I started listening to epic the musical a few days ago and Iâve finally gotten to Mutiny and Thunder Bringer and I never felt such emotions from that Iâm feeling rn compared to the other songs. The closest would be the underworld. Iâm about to convince Eurylochus myself to not kill Zeusâ cowsđđđ
Nah Underworld is the only song from Epic that chokes me up every time. Also fuck Eurylochus, that bitch was the reason their journey to Ithaca got so derailed when he opened the wind bag and then he had the balls to get mad at Ody for sacrificing 6 men like he didn't try and leave everyone to their fates with Circe
Actually, my good random friend! If we think about it REAL hard... the whole reason they had a such a long hard journey was because of Odysseus! He decided to pussy out, not kill the cyclops, AND expose his name and where he resides. From that, it led to Poseidon causing a storm that made it hard for Odysseus to get home. Which! Is the ENTIRE reason why they had to go to Aeolus, get the windbag, and so on. So all of the events that happened all stems from Odysseus and him being stupid.
Thank you!
I wouldn't say Ody was being stupid. Was it a stupid choice to give Polyphemus his name? Yes. However Ody didn't do it out of stupidity, he did it out of grief out of anger when Athena poked at his emotional wounds, he was fully committed to running away until that conversation with Athena that turned his grief into reckless rage.
Also sure if you see it that way Eurylochus wasn't responsible for derailing their journey sure however he was indirectly responsible for Anticlea's death as she SAW Ody's fleet close to Ithaca and then the windbag was opened and she believed he died in the Storm so she committed suicide by drowning herself.
Odysseus, first of all shouldve just killed the cyclops. And Eurylochus is not responsible for Anticlea's death, what??? In some retellings she died by drowning herself, but in the Odyssey, his mother died of grief and longing for her son during his long absence after the Trojan War.
And let's be honest, anyone in the crew was able to open the windbag. In the musical, literally Perimedes AND Elpenor are both the ones who say, "Captain what's happening, what's trapped in the bag?" Open the bag." "Let's see what you got!" And "we'll try." The two were just as able to open the bag as Eurylochus. And since the winions tricked them into thinking it was treasure, they were more eager to see what was actually in the bag.
Again, Odysseus is at fault for most of what happened. He isn't a good captain at all.
I could have sworn it was confirmed that in the EPIC retelling Anticlea dies because she sees the storm from the windbag and believes Odysseus died. Though if I'm misinformed then I apologise.
Also their objective was always just to get the sheep, why would Ody kill the cyclops that had already been blinded and didn't know anything about them when they were free to run away? Like Ody knew there were other cyclops there by that point, why would he risk alerting them just to kill one cyclops that was no longer a danger?? Like literally that could go so badly, say they do kill Polyphemus they would lose a few men there and alert the rest of the cyclops in that cave from the sound of Polyphemus' death cry, what would they do then? Book it hoping they can make it away from the island before the other cyclops find them?
And before you start about the cyclops proving to be a danger let me reiterate:
Ody originally was just running away with the sheep, he was never going to tell Polyphemus anything until he changed his mind after talking to Athena out of sheer grief fueled rage.
Also why does it matter that the others could have opened the bag??? It's not like we didn't know Eurylochus opened the bag, he clearly takes the blame for it through his own admission in Scylla. Also they could literally see Ithaca in view when they opened the bag, why wouldn't they wait until they made it home and then open the bag even if they believed it was treasure?
Now don't get me wrong, if you like Eurylochus that's great but to me he's not a character I feel bad for, that's just my opinion tho. The same way that in my opinion Ody doesn't deserve all the blame he gets for his decisions, like telling Polyphemus his name; he wouldn't have done that if it weren't for Athena popping in telling him to go back and kill Polyphemus.
All I'm saying is that these are my opinions I wish to elaborate on and not me trying to start an argument, tho I understand if it comes off that way, my way of writing through text has been called aggressive.
Any have a great day,
Peace and love!
(Also I don't know the correct plural for cyclops so I'm using it like with sheep)
