One of the stranger tropes of tumblr (and like, to a lesser extent general) discourse is like - anger or disbelief or outright contempt/mockery for someone whose suffered a traumatic experience or serious misfortune that was not the most statistically likely course of events to occur and/or that is counter to the narrative they find politically convenient? Well mostly that last bit, I'm sure.
On the most zoomed out and least loaded level I can think of, it is basically axiomatic that large military operation by any organized and armed force will commit some atrocities. It's one of the reasons people say (but mostly don't believe) that crimes of aggression are the most serious and foundational war crimes of all. Despite this, basically no one on here who has ever picked a side in a conflict as 'the good ones' seems capable of accepting their guys might have done a massacre or tortured prisoners or abused civilian populations.
Certainly people seem incredibly resistant to accepting that states or administrations (or even specific policies and projects) that they consider praiseworthy has some price in blood and tears. The reaction to first-hand accounts of said price are usually reacted to as entirely bad-faith propaganda.
To instead use as personal and loaded an example as possible, see the intense emotional investment a certain number of people have in women being Safe and incapable of being abusive in relationships.
I'm not one of those people who is opposed to having sex scenes in fiction at all but I have to admit that a lot of the time when I encounter them I struggle to understand why they're happening. I also admit that is most likely an issue with me more than the story.
I keep wondering why the characters are horny for each other in the first place. Sometimes I even wonder why they love each other at all (it is known that in a lot of mainstream fiction characters can end up together just because one of them is a man and the other is a woman, even if they barely interact).
does the body ALWAYS have to keep the score? maybe we could just have a friendly game this time. maybe we can just have fun without putting numbers on it
Republicans spend millions on anti-trans propaganda to shift public opinion against trans people over several years.
Democrats fail to challenge their narratives and instead try to distance themselves from the issue.
Republicans get free reign over how trans people are framed in the public consciousness.
Democrats decide trans people are too unpopular after all and it would be best to throw them under the bus to be more electable.
If only there was something they could have done on this issue besides giving up preemptively...
It's especially frustrating because republicans support extremely unpopular policies all the time and when polling shows they're unpopular they don't give up or change their minds, they double down and force the other team to compromise or even give up instead.
Democrats rarely even try to do the same.
They are a band of feckless goons who won't stand up for the policies they claim to support. The moment they face the smallest amount of pushback on anything they go further to the right and start talking about how actually they support anti-trans policies and hate immigrants too.
Republicans straight-up make terrorist threats against random entities that are even remotely adjacent to trans people, like children's hospitals or beer companies, and they just give up and drop trans people at the whims of the terrorists.
Would be nice if the rest of that country didn't readily bend the knee to bullies all the time.
Support for gay marriage among Republicans is higher today than it was among Democrats 26 years ago.
And I don't think it's because the gay lobby gave up and went, "Well, I guess we're just going to have to accept that this issue is always going to be too dangerous to take a stand on."
From what I recall similar things happened with issues like interracial marriage. You have to actually fight for unpopular but correct things for them to become less unpopular.
Yeah it's fucking astonishing. When Gay Marriage was a big national debate, the conservative, anti-gay folks said,
"Unlike the civil rights movement, which was based on prejudice over something that doesn't really matter, homosexuality strikes at some of our most fundamental intuitions and beliefs about the nature of men, women, and society, so the left is crazy if they think the issue will ever be anything but deeply controversial."
And now, about a decade later, we get,
"Unlike the movements for civil rights and gay rights, the trans movement involves such complex and foundational issues in human psychology that etc etc."
Genuinely what do people like this think is going to happen if they adopt and legitimize the framing of their opponents at the expense of their own base in an increasingly polarized world?
We saw that work out in the UK. Starmer gets into power primarily due to the other side fucking up, moves to the right, alienates his own base and even invites them to leave if they disagree with his policies, becomes extremely unpopular, resigns after loading the guns the fascists will use to persecute minorities in the near future.

Kind of emotional about this given that my past self donated both time and computing power from our machines to solve this. Now AI advancements in protein folding could end malaria and save more than half a million of the world's poorest people per year as a result, and that's just one of the applications.
Fighting antibiotic resistance and restoring the environment somewhat also become possible through this. The machinery of life is unlocking.
He really is a pervert.
Spiderfucker stocks going up.
The most ironic thing about the ideology of Nicolas Flamel in FMDM and his philosophical successors is that he has adopted this extreme sort of moral relativism... but also judges not adopting this worldview as evil and calls self-righteousness Satan's curse on humanity.
Using his own rhetoric wouldn't that also be a purely subjective judgment then? He says (and I agree) that things like good and evil or justice and injustice are subjective constructs that don't really exist in nature but then he goes on to reject any effort to construct useful categories around that in favor of enshrining his own simplistic worldview where we can't meaningfully assign moral value to anything. On what basis does he argue that self-righteousness is wrong if he has seemingly rejected morality? On what basis are war and conflict wrong if you gave truly equal weight to all points of view and thought that from some perspectives things that seem bad are actually good?
It feels like he's pretty much avoiding the effort of actually having to do moral reasoning by refusing the idea that some positions might actually be better than others. It's all seemingly equal shades of gray.
And on top of that he seems to think of conflict purely as a problem of incompatible moral values, even though they'd still happen if people were fully amoral (has this guy seen ants?)
And so his pseudo-intellectual nonsense doomed everyone in vain and did not work.
I think even without hindsight the plan seemed dubious actually.
The truth about the eggs is finally revealed.

Do you like dungeons that are more surreal manifestations of the adventurers subconsciousnesses?
It depends on the background of how it came to be and why the characters are there I think.
Mutuals tier list based on how deep they'd be able to delve into the dungeon before perishing.
Mutuals tier list based on how interesting and mechanically complex their special abilities are when they fight.
Mutuals tier list based on who lays more eggs on average each year.
hey everyone, just curious:
what is everyone's criteria for blocking people?

We escaped from the castle and I can already tell that these mines our party is exploring now are going to be a bit confusing to navigate, but we will persevere and draw a path for those who come after.
