Having a religious experience upon seeing a Redtail catfish in person
A rest day isn't enough. I need one billion years alone in a crystal.
Asdfghjkl her perfectly straight face and even tone throughout should win an AWARD
Went to the beach specifically looking for tiger beetles the other day and was delighted to find and photograph many beautiful specimens! Perhaps most lovely of all, this White Beach Tiger Beetle. They’re a fun challenge for me, as their speed and agility can make them tough to catch in focus.
I think the way I feel when I look at tiger beetles is probably similar to the way rich men who like golf feel when they see a particularly expensive sports car. There is just nothing cooler, faster, and more sleekly beautiful than a tiger beetle. If you sit and really watch them for a while you’ll see them race over sand so fast you can lose them if you blink. They will suddenly lunge forward and pounce like leopards to catch prey in their massive jaws, then intuitively use the wind currents around them to navigate the shoreline. They have huge eyes and you can see them watching you back, with a certain focus that is unmistakable.
The tiger beetle family (Cicindelidae) exists in many places across the globe. If you have them near you, I strongly encourage you head out to try and spot a tiger beetle for yourself someday. They’re simply one of the coolest fucking insects alive on this planet.
you are alive on a planet with insects and whales and diatoms and mycelium networks and puppies and your human friends. literally so awesome to be a living thing

"With genetic test results back from U.C. Davis Laboratories of toe-hair samples from each side of his body, I am excited to share that this sheep
🌟 IS INDEED a CHIMERA 🌟
His black mouflon side is a genetically different individual from his black gray side. The lab ran the test twice just to be sure!
Oh but wait, THERE IS MORE!
He is ALSO a she!
The black mouflon side is male.
The black gray side is female!
What I can tell you beyond these test results, is that this beautiful creature successfully bred four solid patterned ewes this winter that produced a total of 9 lambs, of which all were either solid pattern or mouflon pattern; 5 rams and 4 ewes. "

Initially I thought the zig zag between light and dark along the spine was just the lighting but no! That's the split in coat colours!
Thank you so much @draconym ! Look at those differences!
Glass squids live in the boundless waters of the twilight, or mesopelagic, zone. 🦑💫
Like other cephalopods, glass squids (family Cranchiidae) are covered in tiny pigment sacs called chromatophores. They often keep their chromatophores closed, so their skin is basically see-through. This invisibility cloak hides them from both predators and prey. When the glass squid’s cover is blown, they expand their chromatophores to darken their appearance. Some may fill their body cavity with ink instead, presumably to blend into the darkness. And when danger still looms, a glass squid may squirt ink into the water and jet away. A ghostly shroud of ink creates a distraction so the squid can escape. More than 60 species of glass squids live in deep twilight waters around the world. Some are little more than 10 centimeters (four inches) long, but others are giants. In fact, the largest of all squids—the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), nearly 10 meters (33 feet) long and weighing up to 495 kilograms (1,091 pounds)—belongs to the family Cranchiidae. We typically see smaller glass squids about 30 centimeters (12 inches) long, likely because the larger ones are faster swimmers that can easily elude our slow-moving submersibles.
