the dad kept buying it tho. #ally
I've been thinking a lot lately about really how much of a privilege it is that women (and to a lesser extent, men) don't have to settle anymore, and it makes me sad that I do think that many women are still unnecessarily falling into traps that were true for our grandmothers.
Like for so much of human history, in many cultures, for so many women a man was the only way out of your father's house, and love was a luxury. You looked at the limited availability, you did a cost-benefit analysis to weigh a personality you could live with and material prospects and you committed yourself to a man. Of course people throughout all of human history have managed to be wildly in love with their partners, and many people were able to make a solid bedrock from a marriage but. Truly, for some women there was no other option.
Some women still don't have options for whatever reason, I get that. But like. We can open bank accounts in our own name now. We can take out a loan and go to college even if we have absolutely no family support. We can support ourselves. For those of us who would maybe be down with having a man in our lives, we can actually have high standards, we can actually wait until we find someone who we're so over the moon about. So many more of us have this luxury than ever before.
And it's kind of like. Girl how dare you settle for less. How dare you stay in a relationship for years because he didn't actually technically do anything bad enough to break it off, but you're not excited about him. Be picky. Be prepared to do it alone. Do it for all the woman who couldn't. This is a gift our mothers won for us do not take it for granted.
If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. You are real you can only be yourself and theres no moral weight to any identity over another
Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots
"Why cant you be a feminine man society hates feminine men 🥺" and "all the butch lesbians are becoming men we need u 🥺" = stay in the closet for the noble purpose of being an abstract representation point in my new york times opinion column. You wont actually be a gnc cis person youll be a closeted trans person who uses the wrong words but I need you to do that because i hate you
Was reviewing my autism evaluation report and apparently I have a poor and limited understanding of romantic partnerships

The way I’ve figured out how to frame my urbanist arguments to people irl who are scared of being forced to give up their cars or something is talking about the lack of choice.
The way that a lot of car centric cities are designed leaves no freedom of choice for how to get around. Isn’t that unfair?
In mostly pedestrian or transit centric cities like New York or Tokyo or something there are still people who own cars. It’s perfectly possible to get around with a car.
In fucking Houston or whatever though there isn’t much of a choice. If you don’t want to get around without a car you suffer. The environment is actively hostile and dangerous for you.
Shouldn’t people have choice in how they live their lives? Right now where I live public transit is something for the desperate. Not an everyday form of transit. Isn’t that bad? Isn’t that an injustice?
Should you be forced to take on the expensive burden of a car to exist in this city? Shouldn’t the disabled and the young and the poor also have an easy way of getting around?
Okay maybe you personally will never give up your car no matter what. Even if it becomes inconvenient. But what about everyone else? Isn’t it stupid that they have no choice? Shouldn’t there be options? Isn’t it infuriating that there’s a way to give people more freedom of choice in how they live their lives in this city and nobody is trying to improve on that?
crazy how much i could get done if i didn't have "doesn't want to do things" disorder

can you imagine how good shows would be if writers thought of women as human beings
Some of you may not want to hear this, but sometimes autism accommodation means giving that socially awkward person who said something that came off as passive aggressive or uncomfortable the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone is capable of reading social rules and cues effectively, I thought this was autism 101.
you can always ask for clarification or (NICELY) explain how it came off to you, remember!
I have an autistic coworker who used to say really uncomfortable things to museum guests while making small talk. like bringing up active, controversial revolutions in their countries if they were international, and such. finally, after a group of Hawaiian guys got visibly angry when he asked if they were "in the military or just rich" to be able to live there- meant to be a cost of living joke -I said, "hey, personally, I try not to talk politics with guests. sometimes it may upset them and we don't get paid enough to deal with that"
he looked thoughtful and said, "oh, I never considered it that way." turns out he was just a geopolitics nerd and didn't realize people might react emotionally to what he saw as a purely intellectual discussion
he hasn't done it since

I often think about this time I was talking to a friend while she was smoking (politely downwind of me because I have asthma) and she said “I’m not a smoker. I only smoke when I drink.”
And then I, knowing her, asked her “Okay, how often do you drink?”
And she paused for a moment and then went “almost every day.”
Okay. So you’re a smoker then.
I love my friends they are very smart people but because they are people they sometimes miss things
Being the only person who doesn’t do drugs or regularly drink in a friend group of writers and artists sure is an experience let me tell you
I’ve witnessed a bunch of drunk creative and well read people decide to smoke weed out of a bell pepper and be disappointed that it didn’t taste spicy.
My friends. My stupid beautiful drunk and wonderful friends. There is no capsaicin in bell peppers.
Being around well educated and kind drunks also leads to situations that include sentences like “Hey I have some of that clean heroin leftover from the harm reduction center. Do you wanna try it?”
No thank you but I’m glad that the heroin that you’re doing is from a safe source. I love you.
what people don’t understand about how adhd is disabling is that it’s not just getting temporarily distracted from, like, school work or hobbies. it’s getting distracted/being unable to motivate yourself to go to the doctor, eat regularly, do hygiene tasks, etc. it’s not knowing when or how long it will take you to do something, ANYTHING, and in many cases that thing is taking a shower or keeping your house from turning into a biohazard. it’s about being fundamentally incapable of controlling your attention and focus on anything, even and especially things you need to do to survive.
imo the pov character should be lying to themselves and concealing shit from themselves constantly
