I did attempt to look at the FFN data at least and didn't find a significant difference between the earlier and later halves of my sample. Because the URLs increment in order, it's possible to look at dates to some degree. I don't remember if I tried that with the Wattpad sample or not, though it's so strongly het that IDK if it would make a difference.
I was expecting FFN to have more deletions of m/m in the older stuff, so I was interested that the rates of extant m/m didn't seem to be changing that much.

Way too many artists and writers think that making their characters look and sound interesting is more important than actually doing something with them.
"Here's a really interesting design, but I'll give some of the most boring presentation of it in my art." Yeah I get you're trying to convey their dynamic or something, but you know what? Beyond that it's not interesting. It's interesting as an artwork. But it sows no interest in terms of wanting to know their story.
Same with authors, who'll drop these "character filled" blurbs, trying to stand out amongst the crowd, but again, it's fine as a two sentence blurb, but fucking lord does no one ever seem to actually know how to deliver personality.
I think that's what I find to be lacking a lot: There's a lot of "character." There's a lot of "scaffolding," and presentation. But there's almost no personality. It's too polished? Clean? It feels exactly like what it is: A presentation. But it doesn't invoke any interest to go deeper.
I think it lacks personality. As if the authors and artists don't know how to make characters more than just characters.
And personally, I'm a boring bitch maybe. But I'd take the same warmed up bullshit rinse and repeat a thousand times, as long as the personality of the characters manages to tear into me and hook me. In the last few years, any time I found a story I loved, it wasn't the super high quality and advanced art, or the super innovative and highest grade of literary skills that hooked me, in the end it was always someone putting all their energy into personality and really making me get excited.
Yeah the story was predictable. But I wanted to see how these personalities would act within the story I could predict along the way.
The art wasn't the most anatomically perfect, and maybe a bit jank. But fucking hell did the art at least carry the personality and know how to combine them.
I feel like that's often missing and makes me move past "interesting" blurbs and art works. No personality.

I'd be less annoyed at all the fic-to-publishing that's been happening if they'd actually do a better job of making it less obvious. it's not like it hasn't been done!

So I decided to start filtering out "*/Reader" on AO3. It works really well for filtering out reader-inserts without needing to filter out a bajillion "Character/Reader" tags. Excellent, excellent.
But this now has me wondering. If I'm looking for ship fic involving a specific character, but I'm not particularly picky about the ship at the moment, could I search for "*/Character" and get all the ship fics involving that character?

Today I learned via Reddit post that there's a formal AO3 tag for "PWP without Porn." I didn't do a full survey of the tag but from what I could tell basically all of it had porn actually.

How in some way the stupid otome game discourse shows that otome players are somehow more homophobic than bishoujo game players? Like "errm, if somehow a guy is bisexual in my otome, they are adding BL element that is false marketing and putting men into my women only space, and if a man I like is bi, it means he has evil gay thoughts to commit adultery" about a guy who is not even fucking gay.
While bishoujo harem shit have yuri fanservice like it is normal and bisexual girls without 0 complain that the guy getting cucked about it. How the fuck do you manage to make yourself more homophobic than guy who is into harem anime.

Tagging question that will hopefully take around as much time to get posted as I take to finish the fic:
Tiny RPF fandom, ship A/B. A is a man who uses he/him. B uses she/her in real life, but has complicated ideas about their gender, which causes some of the fandom to refer to them with they/them. In my fic, the third-person narration refers to them with they/them while the other characters refer to them with she/her (because we as a fandom may like to call them they/them, but realistically no one else ever would).
Should I tag M/F, Other, or both? Do I need to tag Nonbinary!B or similar despite the fact I haven't changed anything about B's gender besides their pronouns? I'm leaning towards just tagging "B Uses They/Them" or whatever the accepted syntax is for that, but that's not exactly accurate either because they don't use those pronouns in the universe of the fic. Maybe the right answer is to just suck it up and use the same pronouns the whole time, but doing that in either direction feels wrong....

i find myself more and more ticked off each day at people tagging their ot3(or more) fic with each combination of possible pairings as well. if someone is looking for a/b, they most likely don't care about a/b/c, that's a different tag. come on :annoyed_cat_noises:

Reading fanfictions have actually help me a lot with getting over my fear over being flirted at by men, I'm realizing now. I used to get really disgusted by harmless or jokey pick-up lines from men when using dating apps; but now I'm actually having a lot of fun trading flirts with others because instead of the Traumatic Situation it used to remind me of, now I think of cheesy, romantic scenes I read in fics and had a more positive view on them. It's really great, I'm really glad.

ugh it is so very hard to be in fandom with a BNF that is in every conversation and in every rec list and their fics are fine not great or anything just what you'd expect from popular fic writer. mid. but yet their presence constantly everywhere is just so irritating. there are other fic writers in this fandom surely.

My nephew talking about how Spin/Miles Morales used to be his favorite out of Spidey and friends, but now it's Spidey/Peter Parker because he "doesn't like Spin's hair" anymore. And oh buddy. I'm not sure how to have that conversation with him, but someone needs to try. Could it have nothing to do with race, sure, but it seems likely some kind of unconscious bias or peer influence. For today I just tried saying you can have multiple favorites, but I'll try again later. I just wish I were better equipped to tackle this kind of thing well.

The trend of "villainess" stories is...
am I being stupid or is it the same shit as the "good two shoes" reincarnation stories, just with the beginning having the "villainess" character be treated poorly?
Because it all follows the exact same story points, just that instead of the original evil character, now it's the "good" character being evil. But the entire story still hits the same twists and turns with very little difference between FMC being "the good" character from the start or the misunderstood villain. (Even the I'm gonna fix the evils of the original body, it's still very dry and cookie cutter.)
