three completely unrelated characters iâve decided to draw in one place for some inconceivable reason
Fav end
fixing up ur bfâs booboos <3<3<3
Out-lawyering an Inevitable
(This happened during downtime as sort of an interview-slash-session-zero for a new player to replace a player whoâd dropped out.  The new character is an elf cleric whose backstory has him running an apothecary on the side, specializing in reviving the dead.  There were dice rolls involved, but I was not privy to any of them since this was all done on Discord.  The whole party was listening, but the rest of us had our mics muted.  All kibitzing was done in the OOC text channel, but Iâm omitting that here since neither participant was reading it at the time.)
DM: Â You see what appears to be a construct approaching. Â *Dice roll.* Â Iâm just going to go ahead and give you that itâs an Inevitable.
Cleric: Â Marut, Iâm guessing?
(Note:  Inevitables are construct outsiders who are built to enforce universal laws; Maruts specialize in dealing with people who cheat death.)
DM: Â Very good. Â Do you try to run or attack?
Cleric: Â Nah, Iâm good. Â I wait for it to approach.
DM: Â *Raises a brow.* Â Alright, then. Â *Clears his throat and does a creditable Michael Dorn impression for the Marutâs voice.* Â âYou are Taviel Andaris.â Â Statement, not question, by the way.
Cleric:  âI am.  What brings⊠I would ask what brings you to my apothecary, but I think I already know.â
DM:  âIf you expect the charges against you, then you already know of your crime.  You stand accused of denying death its due.  To date you have resurrected four hundred and seventeen peopleâŠâ
Cleric: Â âUm, four hundred twenty-two. Â It was a busy week last week.â
DM:  *Without missing a beat.* ââŠFour hundred and twenty-two people.  My programming is to stop this from happening again.  Your optionsâŠâ
Cleric: Â âDefying death? Â Um. Â Not guilty, actually.â Â Not rolling a bluff check, Iâm not bluffing.
DM: Â Fine by me, Iâm still rolling sense motive. Â *Dice roll.* Â The Marut looks profoundly dubious. Â âYou not only confessed to your crime, you corrected my outdated count. Â You have already admitted guilt.â
Cleric: Â âI did no such thing. Â Yes, I specialize in resurrections; no, I am not guilty of keeping anyone from the grave.â
DM:  âŠI think I see where youâre going with this, but the Marut wonât.  âYour arguments are irrreconcilable.  My programming is to stop this from happening again.  Your options are to accept a geas or to be destroyed.â
Cleric: Â âIf you wish to place a geas on me to prevent me from, as you phrased it, denying death its due, then you are welcome to do so. Â It will not affect my business or business practices.â
DM: Â The Marut looks sort of bemused. Â âYou do understand what a geas is, correct?â
Cleric: Â âI can cast them, myself â and break them. Â I would not need to break yours to continue my business.â
DM: Â *Dice roll, snort.* Â Itâs not happy with that answer.
Cleric: Â *Laughs!* I can make it a lot unhappier, but Iâm not set up for this kind of a one-on-one fight. Â âLet me explain myself. Â How much do you know about my business besides the resurrection count?â
DM: Â *Dice roll.* Â It scowls at you. Â âI will allow this, but be brief.â
Cleric: Â âLet me rephrase that question, actually: Â How many people have I granted immortality?â
DM: Â *Snickers.* I stand corrected, thatâs not where I thought you were going with this. Â It doesnât like that answer, but it doesnât move. Â âYou have granted no one immortality.â
Cleric: Â âAnd how many people have I brought back to life who were not killed by old age or disease?â
DM: Â *Dice roll.* Â It gives you a triumphant look at that. Â âThree.â
Cleric: Â Shit. Â Um. Â âThose were deliberately administered diseases with the intent of killing the victims, two from traps and one that was later successfully tried as a murder case. Â They can not be considered natural deaths.â
DM: Â Nice save! Â *Dice roll.* Â Iâll allow that.
Cleric: Â Yes!
DM: Â âDiscounting that, you have resurrected no one who has died of natural causes.â
Cleric:  âThen how have I cheated death?  Itâs natural and even more inevitable than you are.  Iâve only postponed it so thatâŠâ  What was that number again, anyway, four-twenty-two?
DM: Â Uh, I think so, yeah; close enough.
Cleric:  ââŠSo that four hundred twenty-two people could have a chance to finish lives that would otherwise have been cut short.  I firmly maintain my not-guilty plea.â  And I put my hands on my hips and glare up at it.
DM: Â It glares right back at you. Â âYour arguments are based on a technicality.â
Cleric:  *Defiantly.* âNo.  Your charges are based on a technicality.  My clients will all die.  Eventually.  I cannot change that.â
DM:  *Dice roll.*  âŠHm.  *Dice roll.  Snicker.*  Well, then.
Cleric: Â What?
DM:  âYour answers have satisfied my programming.  You are free to go.  But be aware:  You actions will be monitored intently.â  *Laughs.* I hate you.  That was supposed to be the start of a fight that I was going to get the rest of the party in on for our next session.  You just broke how I was supposed to introduce you all.  âŠWho the hell even tries to out-lawyer a god-damned Inevitable in their own area of expertise, anywayâŠ?

Re: Purge.
If everything was legal for like twenty-four hours Iâd start a communal garden.
This is barely even hyperbole.
I would legit start a communal garden with whoever wanted to join me.
I think that would be fucking dope.
Rewrite of The Purge where, for 24 hours, people hurriedly complete all those renovations and projects that the council forbids. Helen, leader of the PTA, laughs maniacally as she tears grass from her lawn with a pitchfork, her thirteen-year-old daughter Emilyâs arms red with mud as she wades through the carnage, planting thyme. Jack and Mitch have left their friendly smiles behind at the RSL; today their faces show only grim determination as they methodically shovel gravel into potholes and pour bitumen. The local biker gang, gathered on the corner, are the most rambunctious of the mischief-makers, whooping and hollering as nail guns are driven into plywood, assembling miniature by-the-road shelters for the homeless to rest on cold nights. Their noise covers the sounds of Katy and Sam moving from street to street with their trolleys, picking up unsold or unwanted food from houses and restaurants to give to the hungry without fear of taxation or food safety reprisals. Theyâre young, and still scared of being caught.
But thereâs no one to catch them. Not tonight.Â
âŠYou know you live in a dystopian capitalist hellscape whenâŠ.
Jasper is making the weirdest fucking noise. He sounds like an angry garbage disposal.
(Rebecca Sugar herself said all Gems use female pronouns, just a note, a fun fact)
Jasper is my cat

for chinese new year they get all these famous actors and comedians together and they do a lil show and one of the comedians was like âi was in a hotel in america once and there was a mouse in my room so i called reception except i forgot the english word for mouse so instead i said âyou know tom and jerry? jerry is hereâ
jerry is here
my chinese teacher once shared this story in class about someone who went to the grocery to buy chicken, but they forgot the english word for it, so they grabbed an egg, went to the nearest sales lady and said âwhereâs the motherâ
When I was a teenager, we went to Italy for the summer holidays. We are German, neither of us speaks more than a few words of Italian. That didnât keep my family from always referring to me when they wanted something translated because âYouâre so good with languages and you took Latinâ. (I told them a hundred times I couldnât order ice cream in Latin, they ignored that.) Anyway, my dad really loved a certain cheese there, made from sheepâs milk. He knew the Italian word for âcheeseâ â formaggio â and he knew how to say âpleaseâ. And he had already spotted a little shop that sold the cheese. He asked me what âsheepâ was in Italian, and of course, I had no idea. So he just shrugged and said âIâll manageâ and went into the shop. 5 mins later, he comes out with a little bag, obviously very pleased with himself. How did he manage it? He had gone in and said â'Baaaahâ formaggio, prego.â
I was done for the day.
This makes me feel better about every conversation I had in both Rome and Ghent.
I once lost my husband in the ruins of a French castle on a mountain, and trotted around looking for him in increasing desperation. âHave you seen my husband?â I asked some French people, having forgotten all descriptive words. âHe is small, and English. His hair is the color of bread.â
I did not find my husband in this way.
In rural France it is apparently Known that one brings oneâs own shopping bags to the grocery store. I was a visitor and had not been briefed and had no shopping bag. I saw that other people were able to conduct negotiations to purchase shopping bags, but I could not remember the word for âbag.â
âCan I have a box that is not a box,â I said.
The checkout lady looked extremely tired and said, âUn sac?â (A sack?)
Of course. A fucking sack. And so I did get a sack.
I once was at a German-American Church youth camp for two weeks and predictably, we spoke a whole lot of English.Â
When I phoned my mom during week two I tried to tell her that it was a bit cold in the sleeping bag at night. I stumbled around the word in German because for the love of god, I could remember the Germwn word for sleeping bag.
âYeah so, itâs like a bag you sleep in at night?â
âAnd my mother must probably have thought I lost my mind. She just sighed and was like âSo, a Schlafsack, yes?â
Which is LITERALLY Sleeping sac ⊠The German word is a basically a one on one translation of the English word and I just⊠I failed it. At my mother tongue. BIG
My former boss is Italian and she ended up working in a lab where the common language was English. She once saw an insect running through the lab and she went to tell her colleagues. She remembered it was the name of a famous English band so she barged in the office yelling there was a rolling stone in the labâŠ
Iâm Spanish and have been living in the UK for a while now. I recently changed jobs and moved to a new office which is lost somewhere in the Midlandsâ countryside. Itâs a pretty quaint location, surrounded by forest on pretty much all sides, and with nice grounds⊠full of pheasants. I was pretty shocked when I drove in and saw a fucking pheasant strolling across the road. Calm as you please.
That afternoon I met up with some friends and was talking about the new job, and the new office, and for the life of me I couldnât remember the English word for pheasants. So I basically ended up bragging to my friends about âthe very fancy chickensâ we had outside the office.
Best thing is, everyone understood what I meant.
I love those stories so muchâŠ
Picture a Jewish American girl whose grasp of the Hebrew language comes from 10+ years of immersion in Biblical and liturgical Hebrew, not the modern language. Some words are identical, while others have significantly evolved.
She gets to Israel and is riding a bus for the very first time.
American:Â ŚŚŚ ŚŚŚŚ ŚŚ? (âHow much money?â but in rather archaic language)
Bus Driver:Â Ś©ŚȘŚ ŚŚŚŚŚ. (âTwo zuzimâ â a currency thatâs been out of circulation for millenia)
thatâs hilarious
I am officially screamlaughing at my desk from that last one OH MYÂ
Does everyone know the prime minister who promised to fuck the country?
So in Biblical Hebrew the word for penis and weapon are the same. There is a verb meaning to arm, which modern Hebrew semanticly drifted into âfuckâ: i.e. give someone your dick.
The minister was making a speech while a candidate, bemoning the state of the world. âThe Soviet Union is fucking Egypt. Germany is fucking Syria. The Americans are fucking everyone. But who is fucking us? When I am prime minister, I will ensure we are fucked!â
What the hell Biblical Hebrew.
Just guessing: The path from something like âgive someone a bladeâ to âgive someone a blade, if you know what I mean ;)â is probably not that difficult or unlikely.
^Given that the Latin word for sheath (like, for a sword) is literally âvaginaâ, I can verify that this metaphor is a time-honored one.Â
Oh yeah and one time my Latin professor was at this conference in Greece and his flight was canceled, so he needed to extend his hotel stay by one more night.
Except he doesnât speak a lick of modern Greek, and the receptionist couldnât speak English. Â Or French. Â Or German. Â Or Italian. Â (He tried all of them.)
Finally, in a fit of inspiration, he went upstairs and got his copy of Medea in the original Greek (you know, the stuff separated from modern Greek by two and a half thousand years). Â He found the passage where Medea begs Jason to let her stay for one more day, went downstairs, and read it to the receptionist.
She laughed her head off, but she gave him the extra night. Â
Reblogged just for Medea

Me and this roadhog were having a moment to ourselves . The ending gave me DRAMA. Made my last bullet count
an unstoppable force vs an immovable object
Ways you can tell someone is from a âstrictâ household on reddit. All of these are signs of abuse.
All of this.
For me, the revelation was this comic by Matt Groening from the Childhood is Hell collection
It was the part about âNever Tell Anyone What Goes On In This Familyâ that hit me. I got that EXACT LINE VERBATIM from my parents on several occasions. Back when I was little, I guess I considered it as âI suppose they just value privacy or somethingâ but only in my later years did I realize how much it could be manipulated for ill intent.Â
