someone in my yiddish class told a story about how when he was a kid his mom brought him to see the movie chicken run and also in the theatre was another member of their synagogue who was a holocaust survivor. and after the movie she turned to this person's mom and went "why would you bring your children to see a movie about a chicken holocaust?" aj;fdjka;jfdjkla;kl;klakjasj imagine being a survivor of genocide and then getting triggered by chicken run. because it's too real.

youtube is now one of the better places for scientific (and tbh historical) documentaries just because of the nature of financing and distribution. unless you're looking for wildlife footage specifically, the best stuff is from very focused YouTube channels. unfortunately you have to do the legwork of vetting channels but there's really good stuff out there.

yea!!! i have absolutely nothing against independent scholars and in fact really like them, but it's incredibly hard to FIND the ones who are on the level and use citations and etc etc 😭

I find that the most reliable indicator of someone who knows their stuff is frequently specifying the limits of their knowledge. Someone who says or implies that they know everything about the medieval era is lying. Someone who makes it clear that their specialty is mid-to-late 13th century French architecture and woodwork, so they may be wrong when they talk about the strategic implications of this castle's design, can be trusted.

oh absolutely! once I'm actually watching something I can tell if it's bullshit pretty quickly, it's just that I don't want to spend my time watching twenty minutes of various documentaries only to discover that they're shit and having to start over again, yk? i wanna be able to easily find stuff that I KNOW before I watch it is made by people who understand the limits of their knowledge and are honest and straightforward about the information they have to share with me :(
