if you need an example of a person with no empathy who practices sympathy and compassion, look no further than data from star trek: the next generation. he doesn’t have emotions at all, but he’s still kind to people and wants to help them.

I had a notion shortly after this got posted to commission a follow-up based on how I pictured this encounter continuing (it involves getting swung into a tree), but (knowing that it wouldn’t fly) I toned down the idea to get it to potentially fly.

It still got shot down due to the artist not feeling comfortable with it.

I took it on the chin, let the matter drop…

And I found someone who was more willing to do it. (Shout out @butterrrmoth)

“I’m not drunk”

This. Is actually. A really fascinating concept. 

Because this ship is a COMPLETELY different experience depending on if you place it in classic canon or modern day times. 

Like yes the modern day version cuts out a lot of the iconic stuff (cigar, pistols, GAY Caballeros) but also, from the perspective of “The Disney mascots as actors in the main line canon movies” perspective, this is a (comparatively) free and open minded time for the ship.

But in the alternative, them 1940′s. It gets WAY more interesting. 

You’ve got Donald, within years of ordinances passing allowing homosexuality as a viable reasoning for being dishonorably discharged from the Navy. Any HINT of anything between him and either of these two would be suicidal to his career and would absolutely get his nephews taken away from him, without question. 

I want to write here about some of the things I’ve found. But I don’t feel culturally aware enough here to make any sort of observations about what I’ve found while being sure of my sensitivity. Let me just say, Googling “Homosexual views 1940 United states/Mexico/Brazil” is a wild ride, between Bahia being the first town to form a LGBT alliance nearly 30 years after this film, Rio Di Gennaro and Mexico city both being listed in some sources as hubs for LGBT+ nightlife, REALLY interesting tidbits about cultural views at the time. 

And my personal favorite, “Guys in charge hate the homos and have really archaic and bigoted views, but the average gay had it pretty easy as long as they didn’t act stereotypical or do anything really stupid because said bigotry meant they weren’t getting looked at” With really interesting papers on old letters and diaries revealing the Average Gay Cariocan rolling their eyes at the hyper flamboyant that the average physiologists were focusing on for their “what is gay?” theories and enjoying the booming secret nightlife, while the Mexican government and loud bigoted side of the masses pushed Machismo like crazy and the average person more or less shrugging their shoulders at their obviously “closeted” neighbor.

Boy howdy, let me tell you, the funniest part is probably the hard push for the respective “tops and bottoms w/ hyper masculinity and femininity” stereotype from authoritative sources at the time in both contries, only now we’re finding out that was a very small subset of such countries while the regular gay just kinda giggled in the background from their anonymity, something we’re find out was a thing in America back then as well. 

The things I am READING

This all leading me to a couple conclusions.

1. If I’m reading this right, Brazil had the biggest booming not so secret nightlife, and Donald was there to have some fun, and he’s very handsome ok, This is all Jose “I’m gonna get me a sugar daddy” CArioca’s fault

2. A very good explanation for Panchito and Jose not visiting Donald often. They do a lot at first. Everyone always thinks the grass is greener on the other side. The US is famously liberal in it’s freedoms, Rio is a party paradise, Mexico is wide open plains of privacy. But we know in canon comics that Panchito and Jose both get harassed for their nationality unless they name drop Donald and that’s just their race, not to mention Donald’s careers. Rio De Gennaro provides anonymity only to a degree. 

What I’m saying is that the three of them go on lots of “Desert Adventures” together

3. The fact that none of them are stereotypical means the could probably fall into each other’s arms and kiss and as long as they say “no homo” after most people won’t be bothered. 

4. This is the 1940′s aka the GOD DAMN golden age for hyper poetic gay love letters from Army men and women you can not tell me they don’t write letters to each other every other week declaring their undying love.

That being said about Daisy. I always feel so bad for Daisy. Disney gives her such the short end of the stick personality wise, let her grow out of Minnie’s sassy BFF.

But like from a romantic standpoint, Daisy didn’t stand a chance.

Donald has spent most of his adult romantic life in an explicable polygamous relationship with two other men who don’t attach the idea of sexual monogamy to emotional commitment. All three of them sleep with women and have zero doubts about each others feelings. Heck he really REALLY wishes they could all meet but he also knows Daisy is monogamous (which is why he does get jealous of her dates. He knows she’s monogamous, so he’s less jealous of her dating, and more of what she’s saying by dating other men when he fails her), so like, he tries. 

 But he has SUCH a hard time because he doesn’t have those monogamous explicit boundaries. Has a really hard time understanding what she considers cheating and not, what she wants from him and doesn’t. And of course it’s the 40′s, he’s not going to tell her about his male lovers, she doesn’t know and understand any of this and he comes off as uncaring and unfaithful and I REALLY want to see a confrontation between Daisy’s insecurities and jealously and the other Caballero’s protectiveness because it’s literally a Drama explosion waiting to happen. And when it’s all said and done I do think Daisy might actually understand and if all else fails….

There's a lot of confusion about different "poxes" in this post (which wasn't my intention, and now I feel bad), so here's a general overview (also, obligatory apology for messiness, this was written at like 1 AM):

Smallpox:

Smallpox, caused by variola virus, was a massive problem historically. It existed in the Western hemisphere for thousands of years (genetic evidence of smallpox has been found in Egyptian mummies from ≈1500 BCE, but it was probably around long before then), and it was introduced to the New World during the Columbian exchange, which had devastating consequences for indigenous populations (which were already suffering from colonialist violence, which made epidemics much worse than they already would've been). Historically, smallpox had a case fatality rate between 30-50%, and survivors were often left disfigured or permanently disabled (you've probably seen pictures of smallpox scars, but smallpox can also cause blindness and other complications). Importantly, smallpox only affects humans—it has no animal hosts—which is why it's one of the few infectious diseases to have been completely eradicated. As of May 8, 1980, it officially no longer exists outside of certain designated American and Russian laboratories. (There are, however, concerns that it could be used as a bioweapon, which is why the government still stockpiles smallpox vaccines and antivirals. I wrote my bioethics term paper on this exact issue, and incidentally, it's one of the major reasons why I believe that STEM majors should take ethics courses!)

There were two strains of variola virus: variola major and variola minor. Variola major was much more dangerous, with a much higher mortality rate; variola minor typically didn't cause severe disease. Fortunately, infection with one strain conferred immunity against the other. Both strains are now eradicated. (People sometimes confuse variola minor with other viruses like cowpox and horsepox, but they're different things.)

There were four clinical forms of smallpox: ordinary (classic smallpox, associated with the rash you usually see in pictures), modified (less severe, often occurred in vaccinated people who got infected anyway), malignant (caused a flat rash instead of the usual pustules, associated with immune dysfunction, almost always fatal), and hemorrhagic (caused severe bleeding, and also near-universally fatal.) All of the non-ordinary forms could be difficult to diagnose because they looked so different from typical smallpox. The less serious "modified" form was often confused with chickenpox, and the hemorrhagic form was sometimes assumed to be a completely different disease. Occasionally, historical sources will refer to hemorrhagic smallpox as "black pox," with or without an understanding that it's caused by the same virus as ordinary smallpox.

Other relevant viruses:

Cowpox, caused by cowpox virus (an orthopoxvirus similar to smallpox) causes mild disease in cows, humans, and several other animals. Infection with cowpox virus confers immunity to variola—Edward Jenner noticed this relationship and used material from cowpox lesions to inoculate people against smallpox.

Vaccinia virus, another orthopoxvirus, is the source of the modern smallpox vaccine. It's closely related to both cowpox and horsepox (weirdly, it's actually closer to horsepox), but it's distinct enough to be its own species. Infection usually causes mild symptoms, and, of course, confers immunity to smallpox.

Chickenpox is an entirely different thing. It's caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is a herpesvirus, not a poxvirus at all! Infection with varicella-zoster does not confer immunity to smallpox or any other poxvirus—chickenpox is from a totally different family.

So why are the names so weird and confusing? Why is everything about all of this so weird and confusing?

There are multiple reasons for this, so bear with me.

Historically, a "pox" was any disease that caused a bumpy rash of pustles/blisters. Chickenpox, smallpox, and the other "poxes" all cause superficially similar rashes—thus the similar names. (Even though we know now that chickenpox comes from a completely different family, this wouldn't have been apparent before the dawn of modern medicine.)

Smallpox was given that name to differentiate it from syphilis, which was known as the "great pox" when it first appeared in Europe. (Fun[?] microbiology fact: There are debates about the origins of syphilis, but the most common theory holds that it originated in the New World, and Christopher Columbus brought it back to Spain. In that way, it's kind of the inverse of smallpox.) Historically, smallpox was also known by a variety of other names in different European, Asian, and African cultures. Again, this gets murky, because historical physicians sometimes struggled to distinguish between similar-looking-but-different diseases.

Other poxviruses are often named after the animals in which they were first identified. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, though, and it can sometimes be misleading (for example, monkeypox virus was first discovered in laboratory monkeys, but it more often affects rodents and other small mammals. The disease formerly known as "monkeypox" was recently renamed "mpox" because the name wasn't accurate.) Also, some poxviruses aren't named after animals at all! It's a weird and inconsistent system (but a lot of virus names are kinda weird and inconsistent).

Related to the above: We don't even know where the name "chickenpox" comes from. I mean, we know it was called a "pox" because it causes a pox-y rash, but we don't know where the "chicken" part originated. There are multiple theories about this, none of which are definitive. The disease itself has nothing to do with chickens.

Basically, a lot of the weirdness is a result of historical naming practices—people identified and named these diseases before modern virology existed, and those names stuck, so now we have similar names for superficially-similar-but-ultimately-different viruses, and names whose origins have been completely lost to time. Later, virologists muddied the waters further by naming newly-discovered poxviruses after the animals in which they were first seen, even when these animals aren't natural hosts or reservoirs of those viruses. It's a mess! And, again, all of this is complicated by the fact that some of these diseases were very hard to diagnose (or distinguish from one another) before modern medicine existed. Now, we can sequence viral DNA and figure out what's actually going on—which viruses caused which symptoms, whether those viruses were closely related, and whether being infected with one disease conferred immunity to another—but historical doctors and scientists didn't have those tools, so they were doing they best they could with very limited information, and that led to a lot of weirdness in terms of how these viruses were named and classified. Our current system inherited some of that weirdness, so here we are.

TL;DR: Poxvirus names are messy. Smallpox is caused by variola virus, which has two strains: variola major (the more severe one) and variola minor (less severe). Cowpox and vaccinia are different viruses in the same family, and being infected with one of them confers immunity to smallpox. Chickenpox isn't a poxvirus at all, but a herpesvirus—it just happens to cause a pockmark-y rash that looks superficially similar to smallpox pustules (and mild forms of smallpox were historically confused with chickenpox).

(P.S. none of this is super relevant to the average person, so don't feel bad if you didn't know any of it. Unless you are a history major inventing new conspiracies about smallpox, in which case you definitely should feel bad.)

@vividaway​ Randall Munroe is an internet cartoonist who runs the ‘xkcd’ online comic series, which has run from 2006 up to today, with new comics every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Xkcd isn’t an ongoing story, just a series of funny, wholesome, depressing, or oddly scientifically informative comics.

In 2010, Randall’s fiance was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. He didn’t share too many details at first, but things tended to bleed into his comics: sometimes funny, sometimes sad.

Often in this time, other cartoonists would write in guest comics for Randall, or he’d put in short filler pieces, to try and fill space while nonstop cancer treatments took up most of his time.

In 2012, he posted a comic called ‘Two Years’, about the time since the diagnosis. It’s the one that hasn’t yet been posted here (although parts of it are included in the other comics), and it commemorates some of the things that had happened in the two years since the diagnosis.

There are representations of Randall and his fiance being together for her treatment, worrying together, traveling the world, and getting married. It’s still depressing, but it’s a lot more hopeful, showing how they’ve still managed to have happy moments together, and things will still get better.

Themes of cancer continued in xkcd, but they increasingly became less about fear and nihilism, and more about hope, or just cool facts related to cancer.

At the top of this post is the comic posted in 2017: Seven Years. In it, Randall and his wife are traveling more, trying to have fun and continue old and new hobbies, with cancer ever-present in the background of it all. At the end, the two of them observe the 2017 solar eclipse, and despite all the uncertainty that comes with the thought of another seven years, agree to watch the 2024 eclipse together too.

There are just about no cancer comics between that one and the most recent comic, the one I posted: Ten Years, written in 2020. It’s by far the most hopeful of the three in the little series: the two of them are happy, they’re playing with rabbits and riding on handcarts and going out hiking and stargazing, together. At the end, Ten Years breaks the format with a conversation in which they talk about how unbelievable it is that it’s been so long, and share their worries as well as their hopes. It even ends on a much more lighthearted joke about immortality.

It’s a good comic. Definitely in my top two comics wherein internet cartoonists express emotions about an illness suffered by their wife.

Simple example: when the term 'Person of Color' became the dominant way to describe 'everyone except white people' in the United States, within the next 5 years a shit ton of languages adopted a literal word-by-word translation of 'Person of Color' as their dominant way to describe 'everyone except white people'.

Was that the way the local racialized community wanted to describe themselves? Something that came organically from their own needs and experiences? FUCK NO. But no other term stood a chance in the storm of English-dominant media. And so a word that people use to describe something vital to their own lived experience, was shaped by the needs and priorities of Americans.

And the same is true for a word like 'transgender'. And when the US trans community started spreading 'they/them' as THE genderneutral pronoun, within the next 5 years trans communities in a shit ton of languages adopted the same two-plurals-we-already-use combination as their genderneutral pronoun. Was that what nonbinary people around the world wanted? FUCK NO. But no other pronouns stood a chance once English set the standard.

Meanwhile, many people, myself included, have had to learn their language to get higher education and jobs in our countries. For most degrees, even science-related ones, you need to be able to hold a full conversation in English fluently. You're studying attoms? You better know English. When it comes to getting jobs, those that don't demand it still favor employees who are fluent in English.

They don't need to learn any other language to access to higher education. But we have to learn theirs to go anywhere in our country.

For me the maternal side of his family is from Bahia, his Grandma migrated to RJ when his mom was young. (Though he never went to Bahia before meeting Donald)

His father is from Rio, from all way back, and is the one with the surname Carioca

He has a older sister, but she's like way older, probably +10 years difference

His granny(mom's side) is actually a ""witch"", or something like that. But just basic nature stuff. (If José knows any magic is debatable since he only shows in the first movie)

His mother died when young, and his dad is not the best

Not like abusive, but he really shouldn't have a child he is just kinda negligent? Like not caring too much to where Zé goes and stuff

His sister moves out of the house young too, like they probably didn't live together for long

He used to go to his granny house on weekends and was actually very attached to her. She dies, obviously

And he kindof grows up in the streets, making friends with Nestor, Pedrão and cia, having meals in their houses etc going back to a probably empty house etc etc (i think I'm making this too angsty, and I don't really like it that way, but c'mon he's poor, life isn't easy)

If his dad taught anything was to get out of work and kinda to scam people, he didn't taught how to be good at it tho.

He does to school tho, and there he learned he loves 2 things Music 🎶 and women Rosinha

I believe she is for real his first crush and starts with him young, so isn't about her money o something (idk if they have an actual first meeting in the comics tho)

They start dating as teens, her dad doesn't approve and they go on to have a not really stable relationship because he's kinda of a jerk and she is jealous

Now considering the movies Saludos Amigos & The Three Caballeros "canon" and that Zé story is set in the 40s. Here is how I think it goes

It's the middle/start of the war and some boats of the U.S Navy shows up in the coast of Rio, that's how he meets Donald!

He shows him the city, probably try to scam some money or whatever, but become actually really close after a night of drinks, and really good friends after some days . But Donald has to leave.

(also when I say scam some money I mean, getting him to pay for thing probably expensive and give it to José or something, maybe that's how they end up drinking)

Later, when Brazil is actually starting to entering the war he flees, somehow, maybe Rosinha pays for him idk (Rocha Vaz would definitely want him gone, but I think the war would be preferable oh well)

Seeing he really doesn't want to see the snake smoke, he ends up in Mexico and meets Panchito!

Their meeting is not as nice though, they compete after a girls love, threaten each other of death and stuff (canon comic) but they part away not really hating each other

After a while he is the US of A working (oh no) as a entertainer (hm ok) when he re-meets Donald and Panchito!! (They both met each other in battle of something, and got along nicely, Donald is dispatch by the navy at this point). Panchito and José make amends and thus the Three Caballeros is born! They absolutely become besties (or something more👀)

That last point is absolutely based on a comic by @polisena-art though. Great art by the way, be-au-ti-ful

Then the *movie* 3 caballeros happens, on Donald's Birthday, they travel to their respective countries. And finally Bahia!

They part ways and become pen pals

A lot after that though (and after others apparitions in animated stuff, if from other eras)

So, Zé's sister is pregnant by some guy, it's twins! Our favorite parrot now is tio. But they aren't actually together a lot, Zico and Zeca live with their mom and probably dad, only seeing Zé occasionally.

But something happens and he becomes their legal guardian. In my mind their mom was sick, so they start spending more time with him as her disease worsened until she die (why did this become angst again?)

He takes a while to find his footing, but all thing including he ends up a good parental figure to them.

He also reconnect (actually just connect I guess) with some distant family. Mostly his primos, who coincidentally also have Ze in the name

Now just some throwaway headcanons

In my vision the name os his sister is Ana, His parentes are Joca and Tereza, and his Grandma is Zelaide and his paternal Grandpa is Josué

Also in Saludos Amigos his greeting card reads "José C. Carioca" and I'ma gonna assume that's with Costa or Do Carmo. Which would be his mom surname I guess. Even if both of them ends up sounding like locations in pair with Carioca

He start smoking kinda young, and continued for a long time (mostly stress smoking) until he got guard on the kids, than he stopped

He absolutely has a soft spot for kids btw

His relationship w/ Rosinha don't go anywhere, a really on and off thing, that doesn't end up working. But they still love each other (platonically (mostly)) and are good friends

He considers Nestor basically an younger brother. And all of his friends as his family

He is very emotional about this bunt refuses to show it

Honestly he gets along great with Gladstone. I just think it's worth mentioning because they're really similar for the stress of Donald

He also does a lot of Drag, and that's canon I just think it's neat

For my lgbtq+ HCs. He's a "Caiu na vila o peixe fuzila" (Pan and Polyam), but depending on the decade and his age he might be closeted. Also GNC

He plays a lot of instruments, including: guitar, tambourine, concertina, umbrella, flute, accordion and trumpet

He's also really good imitating voices and noises (parrot, duh) and whistling

He can cook decently, but hates it. Unfortunately he's a guardian of two and can't go always eat dinner at Pedrão .

But he cooks with pleasure to the caballeros when they come. Or in especial occasions for everyone.

He's a really good artist with watercolor, pencils and at photography, but he doesn't do any of that often

And for the surprise of all he kinda likes studying, especially art, languages and music. No would guess by how he was at school

Not actually for him, bit I want to believe Zé Paulista name is José Paulo, and he's related to José dad's family side, along with Pampeiro and Queijinho

Where Baiano and Jandaia are related to his mother's (yes, this based purely by the location of the states)

And not really a headcanons but I just love the Three Cabs as a throuple it's just so cute

Also between the three of them he has the braincell™ but neither does he use it or have some common sense to pair with it (that one stays with Donald)

Also Don calls him Joe, while Panchito calls him Jose (hispanic accent™)

And Panchito it's the only one who he doesn't actually mind doing it, even if he doesn't correct the others

Also his eyes are a reddish brown (I hate the blue from the comics with a passion) also in a human AU he would be black, thank you very much

And that's kinda of it. I love this cartoon parrot so much it doesn't even make sense

Reasonable to maintain and possible to achieve

- inflatable dinosaur suit

- tattoo freckles on there to break up the shapes. cheaper than plastic surgery.

- undercut. not quite bald but maintainable at home

- second wig for if you get the angle like, really wrong one time. maybe gray. that was in style for a bit

- wear a scarf or kerchief or bow or smth on your hair

You said in a reblog that you work in visual arts, so I think there’s some real potential here for some wild hairstyles that you don’t have to upkeep because you just did like elaborate braids or Leia loops on a wig and then all you have to do most day is put it on your head.

If you’re willing to post a doodle of your general face shape, maybe we could crowdsource specifics, but I really like the braids that wrap all the way around the head on most people.

I skimmed the listing and it doesn't say if it comes furnished, but I have a feeling that it does come complete.

The key point in studies like this is that they always expect porn-related problems to go up as porn use goes up, and you would expect that because that's how every addiction works from gambling to cigarettes to alcohol to crack cocaine, but what they actually find is that the people with the most distress over their porn use is actually related to how religious they are, not how much porn they're watching. This is significant, because it means people who identify as "porn addicts" are not actually watching more porn than the average person; They just feel worse about it because they think they shouldn't be watching it AT ALL.

I really can't stress this point enough; Are there people whose lives are badly impacted by watching 22 hours of porn a day? Sure, they do exist and they have my sympathy, but the majority of cases of "porn addiction" are completely religiously motivated and have nothing to do with how much porn people are actually watching.

The key takeaway here is that shaming people for their sexuality is harmful. It's bad for people's mental health to make them feel shame over something they have no control over, like how horny they can get. It's wrong to force people to suppress their emotions and make them feel guilty for not harming anyone. As Drew of Genetically Modified Skeptic once said; You can't shame someone out of feeling horny any more than you can shame someone out of feeling hungry.
