student and your professor assigns you to read Plato or any number of older works, check here before you buy a copy.

If you look at the first reblog from me I also recommended a few other resources, most of which were from www.archive.org, home of the Wayback Machine! They run openlibrary.org, where you can check out ebooks of some public domain titles! They even have the Bone series by Jeff Smith!

And archive.org itself has all kinds of public domain media including music and movies! For Dracula fans, here's a radio show adaptation of the book, starring Orson Welles! And here's a 1920 movie adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," starring John Barrymore, the grandfather of Drew Barrymore!

Public domain works in the US are:

Anything published (in the US) from 1927 or earlier (this number goes up every year for quite a while), and

Anything published between 1928 and 1963 that wasn't renewed, and

Anything published before 1989 without a proper copyright notice.

(Don't go looking for things in that third category unless you've studied a LOT about copyright law. Mostly that covers things like "weird little newsletters" and "self-published booklets" and sometimes fanzines. But most publications have a copyright notice in them.)

There's also some oddball exemptions here and there; copyright law is a tentacled mess. But those are the basic guidelines. (Except for audio. Audio has its own set of rules. It's weird.) (I mentioned tentacles, did I not? Double the amount of them you were thinking of.)

There are a lot of works from the 50s and early 60s that were not renewed, especially short stories published in magazines.

Women: this is bad

That Jesus is the most frequently mentioned person in the Quran with 93 different mentions?

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

Science: Well actually, you have inferior immune systems, you are more likely to die in childhood, you have less ability to fight off cancer, you're less likely to survive a famine, you're more likely to have a genetic disease with only 1 X, you're more likely to have mental deficiencies with only 1 X, you don't live as long, and we just found out that running can kill you.... So men are actually rather frail, evolutionarily speaking....

1. he will clean the house, the public spaces, the common areas, the work space (and anywhere a woman may tread) fully and with complete competence, so that it is hygienic and sanitary and nice to look at and pleasant to be around. he will do this without any expectation that a woman or any woman will assist him.

2. he will not consume any material classified as media that depicts women (fictional or real) in positions (sexual or not) of humiliation, torture, bodily harm, pain, torment, dehumanization, commodification, or death, which have been made for the express purpose to tantalize, titillate, or arouse an audience of men, and he will not masturbate to the thought of such media.

3. he will expect no children, no marriage, no servitude or attention from any woman, and will not expect any woman to forego her own health and safety to uplift his quest for legacy and import; nor will he expect her to prioritize him and his goals, his desires, or needs over her or another woman’s. rather he will, when possible, prioritize her own self-fulfillment and self-actualization without her asking.

4. he will not rape.

5. he will kill rapists. he will not punish a woman who kills a rapist, but indeed he will try his best to spare her the pain by killing the rapist for her. when a woman kills a rapist, he will aid in uplifting the woman in the community in announcing and celebrating her good deed. he will expect no same approval and distinction and will do his work quietly and unassumingly. He will find no pleasure in the act and expect no reward, not least which from the rapist’s victims.

6. he will speak when spoken to by a woman, and he will do so in a manner of utmost respect. he will otherwise cast his eyes down as to prevent her discomfort, and make no act or sound to gain her attention. he will be appreciative for any attention a woman deigns to give him, and he will not expect any attention further than she gives.

7. he will disown any god, all gods, and take no interest in the pursuit of godliness. the matters of theology will only be discussed, known, and understood by women, and he will have no desire taking part. he will not listen; he will not concern himself. he will not argue with a woman about the affairs of gods and spirituality, up to and including god's lack of existence. he will understand that he has no valuable insight regardless of his agreement in such matters.

8. he will labor graciously to provide a world that fosters the health and imagination of women, with no expectations for his own rewards.

9. he will not wage war; he will not fight in a war.

So while it’s true that the Enterprise is not as big as people think, that goes double for the Falcon!
