hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause

The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and theyāre frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
Iām sorry but thatās thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it⦠whoās the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a momentās notice?
It aināt Kermit
"Who stabbed you in the eye, Polyphemus?" "Moi! Moi stabbed me!" "He stabbed himself. Sad."
people who write fics. how do you feel about comments on super old ones you wrote like 2+ years ago
Bringing this out of the tags:
A fic written 2 years ago is NOT OLD. Two years is nothing. Two years ago was yesterday.
Also I don't care if a fic is 10 years old. Leave those comments!! Even if you think the author isn't active, or moved on from the fandom, I promise you it will make them smile.
I commented on a fic that was 11 years old, and there was already a response by the time I got up the next morning. Comment on the fics, please, comment on them, I promise it'll make the author's day either way
I got a comment on a fic of mine this week that just read "TWO THOUSAND AND NINE?"
I replied to it within seconds, of course. someone commented on my fic
As @pentapoda put it in this post:
(transcript: Every time someone comments on my old fic, i feel like I'm an old actor getting paid residuals. Appreciate you, old-fic-commenters. Key source of emotional income, tbh.)

ohhh my god I just fact-checked, Nolan actually DID cut the "Nobody" scene from his Odyssey movie. Mfer that is like cutting the Father reveal from Star Wars. Let me speak in a language you understand this is like not dressing Batman up in his suit. "It was not possible to work it in" the TikTok musical with a budget of $4 and a scratched Hamilton CD managed to work it in in SONG form, step up your FUCKING GAME

As someone who has written academic papers about the role of disguise and deceit in the Odyssey ā Nobody is so damn important.
Prior to this point, when Odysseus tries to exercise Xenia (ancient Greek guest rites/hospitality code), he did what he was supposed to do. (Well, we think so anyway ā notably, the most famous books of the Odyssey are told by Odysseus, who isnāt exactly a reliable narrator.)
But when Polyphemus kills and eats some of the men, the game changes. The Cyclops makes it clear he has no intention of abiding by Zeusās laws, and will cannibalize the lot of the men. So, Odysseus responds in kind ā he breaks Xenia and lies. He introduces himself under a false name as part of a trick. Polyphemus then breaks Xenia again ā he tells Nobody heāll be eaten last, and that is the Cyclopsā guest gift to him.
Odysseusā transgression is clearly the lesser one. The Nobody trick works. It gets Odysseus and most of his crew out of the cave alive.
But, crucially, before leaving Odysseus sheds his disguise. He admits his true identity, in detail, so he can boast of his achievements and add vanquishing a Cyclops to the list. And it bites him in the ass spectacularly.
The only reason why Polyphemus can curse Odysseus, can bid his father Poseidon to curse the man who blinded him, is because he now knows who did it. If Odysseus had kept his mouth shut, he might have safely made it home from there. But while a big part of why the Nobody disguise vs. real name reveal is showing Odysseusās hubris, itās not just about that. Itās also about the start of a pattern that hurts him more than it helps him.
From this point in the Odyssey on, Odysseus lies about his identity constantly. And sometimes it protects him, but more often itās a detriment or at least unnecessary. Heās lying about his identity primarily to people who are on his side ā a kindly loyal swineherd, his son, his faithful wife, his ailing father.
The last one is especially damning, because happens when Odysseus has already killed the suitors and returned home and reunited with the rest of his family sans disguises. He knows from everyone else that Laertes never betrayed him or his legacy, but was mourning his son and heartbroken for almost a decade. Odysseus has publicly declared his return to everyone else ā his father doesnāt know because heās living in squalor remotely. But Odysseus doesnāt tell his father who he is. He makes up a fake identity and tells a story implying Laertesā son is dead. And when Laertes bursts out crying, then Odysseus drops the charade and finally admits who he really was.
There was no utility to that lie. No loyalty to test. No hidden threats to worry about. But Odysseus still instinctively lies to his beloved father about who he is, only dropping the charade when he sees the damage itās doing to his relationships.
Because at this point, lying is pathological for Odysseus. He canāt seem to stop doing it. Because with Polyphemus, a lie protected him and the truth hurt him. That is the point of the ā Nobodyā disguise.
And they fucking cut it???

A fantasy story starting with the protagonist minding her own business gathering firewood, when a demon appears out of nowhere announcing that she belongs to him now. The protagonist demands to know on what grounds, she's never signed no damn contract. The demon is kind of baffled by this, and awkwardly explains that just now her father had promised his firstborn for something, and she is his firstborn.
The protagonist digs her heels in and says no, she never knew her biological father and by the way the demon explained the situation, evidently her father also doesn't know that he already has a daughter, so therefore the man who had made no contribution to her life after he bred and fled has no claim to her as something he could barter.
Not giving a shit about the fact she's gambling her life in doing so, the protagonist makes contact with the local woodland fae, asking them to negotiate on her side. The fae think that this is fucking hilarious and go with her. So, having lawyered up and with a reluctant demon in tow, the protagonist heads off on a quest to find her father and do whatever it takes to wrangle everyone involved into unmaking the contract.
Convene the Beit din, we have a matter to settle.
I imagine if the fae existed, Jews and especially rabbis would have a lot easier time dealing with them than gentiles.
If you need an exorcism you find a catholic priest. If you need to get fae contract divorced, you find a rabbi.
I am not Jewish, but I would buy every book of a series featuring a rabbi who has a side job dealing with the Fae.
The Exorcist and the Rabbi are partners... When the problem is talkative the Rabbi takes the lead, when the problem is violent the Exorcist is in their element.
Great news, everyone
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
A Jewish peasant girl turned moneylender, Miriam, ends up stuck married to the fae king of winter. The daughter of a duke gets stuck married to the emperor, who is possessed by a demon.
The plot is the two of them trying to survive, get divorced through any means necessary, and save their respective people.
it would suck being a new immortal. like itād be 2109 and people would go,Ā āwhat was it like seeing ancient civilizations rise and fall like that? seeing the pyramids being built? watching the expansion and growth of the new world?ā and iād just be like,Ā ānoā¦no i was born in 1991. so like, wow iām gonna see some cool stuff, but, i mean iām not that much older than just a really, really old person, you know? phones were big back then. so big. but only for like ten years, then they got like, as good as they are now. uh. rhinos existed. donāt think i ever saw one in person. cool, good talk.ā
even worse, imagine being an immortal who keeps missing stuff.Ā āWhat was it like seeing the pyramids being built?ā āFuck if I know, I was in Madagascar.ā āOh, okay. Well, how was the Renaissance?ā āI fell down a hole in Scotland and people thought I was an enchanted well for four hundred years, it was over by the time I convinced someone to get me out.ā
And now, a lesson in biases:
We barely know anything about Madagascar pre-500CE. We donāt even know whether the island had a permanent population before then, despite finding a bunch of much older signs of temporary human presence.
Malagasy mythology makes mention of the vazimba, a āprecursorā ethnic group that might or might not be distinct from Madagascarās current population.
The point is, we do not know.
So you were in Madagascar when the pyramids were being built in Egypt, i.e. during one of the most obscure, most undocumented parts of Madagascarās human history?
Oh, buddy, you better go and make a bunch of anthropologists and archeologists really happy RIGHT NOW instead of feeling bad about missing everyone elseās pet Major Event.
Itās been a decade since we left that comment and you have the best reply anyoneās left to it.
of course you have blood all over you. and pronouns

Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

OH HELL THE FUCK YES
Been feeding baby goats that a mama rejected, and having Jonathan and Martha Kent thoughts.
Jon and Martha find the Kryptonian ship in their corn field, but when they open it the baby is not well. Heās traveled light years, and even at the fastest speeds, it was days or even weeks. What fluid was sustaining him has been gone for some time.
They work a farm. They know what a sick baby looks like.
They take the baby inside anyway. Itās far too late for anything to be open, so they break out the milk replacer for the livestock. The bottle they find has had a goat kid sucking on it, but they wash it good, because what other choice do they have?
The baby doesnāt take to the bottle well. He barely eats.
They both know a lack of appetite is a death knell.
āI canāt watch a baby die,ā Martha says. Sheās done it before. She and Jon struggled to have kids. The closest they got ā well. Itās a hard memory for them both.
āI know, love.ā Jonās a good old country boy. He grew up being told itās a manās job to take the burden. Heāll take it now. āGo to bed. Iāll stay with him.ā
Sure, they both know Martha wonāt sleep, but at least she wonāt have to see.
Jon takes the wee babe out onto the porch. He tries to poke more milk down him. Rubs his chest, bounces him, pushes the bottle past his lips, every damn thing he can do. The hours are long and hard, but he would never forgive himself if he didnāt try.
The baby continues to fade.
The eastern sky starts to lighten.
āIām sorry, little fellow,ā Jonathan whispers. Itās not long now. He can feel it in his bones. Heās held plenty of animals as they died. Heās waiting for that long last exhale. āSorry you came all this way and this is your welcome. Canāt even enjoy the sunrise.ā
He told himself he wouldnāt cry until the boy was gone. Wasnāt fair, that his last moments would be a man crying instead of comforting him, but Jon does his best to do both at the same time. He cradles the poor little thing even as his shoulders shake.
The sun breaks over the horizon, and light floods the porch. Jon closes his eyes against it and his tears.
Itās a hiccup that is the first sign something changed. Then the wiggling.
Jon nearly drops the baby in shock.
When he looks down, the little boy sure hasnāt died. Heās got this rosy little glow to his cheeks and his eyes are bright. Heās throwing those little hands around like heās trying to figure out how they work, but he seems to be trying to reach for the sun.
Jon just stares at him until the baby gets frustrated enough with his clumsy limbs that he opens his mouth to tell the world about it.
The babyās cry is so powerful Jon falls right out of his rocker. Itās a miracle he doesnāt launch the poor thing.
Only thing he can think to do with a screaming baby thatās about to take his eardrums out is shove that bottle right in that open mouth.
The little boy shuts right up and clings to the bottle for dear life as he drinks with a fury.
When Martha comes stumbling out wild-eyed in her jammies, Jonās sitting on the porch with a grin as bright as the dawn despite the fact his ears are still ringing.
āTurns out he has a good set of lungs.ā
