The thing that’s always missing from the “women didn’t fight for the right to work they were already working they fought to get paid” is that many women also very much wanted to work.

Women wanted to be lawyers and engineers and chemists. They wanted to use their brains in challenging and interesting ways. They wanted to get the satisfaction from solving problems and inventing new shit and getting attention for it.

I know not everyone is born with intellectual curiosity or drive or determination but some people are and many of those people are women.

A Game of Thrones is 1996. Storm Warning by Mercedes Lackey is circa 1994. Storm Warning is where we first see a particular Velgarth empire in any detail, including its Iron Throne (made from the blades of deposed and conquered monarchs, of course).

Now both of those books were in progress for years beforehand, and I'm not saying anything about borrowing--that's a standby, that happens and it's fine. What really interests me is: are they mutually borrowing from an other source? Did these make it to print with each wholly unaware of the overlap? (I've heard that Toyotomi Hideyoshi inspired it for Martin but I don't have an attestation for that.)
