So, I’m doing my rewatch and I’m wrapping up season 2. Which used to be my favorite, but it’s becoming more and more troubling for me.
So, near the end of 210 and Scott encounters Gerald at the police station. And he’s indignant: “What are you doing here? Its not supposed to be like this.” then “I did everything you asked. I joined Derek’s pack. I got you the information you wanted. I told you Matt was controlling the Kanima.”
Gerald sends him away and Scott walks down the hall, past Derek, who’s hiding around a corner and clearly heard everything.
And his face- its just completely shut down. It didn’t strike me until now how deep Scott’s betrayal went. The fact that Derek had thought that he was winning Scott over, that they could be brothers, that he had just saved Scott’s life. And it was all at Gerald’s bidding.
Now, Derek is anything but stupid, and he knows Gerald pushed Kate, made her into a person who could do what she did. He know how flat out evil Gerald is. And to have Scott, a werewolf, to be working for him, after Peter just used him to resurrect himself.
I’m frankly amazed he didn’t just grab the betas and leave town. I would have been so tempted to just say ‘Fuck off, Beacon Hills.”He’s got money. He doesn’t have to stay there. And yet, he is. He’s still trying to stop the Kanima. He’s still trying to save people.
I almost wish he did leave. Because in just a few nights, Scott’s going to force him to give the bite- what he believes to be a gift- to that bastard Gerald.
No one suffers like Derek Hale, and he just. Keeps. Going. He’s nothing short of amazing to me.
I just realized something. When did Scott know Matt was controlling the Kanima? When did he tell Gerard??
He knew when they saw Matt thrown into the pool at Lydia’s during Party Guested. Immediately afterwards, they saw Matt and Jackson (Kanima form) on the street, then they went to Stiles’s house and told the Sheriff, who took them to the station where they examined the evidence.
Now, while all this was happening, Victoria (and Chris) killed herself, and then Allison went to the hospital and met with Chris. Then she came home and got the letter from Gerald and had her break down.
And then they got the text from Scott that Derek was there and they needed the bestiary, which Matt made them send. The Argents and crew saddled up and went to station and all hell broke loose.
So, Scott did send the one text. But I’m wondering if he sent one earlier that no one knew about.
It sounds like he might have! The more I examine Scott the less I like him, he really treated Derek like shit and he truly did some awful things.
Scott’s treatment of Derek is season 2 is nothing short of appalling.
Derek ran into a room filled with violently poisonous Wolfbane and dragged Scott’s ass out, and how does Scott end the season:
You might be an Alpha, but you’re not mine.
Fuck you, Scott. Seriously. Just fuck you.
Tell me again how Derek’s been the ‘bad guy’ and Scott’s a ‘hero’?
I keep forgetting about that particular moment in 2x10 because the awfulness that is the second half of 2x12 pretty much overshadows everything. But yeah, that scene. Only a few episodes ago Derek told Deaton that he didn’t trust anyone (which, you know, was actually the right thing to do, given the circumstances), to which Deaton replied that he should trust Scott. Well excuse me while I’m trying to decide whether I should laugh or cry myself into hysterics about that statement because LOOK WHERE THAT GOT HIM.
Don’t get me wrong, as I’ve already explained in a bit more detail here, I do understand Scott’s situation in all this, with Gerard threatening to kill his mother and all. But he still could have talked to Derek. He could have let him in on the plan where he was pretending to work with Gerard, and he definitely should have told him about the plan where he was going to use Derek’s body to give Gerard the bite. And you can’t seriously tell me that if it had been anyone else than Derek, he still would have pulled this crap. No, if it had been anyone else than Derek, he would have talked to them. He would have tried to find another way. It’s only ever Derek that gets thrown under the bus like that.
And don’t even get me started on Deaton in this whole mess, because seriously, fuck you, Deaton. But also, yes, fuck you, Scott. Very much so. That „you might be an alpha but you’re not mine“ line definitely killed any kind of understanding or empathy I otherwise could have had for Scott’s actions in that situation.
I’ve said it a hundred times or more: Derek’s all bark back in S1/S2, yes, and he’s also kind of an asshole through the first half of S2. But he has proven, time and time again, that he won’t hesitate to put his own safety on the line to save Scott’s ass when it really matters, even back in S1 when they were supposedly enemies. And as a thank-you, he basically gets kicked in the face. Over and over again. And that’s okay, somehow, because it’s just Derek. He probably deserves it, right? And interestingly, the same thing also goes for certain parts of the fandom: Everything is always about consent and agency and lack thereof, about how certain things are oh so abusive, and about right or wrong in general. But when it comes to Derek, all this stuff gets hand-waved away and there’s an endless list of excuses why Scott was right to do what he did and how he really, really had no other choice, and how it’s nothing really, no need to make a fuss about it. It would be interesting to see the reaction if the situation had been reversed, if it had been Derek who’d forced Scott to do this.
Anyhow, I agree that Derek probably just should have left Beacon Hills then and never looked back. Part of me still wishes he hadn’t come back after 3x12, that he’d just stayed with Cora and finally got to have a life away from all the bullshit and the betrayal.
actually Derek and Scott were never enemies in season 1, Derek told him in the first episode “we’re brothers now” and spends most of season 1 saving Scott from himself, but Scott’s reaction to seeing Derek get shot in 104 is to go home and go to bed. Derek gets a lot of bad press simply because Scott doesn’t like him, and why doesn’t Scott like him? Scott thought Derek bit him, but Derek told him not only was he not responsible, he wasn’t physically capable. He gives Scott good advice about his transformation, lacrosse means anger = bad, dating the daughter of a hunter = bad, but yet he’s painted as the villain
there is no reason at all for Scott to despise Derek but he clearly does
The only thing I can make of it is Scott’s male authority figure issues. In 3b, when Derek starts kow-towing to Scott he’s suddenly fine with Derek. Even though he was still telling Scott what to do- he was just giving his answers in the form of a question.
It might be easier than that, when Scott is transformed he becomes amazing, he gets all the things he wants, popularity, the girl, to play lacrosse etc, and then there is this guy who can do everything he can do but better, and doesn’t do it
when Derek bites the others in s2 Scott treats it like a grave personal insult, he actually insults the betas as well as removing from them their ability to choose because he’s not special any more. We see that Scott doesn’t use his powers at lacrosse because Jackson accused him of cheating. The bite makes Scott special but Derek is more special, he’s not infected with the ability, he’s born, he can do everything SCott can do, and he’s stronger, he makes Scott average again.
And then in 3a the tables are reversed, Scott becomes the alpha he’s suddenly okay with Derek - he calls Derek for advice, he wants Derek’s knowledge but he’s the special one, he’s the “hottest girl” and it doesn’t matter any more. It probably doesn’t help that after 104 his friendship with Stiles is threatened, he has the one friend and Derek threatens that too.
Plus, remember that the two fights that Derek has actually ‘won’ have been against Scott. In 1.03 he kicks Scott’s ass all over the Hale house, and then in 2.04 he Alpha’s him into the ice at the ice rink.
Its kinda telling that the only person who CANT take Derek down, is Scott. Isn’t it?
Actually, I think it’s not so much that Derek can’t fight but more that he’s always up against things that NO ONE even knew they existed, let alone how to defeat. Like the kanima, if I remember correctly, neither Derek or Scott or any of the betas and hunters managed to win with that thing - Lydia finally did it and not with brute force either. Same with the alpha pack or Jennifer or Peter in his alpha form. The problem is that the things Derek (and the others but mostly Derek) faces on almost daily basis are very…hm *puts on sunglasses* not-natural so of course, he’s not gonna be able to beat them alpha or not. But the impression that leaves is that Derek is not a good alpha. However, when it’s something a little more normal and familiar to him, we see he has no problem handling it - as demostrated by dear Scotty who gets his ass handed to him for being a stubborn brat who won’t listen.
Which would make for a very interesting scene if/when Cankaid comes back to maybe take Scott’s alpha contacts and of course Scott gets the shit beat out of him by the beta until Derek casually walks by with Stiles and just flicks Cankaid off like an annoying fly.
That would be awesome! And I agree. Everyone who beats Derek- Kali, Ennis, Jennifer, Void!Stiles, the Kanima- are all things that could take down Scott as well (and do, when he bothers to fight them).
But Dumb Derek is the WORST ALPHA EVER ™ so of course, he can’t win a fight. (Really, really, really hate that trope. Gotta tell you)
Oh, you have no idea how much I agree!!! That fail!wolf thing makes my skin craw right up there with Derek joins Scott’s pack or Derek listen to Scott because he knows BEST how to handle the supernatural shit that he had no idea existed a year or so ago. Or god forbit Scott as Derek’s alpha. Urh!
But you are also absolutely right about Scott usually avoiding the big fights. He either doesn’t show up at all, wins by dumb luck (kanima at the pool) or someone else has already done the job for him by the time he decides hey maybe I should help out a little. I mean this is the kid who when faced with the indistructable demons oni went running to his mother to put a barrier around the house to protect him (and in the process he put her right in the path of the oni but hey, who cares). Yeah, I can just see how very awesome Scott is and a better fighter too! Uh huh. *snort*
So true!
