I love you characters whose identities are fought for. I love you characters who make you cherish life itself.
love when ocs grab you by the shoulders and tell you something essential to their lore without you getting a say in it
"it's ok to show (x) in fiction as long as the bad guy gets punished!" the bad guy doesn't have to get punished. in fact the bad guy can win altogether. the bad guy can entirely get away with it. hope this helps
and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.

huge fan of when a character used to be a completely different character. huge fan of two characters who are physically the same but mentally they are completely different. huge fan of when the former character is replaced by the latter character and it causes crazy shit to go down
"Doomed yaoi" this "doomed yuri" that what about doomed found family. What about finding comfort in these new people after going through so much on your own—a community, a solace, a home to come back to. Caring for them with all you've got, only to realize that it wasn't going to work, ever, no matter what you tried. Only to have it ripped apart, no matter how much you tried to hold them close. Found family that becomes lost family. Found family that takes your heart with it when they go.
I can't believe the story of a man who becomes so obsessed with the version of his dead wife he created in his mind that he builds a special military sect in order to fuel his vanity project to attempt to rebuild her as he remembers her.
The story where because she's based on his memories of the version of her who died, she is always doomed to fail/die over and over and over again until finally being shut down when he has abused her memory so severely trying to bring her back that she no longer remembers her own name.
The story where the man brings his own daughter into his mess and then pits her against the recreation of her own mother without ever telling her that's who it is, that story?
I can't believe that's not a gothic novel and is in fact the plot of seasons 9 and 10 of the show made by having sprites in Halo shake their heads up and down while a bunch of guys from Texas make sex jokes.
sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.

I don't have ms paint but just pretend it is bc no one knows paintbrush for mac but i can assure you it was just as hellish if not worse since theres technically no brushes other than a pixel round brush and the worst looking freaking spray paint

people will go onnn about how a man’s flaws makes him so nuanced and interesting and then act genuinely confused when u feel the same way about a woman…
i like when fiction treats love as a more complicated force and not something that is inherently pure or redemptive. portray it as flawed and complex as any other human impulse. give me love as prejudice, love as possessive stasis, love as addiction, love as blindness, etc.
i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!
A great piece of advice I've seen is "Don't fixate about what the character would never do. Think about the circumstances that would drive them to do this, even if they wouldn't normally."

a thing that i particularly love about the hunger games prequels is how it shows that people have been fighting against the games since their inception
when i was younger and read the original trilogy for the first time i was so bothered how it was 74 years of games, i remember thinking how could it have gone on so long without anyone doing anything
these prequels highlight that people have been fighting from the get-go: lucy gray's defiance, reaper ripping down panem's flags to cover the fallen tributes, haymitch's games and how many others shared his ideologies - the capitol just drowns them out, they rewrite their stories so their efforts are forgotten

I try not to fall into the "I never liked their work anyway" ditch when an artist/creator reveals themself to be a terrible person
BUT
a feeling I do have and will stand by is "While I enjoyed their work overall I did have some gripes that I overlooked out of affection and whimsy, but now that my loyalty is gone and my affection tainted there is nothing holding me back from enumerating my many grievances, to which the revelations of the creator's shittiness may or may not provide a new and infuriating context."
