Toph vs Weeping Angel
So, I just found a comic on Pinterest that showed Toph one-shotting a Weeping Angel. It was very funny, but it got me thinking. You see, Weeping Angels can only move when they are not seen, specifically by Sight. However, Toph's Seismic Sense is only a substitute for Visual Sight, which means that at a basic level of understanding the Quantum Lock feature of an Angel can't be activated and therefore they move unimpeded. Despite this, I would make the argument that Seismic Sense is better for stopping Weeping Angels than Visual Sight. My reasoning for this is that when Toph is using Seismic Sense she perceives a detailed recreation of her surroundings. Note the word 'recreation', because as we learned from Matt Smith's Doctor Who , "That which holds an image of an angel becomes itself an angel", which denotes that any image depicting an Angel has the same functions and weaknesses of a Natural Weeping Angel. Therefore, any Angel within Toph's Seismic Sense Range is forced into their Quantum Locked state indefinitely because Toph is always 'seeing' them despite not being able to so visually see them.
Finally, since Weeping Angels only turn to stone when they are observed, that is the only opportunity to destroy them with Earthbending. If, Toph's Seismic Sense doesn't count as 'seeing' an Angel then she can't one-shot a Weeping Angel without someone else looking at it.
the whole Gaang living through a horror survival episode while Toph walks in and out of frame, getting increasingly annoyed that they're STILL playing this stupid "the statues are moving ahhhh help us Toph ahhhh" prank, until she finally just crumbles them out of sheer THAT JOKE STOPPED BEING FUNNY TWO HOURS AGO frustration
the rest of the Gaang collapsing in a relieved heap, still staring at the rubble, as she storms off again
putting this out here too, these old monkeys are munching on my brain at the moment,,,
A mama lynx decided this Alaskan porch was a good spot to give birth.
I guess when a giant cat decides to have kittens on your porch, you have to let nature take its course.
I found a video of the lynx kitties!
And I found the porch owner who took more photos.
Check out the murder paws!
Annoying mama.
Climbing a giant tree… no big.
You can see more lynx goodness on Tim Newton’s photography page.
WHY are their LEGS so long i cant deal with this
Imagine them BEANS
As an adaptation to the cold of their native habitat, lynxes have very small beans relative to their paw size!
So you’d be getting a handful of squishy toes and fur, and some pretty big claws, but the beans would be small and well-hidden by fur.
BIG MASHERS
tiny beans

Not to be rhe ten millionth person to say “USAmerican President Donald Trump Is An Incoherent Public Speaker Whose Train Of Thought Can Be Best Described As Scat Jazz” but I just remembered that when he talks at international events it is several dozen people’s job to translate what he’s saying and what he intends to say to world leaders in real time
And I desperately wish to hear how they do it
If anyone reading this isn’t fluent enough in English to understand the sentences that man says, please know that he has essentially mixed a number of adjectives and topics together in a hat and is pulling them out at random like a horrible children’s game
Like that waxy jaundiced bitch will straight up be like “J'étais sur internet l'autre jour – internet, la plus grande invention américaine. Et la Chine a “internet aussi. Pas un bon internet, pas comme le mien, j'ai un internet formidable. Les gens me disent : « Donald, ton internet est génial ! » On adore l'internet de Donald. Mais la Chine… Chine, Chine, Chine… And people will lose their minds
International translators have had this problem for A While - if they *don't* clean up what he says to sound coherent, they look like they're doing a bad job.
Explore Trump translation challenges, tips for interpreters, and 2025 strategies for accurate political translation and Trumpslation success
oh my god
There was a scandal in Poland because one translator decided to translate him accurately, tone, vocabulary level and word salad tangents and all. Polish conservatives who don't speak English and previously only heard smoothed out translations that sounded coherent and used big words were up in arms about how the translator was "inserting her political agenda", "mocking him", "exaggerating", "purposefully trying to make him look bad" and "incredibly unprofessional". I listened to the translation in question. It was literally just accurate.
5. Sensitive and Controversial Language Trump’s speeches occasionally contain misogynistic, sexist, or inflammatory language. Japanese interpreter Tsuruta, for example, faced challenges when translating sexualized remarks, ultimately opting for standard terminology to maintain professionalism. Similarly, Chinese translator Kumiko Torikai found certain lewd expressions ethically challenging, ultimately leading to her retirement. Navigating these situations requires skillful balancing of accuracy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that the translation is appropriate without distorting the original intent.
I don't know why the authors of PoliLingua act as if Trump's verbal misogyny and racism wasn't very much part of his "original intent".
it only now dawns on me that millions of people on this planet think Trump is way smarter than he is because translators have neglected to relate his violent speech accurately out of misunderstood politeness. Make the ape sound like a ape
We had a mini-scandal in the German translation/interpretation community last year about exactly this – the interpreter for the inauguration got sick of Trump's incoherence and made a remark into his mic that was not intended to be heard (here's my post on it).
Well. It's the Fourth Of July. Again.
For those of you who aren't familiar, I live in an exceptionally flammable part of the United States, and despite the fact that every goddamn year multiple parts of my state catch fire, destroy homes and kill people, the local assholes insist on getting drunk and setting fire to a bunch of illegal explosives anyway. In 2023, God granted me a Miracle that prevented my house from burning down.
Last year, I had to resort to Psychological and Chemical Warfare to keep the patriotic arsonists at bay.
This year is apparently An Important Birthday for the clusterfuck we have the nerve to call a nation, so despite the fact there is so much smoke in the air that the sun has literally been blood red for the last week, the pyrotechnic fetishists are out in force.
Last year, I hit upon the concept that if my neighbors were going to act like problem animals, it would make sense to use the management techniques on them that you might use on say, a Bear that was doing serious property damage. Thusly, I created The Stench, a nontoxic but FOUL smelling concoction that I could discretely spray around the flammable gatherings and render the area extremely uncomfortable to occupy for the rest of the night, forcing them to give up or move on.
If this seems harsh: There is no story from 2024 because a grass fire was started by fireworks less than 12 miles from me and the high winds put me in the evacuation zone in under an hour. Over fifty people lost their homes. Errant fireworks burning my house down is a very real possibility, and I pay the price in anxiety and insurance premiums.
The Stench is noxious but harmless, and also very effective at building a buffer zone around my home. But sneaking up to parties on foot in this heat is both exhausting and nerve-wracking. There have to be more effective ways to do this
-And there is! It involves Weeds and Business Cards :)
Well. It's not quite an hour into July 5th. I am very tired, may have destroyed my sense of smell, and am not sure if I'm proud of or VERY disappointed in my fellow citizens.
On one hand: FAR fewer fireworks parties this year!
- Only nine to last year's thirteen - three of them had the good sense to be firing their recreational explosives out over the local reservoir - That's far from foolproof - and really bad for the fish - also y'all are RIGHT NEXT to where the Bald Eagles are nesting - but congratulations on at least attempting some risk mitigation!
On the other hand.
After scrolling through a bajillion pages of the current fad for greige 10 mohairs held together plain sweaters, I have finally found a designer worth buying patterns from! If only they had this scale pattern on a sweater!
Ok. This is pretty neat. Makes me wish I knew how to knit.
Tragically, all the good tentacles are crocheted, not knit.
BTW, if anyone knows other Ravelry designers who give off similar vibes to Lavish Craft, I want their names! Or just your favorite designers in general as long as they aren’t PetiteKnit.
I’ve seen a lot of designs that are incidentally named after things from fantasy books, but the actual look of the piece wouldn’t tell you what it’s inspired by. I’m more interested in designers doing dragon scale designs or at least sweaters I can picture on a hobbit.
Fabel Knitwear has some pretty stuff, but I hear her gauge is weird af and her patterns are confusing. I have the Montmartre but haven’t made a serious attempt at it yet, so we’ll see what I think. I’m not finding the instructions bad, but I agree with all the nitpickers that her own knitting is that trendy airy bullshit where the needles are 5 sizes too big and you’re making up for it with hairy yarns. My sense is that she’s one of those designers whose shots of herself in samples are by far the best thing about the designs.
I’ve spotted a couple of things I want from Skeindeer Knits. Lots of classic looks there that I can’t easily get from a store.
Norah Gaughan‘s more whimsical designs, like this one and this one, might be up your alley. (She has a lot of really basic stuff too, including at least a couple in the vein of the trend you mentioned, but she’s also a bloody wizard with cables and other interesting design elements.)
Oh man! I had not realized those were by the same person! I’ve run across both separate times and found them intriguing.
You may like Dragon Lore? Or any of Alexandra Davidoff’s other dragon projects?
Her other knits are a range of “normal” to “fantasy-esque”, but I think they’re neat. :)
Heavener Scarf
Azul
Niiiice
Some of Nim Teasdale’s designs give off similar vibes!
She also has a lot of lacework in some of her shawl designs but all are very pretty.
I’ve made her Goldleaf and Corozona patterns and I’ve found them easy to follow.
May I introduce you to my knitting crush Tania Richter?
Her designs aren’t things a fantasy character would wear, necessarily, but *I* sure want to wear them as a lover of fantasy. (I haven’t sprung for any yet so I can’t speak to the pattern drafting functionality, but she seems to be popular which is a good sign.)
Ooh, I don’t think I’ve seen these yet.
I’m very excited about the recs you’re all giving me, especially the ones I’ve never seen.
When searching on ravelry, you can put a minus before a search term like so: -mohair. This will remove any patterns that identify as using mohair. This might make avoiding those kinds of patterns easier.
Here are some cool fantasy-ish pieces I’ve seen:
Olivia’s Cape by Amy Gunderson
The Seer by Ninja Chickens
Silversmith Hoodie by Meiju K-P
Dragon Scale Mitts by Colette Smith
Sekiryu Kimono Sweater by Tania Richter
Long Cardigan by Little Bunnyxx
Firebird by Inna M (a colorwork chart)
Tahesha the dragon (ess) by Ina Wendrock (cable chart)
Interesting. I didn’t realize Ravelry search respected - notation like that.
Ooh, I’ve spotted Olivia’s Cape before, and I do indeed love it. Nice list here!
do you like lace? Because I just discovered Sharon Winsauer
Imperial Dance of the Dragon & Phoenix
Running Free
The Zodiac
@emi–rose
Kulabra Designs is also great for interesting, intricate colorwork!! Obviously, your choice of yarn really matters, but Natalia Moreva does incredible colorwork. The best part? Very rarely do you ever have to break your yarn. You might think you’re gonna have to weave in a million ends, but you don’t.

(above) Dripping Ripples (Ravelry link/Website link)
(above) Taboo (Ravelry link/Website link)
(above) Squirpool (Ravelry link/Website link)
(above) Pavlin (Ravelry link/Website link)
She also has a ton of extremely detailed colorwork socks, mittens, hats, and sweaters, but these shawls/scarves allow for such big, striking motifs, I had to show them.
If you’re still doing redraws how about some classic Shadowpeach. (I’m still mad at knock off male Medusa)
oooo classics indeed 👌
lore wise mac is supposed to only have one set of ears in these, but he already looks so bald without his scar and beard i couldn't bring myself to also take his ears away 😔

When I was about thirteen, I remember dreaming a film trailer. When I woke up, I wrote it down and most of it is generic fantasy oppression fight the system by collecting mcguffins stuff -
But a major stylisation of it was that flat, shiny, Tim Burton/Disney CGI. The world was dripping in this. Everything was that oversaturated, over-polished, over-worked CGI.
But every time they collected/destroyed another Mcguffin, that CGI went away. But by bit it transitioned into real sets and practical effects until there is no noticeable CGI at all. Because that’s the system they were fighting - they weren’t being allowed to see what the real world looked like.
Decay and rot and broken infrastructure were being essentially photoshopped over because our villainous leader had no interest or ability to maintain things. It was only ever a temporary solution thought up by someone who thought that transforming a pack of wolves into humans to be her elite guard force was, in fact, a good idea.
(It was not. There was a whole subplot about the secondary antagonists in-fighting and being driven insane by the disconnect between how humans and wolves think and act where the one which were cubs when transformed were desperate to return to something they’d never experience and the patriarch/matriarch of the family knew they were too changed to ever survive as wolves again - definitely stolen from Terry Pratchett)
But, yeah, I’d be tempted to see if that would work, but with a story not dreamed up by a thirteen year old with an obsession with 1970s actors.
I've been thinking about this again and, wow, if only I had a plot or characters to go with it that isn't generic YA collect McGuffins.
A 75 yo man proudly came into the cafe wearing an Ultra Maga hat. I excused my barista from the register to handle the transaction.
"The hat is customizable," he said, struggling with the velcro patch on the front. "If I need it, I have an ICE one too. I pick based off the business i walk into."
"Customizable is an important hat descriptor," I said. "what can I get you?"
"You wouldn't believe how offended people get these days," he said. "And I'm supposed to do something about it if you're offended? You chose to be offended!"
"We all have hundreds of thousands of decisions everyday," I said. I thickened my accent. "That's what my stepdad always said. But I can make one easier - we have a delicious Ethiopian roast available."
"Like if I told you you have a bull ring," he said, "because bulls have rings in their noses. Is that offensive?"
I laughed. "I've heard that before."
"It's a joke, but people get offended. Maybe you're offended."
I looked at him. I smiled. "You aren't trying to offend me though, right?"
Of course he was. I was being friendly and the friendlier I was, the faster he switched topics. He was saying anything inflammatory he could think of to see if I'd take the bait. After about 20 minutes of my redirecting and deescalating, he settled into a more normal interaction. He took up too much of my time showing me a product I'd feigned mild interest in to get him to stop talking about getting accused of inappropriate behavior at work. When we finally disengaged, he spent 10 minutes trying to catch my eye again. When he failed, he left.
There's this new breed of customer who insists on trying to incite political conversation through their clothing and, when that doesnt work, their snide little comments. If I owned my own business, maybe I would have given the guy the fight he wanted. But I work for a corporation and I love paying my bills so I deescalated.
Anyone wearing that type of shit and preying on workers for their own spank bank material is a brainless fucking sheep.

it feels so evil that you can't still access your university online library after you graduate *remembers my principles* it feels so evil that everyone can't access to that stuff all the time
That is very true.

it WHAT
if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isn’t
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely don’t and didn’t when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you don’t
homeless people actually can’t be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right
This post is the distilled essence of everything I believe in.
