fucked up how no matter how much literature you read thereās always literature that you havenāt read. and in fact thereās literature that you CANT read because itās āonly published in a language you donāt readā or āit is translated but every translation is straight up bullshitā or āitās no longer extantā or something stupid like that and so itās always going to be literature youāve never read. you canāt read it all. sick n twisted
Oh, don't give up hope.

"Absolutely no one comes to save us but us."
Ismatu Gwendolyn, "you've been traumatized into hating reading (and it makes you easier to oppress)", from Threadings, on Substack [ID'd]
HEY wanna read but annoyed on where to find copies of books?
Here's an archive with millions of PDFs of books and papers and magazines and essays and stuff.
I've been looking for such archives, thanks
i was not going to publish this essay because i donāt like to yell but here the fuck i am.
the first link broke, here you go
BEGGING us to read nonfiction every now and then. Like. Words on page. It doesn't have to be the only thing you do, but you gotta keep in practice with it. No easier people to subjugate than those who question nothing they're told.
thank you ao3 for being an archive and not an algorithm. thank you for letting me like things without consequences, thank you for being free with no ads, thank you for having lawyers to defend our freedom of speech. thank you tag wranglers. thank you to all authors and thank you ao3
your weird obsession with moral purity is degrading your critical thinking skills and poisoning your ability to empathize with other people btw
your weird obsession with moral purity is degrading your critical thinking skills and poisoning your ability to empathize with other people btw
#why those things specifically ššš
For the same reason Godwin's law exists. They weaponize rape and incest [and usually also pedopihlia] to make an unwinnable argument.
If you call your opponent a pedophile, who is gonna speak up that maybe you're wrong? That clearly just means they're a pedophile, too.
It also means nothing the person ever said can be correct - not even whether sky is blue, because you don't want to besaying the same things a pedophile said, do you?
It's the same ideaology as TERFs obsessing over 'evil trannies sneaking into bathrooms to rape little girls', or 'icky prochoicers using abortion as birth control'. They lap an extreme people are uncomfortable discussing, let alone arguing, and pretend that means they wont the discussion.
I've been saying this in discussions around censorship for years.
When you say "all censorship is bad" and someone retorts "What about incest?" or "what about rape content?" they are trying to rhetorically back you into a corner where you cede your argument, not because you've been convinced or gained a new perspective, but because they're intimidating you with the prospect of social backlash.
once you cede your argument in any way (say, with fictional incest) fascists have their foot in the door.
once you cede that one kind of fiction is evil, fascists will take that same logic and apply it to everything else.
this is "think of the children" pearl clutching about trans and queer folk, D&D, video games, etc etc etc. it's weaponized fascism and you're falling for it by moralizing fiction and policing thoughts.
this doesn't mean you can have personal taste or triggers, that we shouldn't age-restrict things, tag them with warnings, or think critically about how we (individuals and society) ingest media. that doesn't mean disregarding the fact that fiction can affect reality.
it just means acknowledging the fact that you can't know a person's thoughts. all fiction can be harmless and good for something, for someone, somewhere. instead of letting fear and disgust drive your reaction, flex that empathy and sympathy and reconcile that there are minds out there that you don't understand--and that doesn't make them evil.
Funny thing about that last reblog: it's censored. The original quote uses "sons-of-bitches," not "scoundrels."

Look, it's simple. If a person has to actively work to make money, they're not "the rich" and they're not the problem. A surgeon making $200k a year still stops making money if they stop showing up to do surgery, because they're still selling their labor. The radical discrepancies in how we value different skills are certainly a problem, but the guy who makes money when he doesn't even get out of bed is the one making money on the value of other people's labor.
No, seriously, do NOT.
Feeling dirty and grimy for extended periods of time is extremely draining on the mental well-being of humans. Psychological studies prove it is detrimental to our self-esteem and contentment. And no wonder; we are animals--homo sapiens, a kind of ape--that instinctively places high importance on personal grooming. Like monkeys and cats and birds in a zoo, one of the best ways to make us feel sad ... is to make us feel gross to ourselves.
So here's an easy saying from my therapist/zookeeper:
"If you feel like you hate the world, eat something.
If you feel like the world hates you, get some sleep.
If you feel like you hate yourself, take a shower.
You will probably feel much better."
Do all three at once to become the perfect life form
Whoa! Is this where @redgoldsparks ā comic comes from?

i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
this is not a drag on fanfiction but if you find yourself consistently saying āwow fic is better than most published stuff!! and itās free!!ā it might be a sign that your brain is ready for and craving more complicated literature than the books you are used to gravitating towards
do yall even like. try.
Iāve read fanfics that are better than some published novels. Iāve read published novels that are better than some fanfics. Iāve read books that do some things I like better and some things I like worse, and ditto with fanfics. This post is blatantly not saying āstop reading fanficā or āfanfic is bad,ā itās saying āthere is a much bigger world of literature out there than the books you are comparing your fanfics to and you will probably enjoy those more complicated novels better than the novels you are currently reading.ā
a while ago I read this sci-fi short story from the 50s where a guy is kidnapped and interrogated by aliens using a very sophisticated lie detector, but he realizes that the lie detector works off technical truth, and with some careful phrasing and misdirection, he manages to make them believe that humans are a race of immortal, overpowered, omniscient telepathic beings. and it works.
my favorite part is when he tells them that humans are "capable of transportation without the aid of spaceships or any vehicles, just by using mental power to control physical matter". it's true, we can. it's called walking.
okay I found it, it's The Best Policy by Randall Garrett
and it has other gems such as "I know beyond a shadow of a doubt what every member of my race thinks of you" (they don't know you exist) and "every human knows exactly as much about the location of your home planet as I do" (nothing)
ok so for those of you who donāt know, thereās this twitter account of a japanese hero mascot named dentman who went viral recently due to this tweet
but yeah he saw the tweet. and his response went viral as well (which is how i found his account)
and he just has like. hourly posts reminding you to brush your teeth
oh and his rival? his name is mr. mutans. whenever dentman posts he makes a post of his own, ofc
but THATāS NOT ALL. literally while making this post i found a THIRD ACCOUNT thatās all about taking your meds
safe to say iām losing my mind
anyway the point of all this was that people are ALREADY beginning to draw them ship art š
and the reactions are everything
I CANT ADD ANY MORE IMAGES BUT TRUST ME THIS IS SO FUNNY one of the replies said āso candy guy is into it but
toxic one-sided dentman yaoi wasnāt on my 2024 bingo card but it DEFINITELY IS NOW!
UPDATE: dentman has a bunch of old youtube videos with a whole vtuber avatar iām in tears
i love u dentman
Animated another scene! Also from chapter 4 of deltarune...

"I wish we met sooner" is such a gentle sentiment. I love you so much I not only want you in my future, but in my past too. I want to have known you when we were small stupid kids, have held hands together as we played outside. I want to have stressed out over exams together, nudging a mug of still steaming hot chocolate against your elbow to get you to focus. I want to have told you I love you before I did anyone else. I want to have held you in my arms when all those sad memories you describe to me were still fresh wounds. I want my past to have been full of you, and full of meaningful memories with you. I want my past lives to have been spent with you, whether as two lovers, or two housecats cuddling by the fireplace on a snowy day, or two flowers that just happened to bloom on the same day, next to each other. I want to have consumed your existence and intertwined it with my own since my birth, never to be separated from you for a moment. I want to have loved you throughout it all, for all time.

Running into this on my dash was like running into an old friend
Thats just what theater kids are like
What Iāve always loved about this bit is
a. this musical number comes completely out of nowhere, with no greater context than what this video captures; and
b. the language instructor clearly canāt hear the music. Heās not from Musical Theatre Land. From his perspective, a couple of twinkle-toed weirdos just randomly decided to physically abuse him for three solid minutes. This isnāt reading anything thatās not intended into the scene ā itās literally the central gag.
@thebibliosphere in case you need some ridiculous Singinā in the Rain on your dash.
(P.S. I imagined you making the faces at the instructor and it was hilarious)
I can but aspire to the level of expressiveness Cosmo Brown has with his face.
