Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that “don’t affect” us and it seriously breaks my heart

This is how I learn there's a moth whose tiny caterpillars live exclusively off the old shells of dead tortoises.

I was so inspired by this I made it into a piece of art for a final in one of my courses for storytelling in conservation

It’s not exactly cheerful and it’s full of things that are probably going to feel really fucking raw if you’re processing a fresh death.

thinking about how supernatural is a tragedy, specifically dean winchester, specifically how dean winchester's life was a tragedy. set up for failure since elementary school with his dead mom and his absent/abusive dad. he is suicidal from the first episode to the last episode when they finally give him what he wants and kill him off. this is a character who tries to kill himself several times (on purpose on screen right in front of our very eyes) and succeeds only for them to drag him back again, a character who wants nothing more than to have a normal life and a family and a happy ending. a character who wants good things to happen to him/for him so badly. but the narrative brutalizes him. everyone he loves dies. he can't save any of them. he never gets to make or keep a family. he never gets to retire from hunting. he never gets to know any other life. they just fucking kill him. and he dies without ever really knowing what it feels like to love or be loved. he dies without unlearning his self hatred or his repression. he dies without getting anything he wanted. there is no resolution to his story. all of that useless, directionless wanting. all of that aimless and pitiful clawing and climbing and gnashing his teeth just for him to die. his ending is so toothless and unfair, when he's someone who suffered so much and struggled so hard and only wanted, more than anything, to have a life. for him to resign himself to that one final death when he had quite literally nothing else to lose is so bleak. where was his reward? why did they decide to show him that he was right all along, that he would be alone always and then he would die, that there would never be peace for him until he was dead, that all he was meant for was being used up and spit out and then killed? like what else did they want from him... i'm sick to my stomach
