been thinking about this lately after some discussions about historical marriage where people have chimed in about how extra awful it would have been for trans men forced into The Wife Role because of dysphoria. which like. yeah. but the thing about The Wife Role in the context of not having civil rights and being the property of a husband is that it is inherently dysphoria-inducing to anyone who identifies as a human being instead of an object.

like many people have said this better than me but no it IS odd that we've come to think of potatoes as so quintessentially european that their presence in historical fantasy where they're anachronistic doesn't jar. and yes people are trying to have the trappings of post-colonial europe without engaging w the icky colonialism part and yes people are neglecting to imagine what a european cuisine without potatoes would be like.

im fully in favour of 'let people have fun w their fantasy world' but is considering how the potatoes got there in the absence of colonialism not a fun exercise? maybe every year the dragon riders go on a great transatlantic potato pilgrimage

“there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” is a reminder to never believe your consumption is 100% ethical and to always distrust companies who claim to be 100% ethical. it’s not something you can just tack on to every choice you make to justify buying blood diamonds or what the fuck ever. just because nothing is ethical under capitalism doesn’t mean there isn’t MORE ethical consumption under capitalism. plus, half the people i see saying this have no problem with capitalism and are just using it to get out of having to consume responsibly.
