I still don't know where to start with this one.
I just... This book gave me hope?
About a third of the way in, I was struck with the terrifying realisation that narratively a bitter-sweet ending would make a lot of sense. I spend the rest of the book on the edge of my seat, literally up until the last couple of pages.
Can you blame me? I mean, look at the cover? Does this cover scream happy ending? No, it don't.
If you're a writer, I'm sure you're familiar with the siren's song of the tragedy. There is a reason why actual millennia ago the Greeks named the tragedy as one of the three types of plays, comedy and satyr play (a combination of both), being the other two. And they were right! There is something beautiful about tragedies, a kind of universal appeal few are immune to or Titanic wouldn't have grossed over two billion at the box office.
These two, Knell and Percy, have seen so much shit. The kind of shit where authors often give em the ol' yeller treatment at the end of the story. You know, their burden was too heavy for them to carry. So in one last act of heroic self-sacrifice they die for their loved one and give them the strength and purpose to keep on going.
And don't get me wrong, I love that trope. Stories about sacrifice are beautiful. Like a warm embrace, like the catharsis you get from a good cry, especially in these times when it feels like the world is going to shit all around us.
The Traitor & The Wretch is not one of those stories.
The Traitor & The Wretch dares to ask the question of what things worked out well, actually? What if those insurmountable odds turn out to be pretty mountable after all?
What if there is another, better day?
Suffice to say, I did get a really good cry out of it anyway.
Funny enough, Jasmine Walls did not set out to torture me with ambiguity for a couple hundred pages! (I got my copy of tt&tw as an ARC and she was so lovely as to answer a couple questions, too!)
"I knew going in that this was a romance with a happy ending[.] [...]You know, it's funny what happens when I work on a project for so long. I sometimes forget how differently it reads to anyone looking at it with fresh eyes. I call it a romance (with the expected Happily Ever After) and I, as the author, know that it's going to have a happy ending, but that's probably not super obvious. I can't help but laugh because to me, it's taken on an almost cozy feel but looking back, wow, yeah, things get pretty grim now and then, don't they? [...]" - Jasmine Walls
And she's right, too! Tt&tw is really a very cozy book, underneath all the grim-darkness. Especially on my second read, knowing how it was going to end, I started to appreciate the almost ghibli-esque slowness of it more. Don't get me wrong, this book is action-packed, but in between there are scenes that are so quite and tenderly romantic, it'll hurt you in a good way.
Knell, more so even than Percy, has been put through the wringer. And seeing him change throughout the book, slowly starting to heal from the trauma he's lived through, these experiences that other him even physically, I adored every word.
Really, this book is about hope for a better future.
And spite, too. Percy especially embodied a real spirit of Fuck You, Make Me. Or, as Jasmine puts it:
"Often, this world feels so full of cruelty and our selves so small in comparison. Sometimes it's not about saving the world. It's enough just to survive another day. It's enough to reach out to one other person with empathy. And when hope feels too far away, spite will hold me over until I find it again. In that way, I relate closest to Percy. He has a line: "[Percy] had yet to meet a person trying to kill him that he hadn't wanted to outlive." I feel much the same about the current state of the world. I want to live to see something better and, if I can, I want to be part of that shift, even if it's only in the smallest way." - Jasmine Walls
I like to think a little of Percy's, well, persistance and some of Knell's whimsy have rubbed off on me.
I only hope that after reading all of this, I've convinced you to give this book a shot, because it truly deserves it.

Hey guys, I'm recommending this book because it was really touching and interesting to read, and not enough people are talking about it. It's called 'The Traitor and the Wretch' by Jasmine Walls.
There was a kickstarter campaign (I was a backer), but you can buy copies of the paperback and the ebook on the Bonedust Press website.
Why should you buy it?
It takes two fantasy archetypes, the Dishonorable Traitor and the Cringing Wretch, and asks an important question:
What if they fell in love?
If you've ever thought that the Chosen One seemed a bit too sure of themself, if you ever felt bad for nameless henchmen slaughtered by the Good Guys in droves, if you ever wondered what happens to characters who fall sideways out of their destined role in a story -- this one's for you.
I don't think it's a perfect book. In fact, I know it's not. There were times where it dragged a little, and there were a couple questions that never got answered. BUT. The beating, bloody heart of this book is the relationship between the two leads, and that heart is strong. It's a character study done with real talent and care. Knell and Percy are greater than the sum of their parts. As independent characters and as a pair, they captivated me.
You like some weird-ass eldritch gore? It's got that. You like tenderness? This book made me tear up a few times, the tenderness was so very tender. You like seeing characters claw their way out of some truly dire situations? There's peril galore.
I think part of why I love it so much is it winds up being a story about stories. You do not have to give in to the role set out for you. I think that's beautiful.
Anyway, go read it, 'cause I know this place would eat it up!
