A Parade of Horribles by Matt Dinniman read by Jeff Hayes
Carl and Donut have made it to the 10th floor, which is a series of seven races, first against NPC teams and then against other crawlers. In every race, something immediately goes wrong in a way that started to get a bit repetitive. I'm still very dedicated to these characters, especially Donut, Carl, Prepitente, Imani, and Ellie, but unfortunately this was my least favorite volume of the series so far. The 11th floor showdown was epic, but a twist at the very end promises to be extremely irritating in the next book. The game AI is also starting to pull back the curtain, which lead to a lot of lore dumping at the end of this book, and the line between what is magic and what is technology is getting so blurry at this point. I hope Matt Dinniman can land this one, because I want to finish the series, but much of this book was a slog for me.
Tamon’s B-Side vol 3 by Yuki Shiwasu translated by Amanda Haley
I'm still enjoying that Utage and Tamon are both equally nuts and equally obsessed with each other, but Tamon does make a threat of "stay dedicated to me or I'll die" in this volume which it pretty yikes. You gotta be willing to accept some intense and dysfunctional relationship stuff if you want to read this series!
A Mouthful of Dust by Nghi Vo read by Cindy Kay
Another quick and enjoyable installment in the Singing Hills cycle- this one sees cleric Chih and their companion, the memory spirit bird Almost Brilliant, traveling to an area that saw terrible famines 20 or so years ago. The hardship and deprivation of that time still haunts the town, especially the house of the governor, which is oppressed by the ghost of a terrible deal struck in desperation. Less complex than some of the earlier books but still satisfying.
A Long and Speaking Silence by Nghi Vo read by Cindy Kay
This book goes back in time to cleric Chih's first months of traveling away from the Singing Hills Abbey, when they were younger and much less confident of their skills as a monk, interviewer, and chronicler. Chih arrives in a river town just in time for a rainy season festival, but the celebratory mood is undercut with uglier feelings as boats of refugees arrive from the sea. The townspeople already tell a narrative of the islanders as lazy, dirty, and dishonest- even though many of them are decedent from previous immigrant or refugee waves. This volume spins closer to social commentary than is usual for this series but there is still a family mystery to be uncovered, a secret to be found, and relationships to be built.
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
As a child, Kissen's whole family was sacrificed to a fire god, in a world in which gods grow in power as they get more prayers and offerings from humans. Now she lives in a country which has outlawed all gods, and she hunts down and kills those which still linger around their broken shrines. Then she encounters the strangest god she has ever known- a small god of white lies tied to a child, Inara, the daughter of a minor noble. Then Inara's family is also killed in a fire, deliberately set by unknown political enemies. Kissen takes Inara and her parasite god under her wing, hoping she can figure out how to separate them. Most of this book is a journey which these unexpected travel companies take towards a haunted and destroyed sacred city where more powerful gods still hold court. There was a lot to enjoy here, including an interesting magic system and good disability rep in a queernormative fantasy world. The thing that knocked a few points off for me is that the book seemed to rush a bit from event to event, not letting enough time to pass on the journey to build up to full steam. But I still enjoyed this a lot and will definitely pick up the sequels.
Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine edited by Lisa Diedrich and Briana Martino
I must say at the top of this review that I wrote one of the chapters in this book (on the comics term "Non-adjacent Sequence") so I am somewhat biased in my review. But I thought this was an excellent overview of the field of graphic medicine. Reading through the chapters and noting which texts (Stitches by David Small, The Bad Doctor by Ian Williams, Mom's Cancer by Brian Fies, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, Marbles by Ellen Forney for example) and which theorists (Ian Williams, Hilary Chute, MK Czerwiec among many others) are referenced over and over will help generate an excellent list for further reading. The sections (on Practice, Pedagogy, Process, Personal/Autobiographical and Political) help guide many of the different ways authors are thinking of comics about health and illness, the different ways thinkers are interpreting and using them either in the medical field, as literature, as personal catharsis, as public education, and more.
Haikyu!! Vol 35 by Haruichi Furudate translated by Adrienne Beck
Kenma is doing everything he can to limit Hinata's ability to score in this second set of the match between Karasuno and Nekoma. And then pouting that Hinata is less interesting to play against. Some really great spreads in this volume!
Mom’s Cancer, Anniversary Edition by Brian Fies
This autobiographical story began as an anonymous webcomic, in which Brian Fies documented his family struggling to support his mother through a stage four lung cancer diagnosis. Brian and his two sisters rally to his mother's side, driving her to many appointments, sitting with her during chemo sessions, going through the emotional highs and lows. I was very glad to finally pick up this book, and specifically the anniversary edition, which contains an epilogue Fies drew updating the story as well as multiple forwards and afterwards. This is a slim book, just 140 small sized pages, and yet this book helped launch the field of graphic medicine (comics about illness, recovery, doctors, patients, and the healthcare system) as we know it today. It won the first ever Eisner in the Web Comics category. A lot has changed in the world of comics since 2006, and especially in the world of memoir, autobiography, and graphic medicine, and some of that can be attributed to this small but mighty book.
Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
In a future America that feels only about three fascism steps away from our current one, incarcerated people in private prisons can join the Criminal Action Penal Entertainment program: a televised murder game in which they fight each other to the death in hopes of winning their freedom. This multi-faceted novel follows many characters including multiple participants in the CAPE program, fighting and supporting each other through reality entertainment death matches, other people incarcerated in normal prisons, rabid fans of watching "hard action sports", protestors trying to get the program outlawed, show runners, sports commentators, board members, doctors. There was a period in the middle of the novel in which I felt like maybe there were too many POV characters, but then they all started to intersect with each other in really satisfying ways towards the end. This is a brutal novel, a speculative examination of how the death penalty, solitary confinement, and the justice system are already used today, and how they disproportionately impact people of color, especially Black people, in America. The book is hopeful about the power of protesting, but very pessimistic about social change that counters capitalism or towards restorative justice. It's a very gripping read, and I definitely recommend it especially if you've read other dystopian murder game series like The Hunger Games or Dungeon Crawler Carl- this book has a lot more of substance to say.
Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice From My Bipolar Life by Ellen Forney
This book serves as an educational sequel or companion to Ellen Forney's memoir, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me (published 6 years earlier). It's a very easy to read, practical, digestible guide to balancing mental health flares especially mood disorders. It covers tips and tricks for getting good sleep, finding the right therapists, keeping track of meds, finding support groups, seeing red flags of approaching mania or depression and addressing them before it's a crisis, meditation, mindfulness, and more. Forney is excellent at laying out information in a clear and visually pleasing way, making this self-help guide an enjoyable read. Some of the information is specific to bipolar disorder, but other pieces are relevant to many other types of mental health questions and general emotional balance.
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
This book is so quiet that it multiple times managed to sneak up and ambush me with its humor or its depth of sorrow and regret. The plot, set into words, sounds slim: a butler who has served his whole career in a grand English house goes on a short driving holiday to visit an old friend. The present day of the story is set in 1956, when the old lord has died and the house has been sold to a rich American. The butler, Mr Stevens, comes with the house as "part of the package", and it is his new American employer who urges the butler to take a few days off to see the country. Woven through the journey are many flashbacks and memories as Mr Stevens reflects on conversations and incidents from the mid 1920s to the present, especially the years just before and after WWII. It feels superfluous to call this a great novel when it's already won the Booker Prize, been adapted to film, and definitely contributed towards the author winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. But it is! The narration is so understated and mild-mannered, but I was hooked all the way through and kept wanting to read just a few more pages before bed.

Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.
This article specifically notes:
For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.
GDID is the persistent Windows ID that helped FBI trace a Scattered Spider hacker despite VPNs. Here's how it works and how to limit it.

What has researchers uneasy is everything else the case reveals. Costin Raiu, a well-known malware researcher, asked on the Three Buddy Problem podcast how much of this exists on other platforms, and whether it is linked more permanently to hardware. Matthew Hickey, another security researcher, called Windows “surveillance software”.
Two things back that up:
There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.

It would also cut funding from schools unless they require “parental consent before changing a minor's gender markers, pronouns, or preferred name on any school form.” HR 2616 HAS ALREADY PASSED IN THE HOUSE! Please call your Senators to say NO ON HR 2616!

HR 8705 threatens to cut federal funding from public schools which teach “discriminatory equity ideology or gender ideology,” as defined by two Executive Orders aimed at suppressing “critical race theory” and trans representation. This bill is named after the late far-right activist Charlie Kirk, “The Charlie Act.” HR 8705 has passed out of committee, but has not yet been introduced in the House. Please call your House Reps to say NO ON HR 8705!

HR 7661 threatens to cut federal funding from public schools which offer material deemed “sexually oriented," treating any LGBTQIA+ identity as sexual content. It specifically forbids “gender dysphoria or transgenderism,” and “lascivious dancing” (drag). This bill, titled “Stop the Sexualization of Children Act,” has 22 co-sponsors and has passed out of committee but has not yet been introduced to the House. Please call your House Reps to say NO ON HR 7661!

If you don't know who your Senators or Representatives are, you can use Ballotpedia's Who Represents Me tool! (Note: there's a field for you to input your email address on their page, but it's not necessary to get your results. They just need a mailing address to confirm who your reps are.)
Once you've got names, you can look up and save your Reps' phone numbers in your phone. I find this makes it easier when I'm wavering about feeling brave enough to place a call. Just pressing a button instead of going and looking up the phone number all over again makes it just a liiiiittle easier, and sometimes that makes the difference between calling and not calling!
I appreciate that the infographics here are marked with a date! (6/10/26), because posts like these circulate for a long time, and I think it's helpful if exact dates are given so that people know what the status of the bill is at the time this was posted or reblogged, and whether it is at a point where the recommended action is still useful or not. It's also good to let folks know where they can easily check on the status of bills like this. (These links also have the full text of the bills available for reading, if that is your thing.)
For example:
HR 2616 (Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act) unfortunately passed the House on 5/20/26 (as mentioned in the infographic). It was received by the Senate on 5/21: "Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions".
8 Democrats joined the Republicans in voting to pass this bill in the House. Had they not, the bill would still have passed (D206 to R209). But it's still worth it, if you are one of their constituents, to give them hell about it and tell them how strongly you do not want to see them vote for the other bills mentioned here (info from govtrack.us):
Cleo Fields (LA-6), Laura Gillen (NY-4), Donald Davis (NC-1), Marcy Kaptur (OH-9), Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34), Eugene Vindman (VA-7), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-3).
At this time, there is no info that I can find that says exactly when the next steps in the Senate will take place.
Here are the Members of the committee on HELP (oh my god...). If your senator is on there, you might want to concentrate on contacting them at this time. It's possible this bill could be killed in committee.

Tuesday, July 28, 6pm- I'll be talking about OPTING OUT at People's Book in Takoma Park, MD! This event is free and open to the public, though you can RSVP here to give the bookstore a sense of the audience headcount. I'll be in conversation with Sarah Peitzmeier. We are still trying to figure out if we can get Lucky to attend on zoom or something, since they won't be present in person for this event. I will bring some of my zines to sell at the shop, so if you'd like a copy of The Nonbinary Bunny I will have that and some of my other self-published work. I'm also happy to sign copies of GENDER QUEER or BREATHE!
