On Saturday I said to my partner, as I have said for months, "A ten thousand dollar a year raise would solve so many of my problems."
As of this morning I was reluctantly looking for jobs because I love my job and don't want to leave it, but see: $10k raise problem solver.
As of noon today this was no longer an issue, because my boss called me with the news that I was getting a $10K merit raise.
I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This is roughly $200 extra per paycheck. Enough to pay off debt faster, rebuild my savings, and spend a weekend a month in Milwaukee getting obscenely laid. The sex I'm going to have on $200 extra per paycheck. You can't even.
May all of you get the $10K raise your soul has yearned for. And whatever level of sex you can be satisfied with for $200.
hey bestie i think ur post might be charmed 'cause you aren't gonna fuckin believe what happened today
Sandra Bullock on the Muppet Show
Science fiction is full of first contact stories, but is there a such thing as LAST contact?Ā Decide exactly what that means, and write about it.
It was too late, when the humans came. They were a young species, still exploring outwards, vital and thriving.Ā
We⦠were not.Ā
War had ravaged us, and sickness, and war once again, until our population dwindled beyond the point of recovery. We struggled against that, of course⦠we used genetic manipulation, and cloning, and even more desperate measures. None succeeded. When the humans came, we were sinking into apathy, only a few tens of us left. We had begun to discuss whether we should commit a mass suicide, or simply wait to fade away.Ā
And then the young species came, in their clumsy ships, and they asked us why we were so few.Ā
āWe are becoming extinct,ā we told them.Ā āWe have passed the point of recovery.āĀ
It is custom to avoid the races that are dying ā once a species reaches the point of inevitable extinction, even war is suspended, and the fiercest enemy pulls back. The custom was born of plagues and poisons that could be carried forth from a dying world to afflict a healthy one, but it has the implacable weight of tradition now. After we are gone, after they have waited for the prescribed period of quarantine, there will be a fight for our world. Habitable worlds are few, and this is a good one, with plenty of free groundwater and thriving vegetation. It is a bitter thing to be grateful for the custom that allows us to die in peace, but we are grateful.
But the humans donāt know that custom, and they do not leave. They seem distraught, when we tell them we are dying, and try to offer their aid - but their technology is behind ours, and it is too late. When they realize that they canāt save us, though, they do something that bewilders us.Ā

I'm working on a client report and my CEO looked over it and asked how made it. I asked him if he meant, like, the graphs and he said "No this whole thing is really nice with the text and the images put together so well. Did you use an AI tool or something to arrange it like a book?" And I just have him kind of blank look and said "No, I've been doing print layout and design for twenty five years. I'm building this as a template we can use with other clients that will just need images dropped in. And the graphs are all screenshots from tools we already use."
And then he gave me kind of a blank look and said "Okay, that is. Very good to know."
I suspect I've unexpectedly solved a problem that I was unaware of.
For the record: the CEO *hates* AI and nobody else at the company has any experience with InDesign.
The deal is that we just fired a member of the executive team who had been asking our practice leads to put together scorecards each month so that he could put together 20-slide powerpoints to go over data that he didn't understand particularly well. The scorecards were taking up at least 10% of each practice lead's time with work that we couldn't bill to the client, the clients thought the presentations were confusing, and the CEO tasked me with putting together three slides for each client and leading those parts of the meetings.
I built a dashboard in our PSA that collected most of that data, have collected links to the info that the practice leads gathered so I can screenshot it for each presentation, and totally on my own because i like data and design i decided it would be a good idea to create a client report "book" with the data we were presenting before and insights from the trends over time in case the clients asked about the info that was no longer in the presentations that i can share with the clients after the meetings along with answers to any questions they asked me in the meeting that i needed to dig into.
So I basically freed up about 100 billable hours a month (six practice leads at four hours a week) for our T3 techs and apparently also alerted the CEO to the fact that I was not fucking around about professional design skills so he is no longer looking for a contractor to do our client education materials all while costing decidedly less than $120k a year.
So I'm not really worried that he's going to take credit or that I'm making myself replaceable with the templates, I'm mostly worried that I'm setting myself up to make more work for myself, but realistically doing it this way saves me time over the way the former exec had me doing it so really I'm just annoyed that this means they're going to make me go to more meetings.
Everyone thinks I'm very funny in meetings because I am but also because my "I have an infodump prepared on that topic if you'd like to drink from the firehose" face is very obvious to our team and it is apparently amusing to watch both me and the clients when I'm given the opportunity to, like, talk about password managers or server licensing models or access control protocols.
Also apparently I'm better at live data lookup than anyone was aware of until they started watching me do it in meetings? I don't know if that's because I'm better at using our RMM than the people who lead the meetings or if it's because I can recognize the part number, serial number, and processor model patterns of desktops and servers from major manufacturers for the last fourteen years on sight so i don't *have* to go digging in the records to figure out when something was purchased i can just tell you what year the processor was released and if the serial number was late or early into that model year because I know it off the top of my head.
Which I did not realize that other people at the company didn't know also until they started including me on lease replacement meetings.
totally not bragging at all
Why would I not brag? I went from feeling like an exhausted failure banging my head against broken processes in a job i hated in February to having half my coworkers and my whole management team look at me like I'm doing arcane magic when I do something that's easy for me in April.
It has been very weird to see what "normal" is for the rest of the team since I'm no longer isolated in procurement but it has also been very gratifying for coworkers who thought I was stupid or flaky to understand that I'm not, i was just ill-suited to my former role and burned out after doing it for over a decade.
Also i did my time in the product mines - i was genuinely surprised that people didn't know about the processor lines and serial numbers (literally some of the serial numbers encode the manufacturing date, this is tremendously handy to know, I figured everyone already knew that) and such so after gaining that knowledge while kicking and screaming its nice that the team knows that the project leads don't have to do a bunch of tedious research (it is *annoyingly common* for computer manufacturers to make it hard to find the manufacture date or look up warranty start date by serial) and they can just give me a spreadsheet and i can get them estimates accurate to the year by looking at a couple data points we already have.
Ideally the database I'm working on will use APIs to collect this info in the future but for now API stands for "Alli Probably knows It."
*releases pack of dads into home depot* goā¦ā¦be free
invasive species encroach on lesbian territory
This is a common misconception because theyāre such similar environments, but you should be aware that dads are native to Home Depot, while lesbians are actually native to Loweās. At this point, however, both dads and lesbians have made themselves at home in both Home Depot and Loweās to the point that trying to separate them back into their original ranges would probably do more harm than good to the delicate ecosystem of large chain hardware stores.
A properly raised and socialized Dad will be perfectly comfortable cohabiting with Lesbians. Its not reallyĀ āencroaching on anotherās territoryā. You wouldnāt say that about foxes in a forest that also homes bobcats, would you? No. Itās just two different species that have both evolved to live in similar/the same environment. As long as they recognize each other as equals, Dads and Lesbians are more than capable of cohabitation.
Now, if you were to release a pack of Lumberjacks into a Lowes or Home Depot, thatās where chaos will reign. Being adapted to a far harsher and more demanding environment, the Lumberjacks would simply push Dads and Lesbians both out and also consume far more than a sustainable amount of resources. It would be like releasing bears at a country club.
As a former timber-harvester⦠I feel this is potentially accurate in theory. But highly improbable in actuality.
Lumberjacks, like most megafauna species generally require more space than the average hardware store, even a big box store could provide. The misconception is that Lumberjacks are a social species because of how they often work and live together.
This is a matter of necessity, not preference, and a survival technique for thriving under the LogBoss.
A āpackā of Lumberjacks, if not under the environmental pressure of a LogBoss will naturally disperse until they each have a wide territory.
Lumberjacks rarely fight for territory.
One on one, a Lumberjack could drive out a Dad or Lesbian, however the latter tend to travel in social packs.
Lumberjacks will passively retreat on the presence of large numbers of people. Kind of like Sasquatch.
Getting a āpackā of Lumberjacks assembled would be hard enough unless they were forced into a Hardware Store by a LogBoss. In that case, they would already be in a heightened and potentially agitated state far above their natural behavior. This artificial scenario can be likened to a circus animal running amok. If it had been in the wild, the incident would not have occurred.
Free-roaming Lumberjacks are the cryptids of the Hardware ecosystem. They are surprisingly quiet and unobtrusive.
Please stop labeling Lumberjacks as dangerous roving social predators. They are intermediate level omnivores and remarkably peaceful unless threatened.
As a hardware store worker I can say that this is all 100% accurate.
now how in the FUCK am i supposed to leave tumblr when a god tier post like THIS is just is just waiting for me daily?!?!?!
question where does theĀ āart studentā orĀ āDIYerāĀ ācrafterā or āsoap makerā or āminiaturistā etc. who has ventured into the store for supplies fall into the ecosystem/what is their impact of said ecosystem?
Most of the above are native to craft and hobby stores (art students, historically, are native to museums, but having been introduced to hobby stores, have found a niche for themselves and thrived), but all can be seen in hardware stores on occasion due to territorial overlap. They are generally low-impact, as they tend to stick to specific small areas and primarily utilize different resources.Ā While a large group of any of them can be disruptive (art students, in particular, are known to travel in packs), in general, they are more likely to have territorial disputes with one another than with the local fauna.Ā
A point of clarity -ācrafterā is a bit misleading; while it conjures a specific image, much likeĀ āfishā orĀ āreptileā it actually covers a broad array of wildly disparate species, and in general, more descriptive nomenclature is preferred. Fiber artists in particular are a genus to watch out for, particularly in groups. Beware a roving pack of domesticated quilters. They fear nothing, will go anywhere, and due to their social nature, will often seek interaction from other species that thrive best in solitude. They are quite friendly, and will happily adopt members of other species; the concern is that their adoptees do not always wish to be adopted.Ā
#in search of taxonomic precision and peaceful coexistence (via welkinalauda)
I do wonder how lesbian/bisexual lumberjack-mimickry fits into this
I can say as a former craft store worker that if you wish to see true fear, look into the eyes of a Dad who must venture into a craft store. Despite the overlap of familiar beings known to him from his native hardware store habitat, Dads are instinctively aware that craft stores are not for them; they contain unfamiliar perils and even the seemingly familiar may have strange variances and unnerving secrets. (āWhy is this airbrush so small? What do you mean nails, why would you⦠WUT!!ā)
Only experienced silverbacks or the boldest young Dads dare venture into a craft store for long without his mate or offspring to keep roving Craft Ladies at bay and guide him in this strange ecosystem. If a Dad enters with his mate and is separated from her, he will often scuttle for the seeming familiarity of Woodcrafts, Models, or Paints (the latter not to be confused with Fine Arts, unquestioned territory of art students), but he eyes Scrapbooking and Jewelry with trepidation and will usually venture into those exotic areas only in the company of females of his pack.
Lumberjacks are rarely spotted entering craft stores of their own volition, for while they do not fear it as Dads do, they know it is an environment unsuited for megafauna such as themselves.
Hardware store Lesbians generally adapt more easily to craft stores, although they may enlist another Lesbian of a subspecies more adapted to that environment to guide them until they find their niche. Lesbians have even been known to seek the aid of a Craft Lady, a native fauna that share similarities with Lesbians but are usually smaller and nimbler to suit their chosen habitat. Dads who witness this are often awed by the Lesbiansā temerity, for although larger, Dads are generally wary of the cunning and dexterous Craft Ladies and may mistake their enthusiastic pack greetings as predatory swarming.
Craft Ladies, secure in their ecological niche, have no fear of interlopers and take the presence of non-native beings in stride, although they may become territorial about scarcer resources.
The only truly invasive species that threaten craft stores are Brides-to-Be, who are mere annoyances individually, but like locusts may descend in hordes and lay waste, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Fortunately for the Craft Ladies, Brides-to-Be are seasonal and usually only a threat in the spring and early summer.
It Got Better
Is anybody going to address the newly invasive species of BuJo enthusiasts into the craft store/art supply store environment? Why arenāt we talking about the dangerous proliferation of Leuchtturm 1917s and the growing threat of Dotted Moleskins? I had to liberate a Dad from a tangle of washi tape in the art supply store the other day and it wasnāt pretty.
The natural habitat of journalers was stationary stores, which have been replaced by office supplies stores, not the same. Journalers invade the craft stores and art supplies stores to get the markers and washi tape and Sakura pens they require for survival.
@great-art-and-a-purple-tongue @onbearfeet THE LORE HAS BEEN UPDATED.
VERY IMPORTANT AND ENTIRELY ACCURATE now excuse me I gotta hit Lowes and Michaels.
Another thing to note is all of those habitats must adapt to the seasonal migration of goths. As soon as the faintest hint of spooky can be detected at those stores, goths will arrive in packs. A small pack of goths determined to forage can strip the shelves of a seasonal section bare in 30 minutes.
Too important not to reblog
I for one stand in fascinated trepidation to see how the major habitat destruction wrought by the loss of JoAnn Fabric will impact the greater ecosystem.
SCAdians can often be found in any of these environments, and while they do not necessarily travel in packs outside their native lekking grounds, they are gregarious and are not in fact one species but a colony of cordyceps-symbiotic Crafters, Goths, Dads, Lesbians, Cosplayers, etc. that are directed by the cordyceps inhabiting them to find others to pull into the āSocietyā. This particular symbiotic fungi, c. recreatoris, causes hosts to behave similarly to Historical Re-enactors, but SCAdians tend to create their own internally consistent timeline of events taking place in a shared world, whereas Re-enactors are a species of Museum animal.
I wish to address the percasive rumors directly: the loss of JoAnnās happened prior to and was not in any way caused by the annual Goth feeding cycle. Notwithstanding that much like cicadas and locusts, the craft store ecosystem evolved to handle and even rely on this phenomen, it simply had no relation to this unfortunate occurrence. While there remains some debate on the subject, the immediate cause seems to have been a disease which hit the elderly crafters on whom JoAnnās relied the hardest.
The loss of the JoAnnās feeding grounds has been devastating to the Goth population, and conservation efforts are ongoing.
Here, take this battle shrimp. One could say you've found your knight in brining armorš¦
