maybe i'm insane but i've seen so many people upset about rebecca's half-assed feminism from this episode, and i get it but also. i feel like if they actually do this well and make this a season long character arc. then it actually makes a lot of sense for her to be at this spot. like i hate to say it but this is how a lot of real privileged women approach feminism, especially one from a background like rebecca, and I think it actually makes a lot of sense for her to be acting like this at this point in the story
I want to have so much faith in the writers. Like, the signs are there. The direct comparisons from Alice to Roy, for one (because he can be blunt and rude and literally growl at people and never smile and everyone's like "lol thats Roy" but if Alice is similar at all she's a bitch and a c word and it's all anyone talks aboutāand it's true! It's accurate! People are LIKE THAT and they do not realize the double standards they hold).
And bell hooks, of all authors? Who directly discusses the way class divide is a massive barrier in creating a proper "sisterhood," and that the enemy of feminism isn't men, but the patriarchy and sexism, which is an essential distinction because until women confront sexism within ourselves and do the actual work of unlearning the ways we inadvertently uphold the patriarchy, were never going to have that actual sisterhood.
It also seems as if Rebecca is keeping Keeley in the dark about a ton of stuff involving the financial drawbacks of the women's team... does she not think Keeley can handle it? Does she not take her seriously?
And when it comes down to it, if the women's team threatens their men's program, Rebecca will have to choose between continuing to support the women or cutting them loose to focus on the more financially viable men's team.
That seems like it's definitely going to be a major arc this season.
In season 3, Keeley asked Rebecca to restructure society to makes things less hostile to women (in regard to the way women are both constantly sexualized and demonized for their sexuality, at the time). Maybe this season they'll have to figure out how to do that, and get people to actually take womens sports seriously.
And like OP said, if this is not where it's going, let me be the first to set something on fire.
