Worldbuilding where being queer is normalized and queerphobia has no impact on the plot? THAT'S FINE. Worldbuilding that includes queerphobia and tackles the effects of it as part of the story? THAT'S ALSO FINE.

Low-stakes queer romcom where the characters are fluffy and cute? THAT'S COOL. Messy queer drama with toxic people who fuck each other over and clash repeatedly? THAT'S ALSO COOL.

Stories that center the characters' queerness, show a trans character's transition, and are about the queerness as much as the rest of the plot? AWESOME. Stories where the characters' queerness isn't treated as a big deal, and have trans characters whose transition happened before the story entirely? ALSO AWESOME.

You may PREFER one thing or another, but it is actually good to have all these things. It's about variety. It's about queer characters being allowed to exist without censorship. It's about queer artists getting to make things without being told we're a "niche issue" or "adult content." It's about having as many goddamn cakes as the bakery can produce.

some great and super easy first steps people can do to combat this:

the first easy thing you can do? get into the habit of going through the settings on ALL of your devices, accounts, and applications. you don't even necessarily have to change anything right right now, just make it a routine to scroll through all the available settings whenever you get something new, or when updates happen. there are many ways you can combat ads and other data gathering just in your settings menus. apps, games, phones, tablets, computers, smart devices, TVs, etc. sit down and scroll through the settings (especially any privacy and advertisement settings, obvi), and maybe look up terms you aren't familiar with. takes about 10 minutes tops even for bigger menus. just doing this gives you a leg up. did you know you can turn off ads on many smart TVs? its in the settings menu its not even hidden or anything. pro tip: any ads that are "personalized" are gathering lots of data on you and probably selling it or trading it with unspecified "partner" companies.

wherever you can, stop using chrome (and chromium based browsers, but chrome is the major one) and use firefox instead. this may not be possible for things like work devices, but do it on all your personal stuff For Sure. i know the switch can feel intimidating, but now more than ever the user experience for firefox is near identical to chrome. it just functions better and has more user freedom, so you can Actually Functionally turn off and on some very privacy-enhancing settings without breaking anything. chrome is getting rid of adblockers btw, so just love yourself and switch (really easy bookmark and password migration btw. like. click of a button.)

and of course the one we all saw coming: install uBlock Origin everywhere you can (desktop and mobile browsers). NOT any other adblocker just uBlock Origin. ...Yeah thats pretty much it, works out of the box.
