Games from older consoles are being made less and less available to the point so much of the industry's history could easily vanish without
Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.
I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
trying to explain to tumblr that the Middle Class in not their enemy
saw someone say that someone complaining about only having 7k in savings makes them contemplate “doing something bad”
you know that 7k covers like. one hospital visit WITH insurance, right?
“people who make six figures shouldn’t be allowed to complain —“ most people who make six figures are, these days, solidly middle class. where i live, a combined household income of $110k is *lower middle class*.
“people who can afford homes —“ are typically 400-600k in debt for them. also if “can own your own home” is your threshold for the rich you are contemplating eating, i think you are genuinely stupid
“boohoo your investments dropped, stop complaining rich boy” idk how to tell you this but. most of us have a retirement account. you should probably open one
I've said some of this before, but I want to elaborate further:
There are privileges that should be given only to people who have earned them, but are sometimes even kept from those who did earn them, e.g. a driver's license, any professional license, awards of achievement, etc.
There are privileges nobody actually needs, but everybody should have access to, which are more properly called "luxuries", e.g. game consoles, fancy hats, craft supplies, a kayak, a premium vacation, etc.
There are privileges everybody should have, that life is much harder without, but not everyone actually does have, which is why they're called "privileges", e.g. convenience appliances, internet access, media access, financial stability, owning a home, retirement funds, etc.
There are basic rights everybody needs to survive, but not everybody does have, and that's a fucking crime e.g. adequate food, clean air and water, safe shelter, electricity, healthcare, etc.
And then there are privileges nobody should have, e.g. billionaires hoarding, amongst dozens, resources that could provide everything listed above to half the human population without depriving themselves of any of the same.
Seriously.
Nobody who will lose their only home if they stop working before retirement age is getting anywhere near what billionaires are doing to the world. These days, even people with several million dollars in equity aren't necessarily in a position to retire early, or own a second home, much less cause the kind of harm we're angry with the billionaires for.
There are three orders of magnitude between a millionaire and a billionaire, and now the world has a trillionaire.
Nobody who has an amount of money you can begin to imagine clearly is the problem.
more people need to be aware of the term alterous attraction (a desire for a close emotional connection with someone, but it's not completely romantic or platonic) and use it instead of calling everything a qpr. because by calling everything a qpr you are turning that term into a label instead of what it actually is - an umbrella term for many non conventional types of relationships.
a swirl of meringue

hello character who is desperate to be a good person; i want to play a game. in front of you is the one person you will never be able to save. you have the rest of your life to make peace with this. there are no defined repercussions if you fail, but we both know you're going to attempt to win regardless. your time starts now
don't worry about the fact it's just you and a mirror in the room.

always such a struggle when you get to the sex scene part of the fic you're writing and you're not horny at all. i don't know. their things were touching. without ANY underwear. the end.
I'm probably gonna get yelled at for saying this but sometimes something isn't a real problem in fandom, you just learned a Japanese word describing a general fandom practice and got scared and decided it meant "The Bad Ones" of that practice
Whenever you see someone being like "we don't mind when women enjoy or even create m/m content, we just hate fujoshis" you are being racist. If you mean "I hate the way some female fans treat gay men like fetish objects" then say that, and we can have a conversation based on that, but "fujoshi" is, I cannot stress this enough, just a word for any woman who likes M/M content, for better or worse. It may have started out as a reclaimed insult (by the way, the insult was based on "liking gay shit makes you perverted and sinful," not "please respect the humanity of gay men") but it does not make a distinction between The Good Ones and The Bad Ones. You just decided to No True Scotsman it and that the English word for that should describe The Good Ones and the Japanese word for it should describe The Bad Ones
Same goes for the people I saw just the other day whose discord server explicitly disallowed "Yaoi" but said that M/M content was allowed. What they meant was "M/M content is allowed as long as it isn't pornographic and fetishistic." What they actually said was "M/M content is allowed, but M/M content is strictly forbidden," and expected you to understand that the Japan-Adjacent term has porn/fetish connotations while the English-language term for THE SAME THING refers to the "normal, non-perverted" version.
It'd be like if you used the word "cartoons" to refer to all Family-Friendly animation, regardless of style or country of origin, whether it's Japanese or American or French or whatever, and used the term "anime" to refer to all animated pornography regardless of style or country of origin. There's plenty of animated pornography that isn't Japanese! There's plenty of anime that's not pornographic! But this is the sort of thing you do when you say shit like "obviously women can read stories about gay men, but NO FUJOSHIS"
OP is correct and smart for saying this. this is related to/a subset of how people are about non-fandom foreign words, too, like how people say "Christians worship God (good), Muslims worship Allah (bad and scary)" when gues swh. gu. guess what. gues s w hat Allah mea. guess what the word "Allah" means--!!
Sometimes I wish my friends would stop using “child predator” “pedophile” and “lolicon” interchangeably
Sometimes
Well, I wish they wouldn't *all the time*!
Wait is it bad for me and my partner to refer to ourselves as a couple of things?
We’re both nonbinary
not if youre both ok with it
it would be bad if you referred to OTHER nonbinary people that way because you don't know if they're ok with it
"there's no platonic explanation for this" oh so you think the characters are aplatonic too? how cool that we share the same headcanon! 😊 we should discuss—oh wait... you're just using that phrase because you can't see them as anything other than romantic ☹️ that should count as false advertising. don't get my hopes up like that again

Kind of cool that at least they’re all saying it out loud now, it was really obnoxious watching them hedge around the fact that they believe people AFAB are privileged over people AMAB
[Image description: a screenshot of a post by @/i-suggest-transfeminism with the underwater filter. anonymous asked, "I'm curious how you think nonbinary people fit into TME and TMA? bc AFAB nonbinary people still often act somewhat feminine." @/i-suggest-transfeminism responded with, "nonbinary people AFAB are TME, nonbinary people AMAB (including myself) are TMA. /end image description]
anyone else feeling rather... annoyed at the way ppl have come to define and use queerplatonic and qprs? So many times I see ppl talk abt qprs saying they're "friendship but Deeper" or "a relationship strictly between friendship and romance" or "essentially romance lite/romance for aromantics" and like. A qpr definitely can be all that if the participants want that, but to say that this is THE definition of queerplatonic is actually going directly against the very goal for which the term was created. Queerplatonic was supposed to give us a word to be able to talk about relationships that don't fit neatly into the "romantic" and "platonic" boxes, whilst also deconstructing the relationship hierarchy and the idea that friendships are fundamentally lesser than romantic relationships. So can we please stop using qprs as a way to once again make friendships seem like a lesser form of relationship and to reinforce the relationship hierarchy? Please?
Afaik the original definition of a qpr was smth along the lines of "a relationship that doesn't fit the traditional boundaries of a friendship". By that definition? A loveless friendship would be a qpr. A "friendship" between two aplatonics would be a qpr. A friendship where they specifically feel less emotionally connected to one another than is expected of a "normal" friendship would be a qpr. Just like how queerness isn't fundamentally about love, queerplatonicism, i.e. queering the platonic, isn't fundamentally about "putting more love" into friendships. It can be, but it doesn't have to be.
