The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
you are not a disappointment for not being able to make everyone happy. thatâs not your purpose, pleasing everyone. your purpose is far more than that and you are your own priority. your happiness and your health are priorities.

The great thing about huge declarations is that the most times you're ever going to have to deliver on them is ONCE. And even that is vanishingly unlikely. The dishes happen every day. My feet hurt now. The kids need a lift to piano lessons every week. The grenade is hypothetical.

hey just a little reminder â sometimes when youâre in survival mode, living day by day is literally all you can do. itâs all you have space for. and then when you have the space and time and release to slowly start to come out of survival mode, you have to re-learn how to live with the future in mind. learning from your past. making your future self proud. doing things your future self will thank you for. and I donât see a lot of people talking about how TERRIFYING that is. but it is. itâs really, really scary to plan and learn what healthy self discipline looks like and how to greet every version of yourself. and so if thatâs you today â Iâm very proud of you. thereâs nothing shameful about relearning something. youâre doing so well! Iâm so glad you got this far <3
Domestic incompetence is going to kill men
ok but the sight of that giant lint block does not make me want to clean out lint more. imagine how good that shit would feel to touch omg
You can just gather that shit. And then if you're only drying cottons or something you can take it camping and use it as firestarter
Some other things a person might not know, especially if nobody ever taught them because their parents assumed that men don't need to do house maintenance:
Washing machines have filters to catch large debris; you should check these periodically and remove anything stuck in them. If you don't, it affects the machine's efficiency and eventually can lead to the filter getting clogged and flooding your laundry space.
Washing machines also need to be cleaned from time to time, generally by running them on hot with nothing in them except cleaning chemicals (you can buy washing machine cleaner, or google it for various diy solutions that probably involve vinegar or bleach). If you don't they'll start growing mold, and then all your stuff will come out of the wash smelling bad.
Dishwashers also generally have filters to catch large chunks of food and whatnot. Boy howdy can they smell bad if you don't ever check them.
There are dishwasher disinfectants as well, or you can do things with vinegar; either way, it'll prevent mold buildup and also hopefully rinse away buildup from soaps and whatnot.
If you have a reusable water bottle, wash it weekly. Otherwise you're probably drinking mold, the effects of which can be widely variable but almost always bad.
Vacuum cleaners often need their filters cleaned or replaced. If you vacuum a room and it smells worse than it did before, you probably need to change the filter or the vacuum bag.
To clarify, the reason you have to clean the lint out is 1) it makes your clothes not dry well and 2) it fucking CATCHES FIRE
Iâd divorce him too lmao
Itâs never JUST about the tomatoes.
Basically!
Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, what Gottman calls âbids.â For example, say that the husband is a bird enthusiast and notices a goldfinch fly across the yard. He might say to his wife, âLook at that beautiful bird outside!â Heâs not just commenting on the bird here: Heâs requesting a response from his wifeâa sign of interest or supportâhoping theyâll connect, however momentarily, over the bird.
The wife now has a choice. She can respond by either âturning towardâ or âturning awayâ from her husband, as Gottman puts it. Though the bird-bid might seem minor and silly, it can actually reveal a lot about the health of the relationship. The husband thought the bird was important enough to bring it up in conversation and the question is whether his wife recognizes and respects that.
These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow-up had âturn-toward bidsâ 33 percent of the time. Only three in 10 of their bids for emotional connection were met with intimacy. The couples who were still together after six years had âturn-toward bidsâ 87 percent of the time. Nine times out of 10, they were meeting their partnerâs emotional needs.
Those who showed genuine interest in their partnerâs joys were more likely to be together.
Damn, this made me think of all the âshouting into the voidâ social media posts everyone makes. Just bids for connection. From ANYONE.
this is the tomatoes thing I was just talking about lol
Once you become a certain age, it is your responsibility to unlearn behaviors that hinder your growth as a person.
Man I cannot stress this enough. The âthis is how I am, take it or leave itâ attitude is an act of immaturity. We all have toxic traits that we need to work on and as an adult itâs our responsibility to recognize the damage that they can do to the ones we love. We all need to put in more effort in becoming better individuals.
Even when Lila made deals with the Solara and the gang seemed to be against her, even when Pasquale started showing his macho tendencies long before he became the unbearable communist hypocrite who spent all day mansplaining to anything that wore a skirt, blaming Lila and insinuating she was a 'whore' versus LenĂș, whom he called a 'good girl' for continuing to behave conventionally for her time, even then, Enzo always stood by Lila. Enzo trusted that Lila was smart and knew what she was doing, and despite appearances, he was sure that Lila wouldnât disappoint. Enzo was always there for her, he never wanted to tame her, never wanted to cage her. He always knew she was a wild animal, beautiful precisely because of that: for being untamable. And he loved her that way, free, even if he couldnât have her. Many tried to domesticate her, not understanding that no matter how much they hit her, how much they damaged her, no matter how much they tried to break her spirit: Lilaâs rage and yearning for freedom would always make her shatter the bars, even if doing so cost her a part of herself. Enzo was the only one who never wanted her as a trophy to bring home; it was enough for him to just be part of her life, even if all he could do was watch. And, in the end, he was the only man in her life who truly earned her affection, her respect, and her love. He was the only one she chose without pressure, without conditions, and without ulterior motives as the person with whom she truly wanted to build a family. Enzo was the only good man not because he didnât try to break her spirit, because thatâs basic, the bare minimum to expect from a man. Enzo was the only good man because he understood that love is free, that it canât be forced, that it canât be demanded. That love is about giving without expecting in return, and that women arenât beasts to be tamed, but companions to walk alongside.

honestly, the radicalizing event that made me ditch faux-ironic detachment is when I sent a hard-to-write sentimental message to someone I was (at the time) close with, and they sent the vomiting emoji back. it was like oh okay, that sucks. I am now of the opinion that it is 100x cooler and braver to be sappy with the people you care about.
Being sincere:
Does not just require courage but also builds courage.
Makes you sound more like a protagonist.
Shows you have passions and convictions.
Is often the more appropriate way to react to how others feel rather than dismissing anything uncomfortable with jokey jokes.
Strengthens your bonds with those you care about. Your words become more moving and the way you show others you care about them and their issues helps them improve.
Strengthens your own self-confidence and ideals in some contexts, as you have to actually think about and defend them.
It is good to be the kind of person who puts genuine kindness, care, and love into the world. Sometimes that will be misplaced and ill-received, but if it is, that will say more about the other person than about you.
I wish more people got this because some âlow-empathyâ people are the most compassionate and sympathetic in the universe, and I hate it when thatâs taken to mean âunfeeling and probably hostileâ when nothing could be further from the truth
Or, as my dad put it,
Sympathy: I know how you feel Empathy: I feel how you feel Compassion: is there anything I can do to help?
Sympathy: that sucks bro empathy: I feel that compassion: want me to send you some puppy and kitten pictures to make you feel better?
Posts like this make me feel so much better. It always seems like society treat responses to others pain as though empathy is the most important kind. I am around 85% compassionate and this post helped me not feel like I am a monster because of that for once.

i think that killing a dragon should have catastrophic nuclear-fallout level environmental consequences tbh. their blood should scorch and wither the earth with fire and poison, the toxic fumes released as they decay should choke the land and all nearby living creatures, and the entire landscape where they fell should be transformed into a blighted wasteland where bleached leviathan bones loom upwards out of the ground as a warning that can be seen from miles away, the boundary markers of an exclusion zone.
i also think that it would be wonderfully ironic if those who sought the fame and glory of the title of 'dragonslayer' only ended up with the bitter, enduring reminder of the devastation they're responsible for. this is not a place of honor. no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here.
Ok, vote:
dragon corpses are:
nuclear fallout
whalefall
Can't they be both? They're nuclear fallout to everything else, but a nutritious whalefall to Creatures of Darkness. Things swarm a dragon corpse that aren't meant for the mortal plane but at least they eventually clean it all up, maybe after a few centuries. Not quick enough for people to notice that it's a good thing.
But por que no los dos the other way! What if the dragon's death were a mixture of devastation and wonder that were so intermingled and subtle that it took hundreds of years for people to truly understand what all had to do with the death of the dragon and how it interacted?
What if, when you killed the dragon, you had the initial outburst of fire and ichor; this, more often than being eaten or incinerated by the flame breath or cut apart by claws, was what actually killed the knight, and the torn corpse rested there in a pool of acid held from leaking into the soil by a solid layer of glass from the heat of it.
And then the scavengers come, the dark creatures and the lesser wyrms eager to feast on the flesh of the dragon, and the greater and more subtle horrors that hunt them.
Those horrors also eat the local monsters, so that the aftermath of a dragon's death sees a significant drop in the population of werewolves and kelpies and things that haunt the woods and hunt the abandoned roadways, which the local populace sees as a blessing and spent many years connecting with God's blessing for killing the dragon and don't yet realize it's because bigger monsters arrived and will eventually make their presence known.
Eventually the glass cracks and the acid leaks into the water table and there are years of famine and pestilence, years or decades down the line.
And then there's the magic, which after being released from the dragon, spends some time enriching the local witches' and wizards' magical abilities and causing a higher-than-usual number of magically inclined children to be born.
Later on that high background radiation of magic attracts a whole nother level of predatory beings---perhaps the place of the dragon's death becomes a fairy hill, in the Pratchettesque "fairies are bad" sense. Perhaps demons arrive. In any case, the presence of such beings warps the nature of the magic, and the children born with magic tend to incline themselves towards darker arts.
Then eventually the last of the dragon's corpse is devoured, leaving a host of final-generation scavengers with no other food than the humans nearby, and after an initial hesitation, they are propelled by starvation to swarm and devour.
Oh, and the killer of the dragon, if they survive, has probable thermal, acid, and radiation burns to deal with, plus some inheritance by conquest of something of the dragon's power in a way that makes them a magnet ever after to the things that want to eat that power themselves.
TL;DR: killing a dragon releases a host of short and long term curses and blessings, some overt and some subtle, all interconnected, such that the land nearby undergoes a ping-pong effect of changing fortunes over nearly a century.

we need to stop equating lack of independence with lack of maturity. people that live with their parents or have a caregiver or don't work or need more support than others aren't inherently immature. there's lots of reasons why people would be in this situation, even outside of disability (plenty of cultures out there expect people to live with their parents past what we consider the beginning of adulthood), and regardless of the reason we deserve support and community through what is already likely to be an isolating experience. don't make it worse for us
expanding this to include people who can't/don't drive
ppl are so annoying âyou canât paint ur bedroom pink youâre an adultâ i did not spend my entire life waiting to grow up and control my life to paint my bedroom beige
I had a sales woman in furniture store try and tell me not to buy a hot bubblegum pink loveseat because she wanted me to âthink about the futureâ
Bitch, I am thinking about the future. I already got a hot bubblegum pink couch at home and now I need a loveseat to go with it.
when I first bought my house, I announced my decision to paint my bedroom purple. I had wanted a purple bedroom for thirty damn years, you fucking bet I was gonna have one now. My friends decided, for some reason, that I meant what one of them referred to as â14 year old girl purpleâ (through whatâs wrong with the colors a 14 year old girl chooses, I donât know, even if theyâre not what I want as an adult). They didnât believe me until they saw the color on the actual wall, even thought they helped me pick out paints. My mother, meanwhile, decided to get worried that if I painted my bedroom a âdark purpleâ, it would be âdepressingâ. As if, with an entire house to live in, I would spend all my time in the bedroom, which I wanted to be dark because I would be sleeping in there. In the damn dark.
I had like one, maybe two friends who were all like FUCK YEAH YOU PAINT IT WHATEVER COLOR YOU WANT, PURPLE BEDROOMS ARE AWESOME.
But when they actualy saw the finished bedroom, every single one of them was like, âOh yeah, thatâs really pretty.â (Well, the ones who supported me from the beginning were more like WOOHOO.)
And the moral of the story is: Fuck âem, please yourself. Either theyâll come around, or you can safely ignore every question of taste they opine about for the rest of time.
This applies to other adulting activities, too. When I was a kid, I decided that I wanted to have a wedding cake made of doughnuts. When I got older, I figured that I would be âmatureâ about it and get a traditional cake, which the older adults approved of. Now that Iâm 25 and facing the possibility of actual marriage in the near future, Iâm just like âmarriage is a social construct but it comes with tax & insurance benefits, so just give me that goddamn doughnut cake.â If they donât like it then they donât have to come to my wedding.

I would like you all to view my office. Iâm thirty and my rainbow room is awesome, people can fight me
Iâm thirty and my first big furniture purchase was a custom coffin shaped coffee table that opens up and is lined with purple crushed velvet. I would have loved it at 13 and I love it now. Growing up doesnât mean you have to abandon what makes you happy.
GROWING UP DOESNâT MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
GROWING UP DOESNâT

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
I have told this story before, and I will tell it again, because I am An Old now and repeating stories forever is our prerogative:
When I bought my house, the kitchen was multiple shades of dingy white. It was dismal, but it was now mine! So went to the hardware store for paint (well, several trips, painted swatches on panel, etc â Iâm very picky. But this was the final, ârealâ trip). It was a busy day in the paint section. There were at least five people behind me in line.
Now, remember, latex paint is slightly lighter and brighter when wet than it is when dry. And Iâd decided to paint my kitchen candy-apple red. The hardware store employee took my gallon off the Paint Jiggler and cracked it open to put a dab on the top, revealing the most incredibly deep pink, and behind me I hear the entire line of people say,
âOh my god.â
âŠin perfect chorus.
I did not realize up until that moment that shocking a crowd of strangers with my paint color choices was a life goal, but at that moment I felt an absolutely overwhelming sense of achievement.
This is the door to my garage. It used to be white. Live your best life.

Iâm 35. I have been told my place looks like maybe a LP fan lives there.
Not sure what they mean.
When I first moved into my place, I painted the spare room, that eventually became my office, lime green, the kind of lime green that glows down the corridor when I open the door - The colour was only available as an âaccent colourâ in the section of paints intended for childrenâs playrooms, and in the shop I got a lot of âOh your son will love this!â And from people I knew I got a lot of âOh well, youâre 21 now, youâre basically a teenager, this is a terrible idea, youâll hate it and need to pull out all the furniture to repaint it.â And I have to report that I am now in my forties and my office still looks like this, and it makes me smile every time I see it.
